[snip]

The pair had no sooner taken a good ten or so steps off where they had materialized, when a grey haired man in his late 60s came out at a leisurely but precise measured steps. From a stately ornate brown-golden colored lined pair of doors. He wore a finely pressed and cared for classical black and white butler outfit that would not have been out of place with such styles of high born serving servants back on Earth in ages past. Tucked under his left arm was a seemingly simple cane with a golden band about it. The only thing that gave it away as being anything but a simple servants cane to Ra’ti in particular, and even then it was only a brief flash before covered up by the man’s elbow, was a pair of tiny depressions near that golden band. They had the air of non-wooden texture and more like button depressions. Perhaps it was some kind of disguised weapon? It would make sense if this man also did duty as a body guard or security. Given even in his late 60s he looked strong and healthy for his age it would not be a surprise if this was currently or in the past the truth of the matter.

”..Greetings, Captain Asam, and to your escort. I am Lord Governor Stiles personal servant and head of ground security. I have been tasked with escorting you to the Lord in his personal offices.” He said, glancing down to where Ra’ti’s phaser was holstered, the butler seemed to take note of it and perhaps even other locations on their person where such could be considered with a well trained eye. “..Your personal effects remain upon your person. But I must warn you should have danger come from your quarter not only am I still quite able to defend my Lord but so are many others that I have personally trained. If there then is nothing else please follow me?” he said gesturing into the open door, where a stately woman in a black and white maid’s garb stood to the left waiting to close the door no doubt, and then with a broom in hand sweet up any dirt or such that had come in.

Ra’Ti grinned broadly at the once over and said “Appreciate that. I’m Lieutenant Ra’Ti. And your name, sir? Can’t very well just say ‘Hey you’ all the time, now can we? And if you are in charge of security, we will definitely be having a chat, I imagine.”

”..Indeed, Lieutenant Ra’Ti I believe you and I could have a lengthy conversation on such topics. I am his loyal man servant Charles Welsh..” He stated.

Rende chuckled at the man but there was a look that made it…concerning, and then she tossed Ra’Ti an amused look. The butler was quite locked on Ra’Ti’s equipment and extras but hadn’t even taken note of Rende’s. Some might say it was because Rende had centuries to learn how to move as if they were part of her and just had that experience, but she wasn’t so arrogant as to think so. Length of time didn’t account for intensity of experience. Xam moved the same way. “Young man,” she looked at the Butler and spoke as if to a child, “if I meant you or your governor harm I wouldn’t need a hand phaser to do so. Your warning and attention to your duty is noted. Our duty, which I am sure you can understand, is to oversee the evaluation, stability, and safety of your colony and sister colonies. A duty we take quite seriously, so your implication that we are here for anything but is insulting. And the lack of active ground security on your part given hostiles in your system, is ill advised to say the least.” Then she walked past him into the building giving the maid a smile, but not before politely wiping her shoes on the mat outside the door.

”..I assure you Captain the security within these grounds, the colony, and our own system is quite prepared for a possible Orion attack should it come. The best defenses are sometimes those you do not always see nor are obvious..” he stated simply in reply.

Rende looked far from convinced. If that was so they wouldn’t have found a camouflaged ship in their system nor would their ships be harried by pirates constantly. They were lucky the Orions only wanted goods and not something more nefarious. She’d been doing this for centuries, she was adept at picking up the ‘not obvious’. Noticing such things was often the difference between death and survival. And perhaps there were, but the behavior of their communications and officials left MUCH to be improved. They had very little regard to their own safety. Either they were incompetent or lazy. Rende didn’t abide either.

Xam’s eyes widened slightly in surprise and then he grinned. He looked at the man and said “Yeah… might wanna pump the brakes on the whole ‘I’m a badass, you better watch out.’ shtick. We’re here to help… sir. Not start a fight. This-” and he indicated the phaser on his hip with a incline of his head, “- is simply standard protocol for Away Teams.” He nodded once and then followed Rende inside, also stopping to wipe his feet and giving the maid one of his most charming smiles while he waited for the… whomever he was… to follow.

Charles gave a slight nod of his head saying nothing in reply, wiping his feet as well and entering the maid quickly swept off to area outside and inside, before shutting the door behind them as they entered. Before departing down another side passage to their left. The interior was clearly of a disguised metal but yet looked like ancient polished and high quality wood and stone built constructions appropriate for lavish high noble born royalty from the early-mid 1900s on Earth. Paintings of obvious old Earth and later current colony nobles of importance were on display here and there. Servants and well dressed standing guards the second of which armed with holstered side arms, and a few poised with similar rifles and functional blades in places were spread out in spots. There also was the feeling like Charles said of others watching from unseen spots here and there as they went down a corridor and emerged into a lush wide balcony overlooking what might be a large dance hall. Going down the curved steps the group was soon off them and Charles nodded to a servant man in similar black attire like his to open the door before them. “..Lord Governor Stiles is expecting you Captain. If you need any accompaniments or drinks to pass your meeting please let the maid on duty inside know..” He said letting the two take the laed going inside the plush office with rows of PADDs in place of physical books on shelves, and a plush tan and dark toned red couch and chairs. Regal gold looking statues and more paintings were also evident as a sign of wealth, as well as several exotic looking plants that gave the room a pleasant calming smell. Charles took a spot to the left on the inside of the door and remained quiet.

Rising from behind a oaken polished desk a man in his late 40s stood. “..Ah Captain Asam. I see you had no trouble finding your way here. I trust Charles and my staff have attended to your needs? If you require a drink or food while we talk I can arrange such..” he said indicating the maid waiting quietly off to their left.

Cpt Asam had dealt with people full of pomp and fluff far too many times. She’d helped to overthrow such lazy regimes and those who were cruel behind such ornate trappings. On first glance the governor didn’t have that underlying arrogance that marked him as cruel or uncaring, but first impressions were not everything. She strode into the room with authority and came to a stop before his desk. “Lord Governor Stiles. Yes he is quite versed in protocol.” She glanced at the maid with a gentle smile and then back. “No thank you. May I introduce my tactical officer Lt Xam Ra’Ti.” She gestured to Ra’ti standing beside her.

“I apologize for not arriving with my first officer Cmdr Alden, but there was concerning developments that needed my attention, and now yours. So, shall we get down to business?”
