As Charlie peered out of the narrow window on her shuttle she craned her neck to get her first glimpse at her new home. NE Driver at the helm smirked as he watched the eager officer trying to sneak a peak. “Don’t worry, we’ll be arriving soon, he chuckled as they began their final approach and the ship came into view for the first time.

Charlie took a deep breath and tried to calm her nerves. Although this was her third posting out of the academy, this was her first time as a department head and she wasn’t really sure what to expect, she just hoped she was up to the task.

As they approached the Sentinel, NE Driver opened the comm line.

=/\= Ensign Driver calling USS Sentinel requesting permission to dock with one Lt (jg) Bailey =/\=

Charlie got a little flutter of excitement hearing her new rank as she waited expectantly for the reply.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

=O=En Driver you are cleared for approach to the shuttle bay. Once you have touched and powered down please wait for the shuttle bay doors to close and seal. Chief Helpful will come o to the bay floor and give the visual all clear to depressive and open your hatch. Welcome to the Sentinel.=C=

On Duty Bridge Officer

=O= All received Sentinel, bringing her in now. =C= Driver replied as he started the landing protocols.

Charlie peered out of the hatch as the shuttle gently came to rest on the docking bay floor. Charlie instinctively straightened her uniform again as the engines powered down and patiently waited for her first glimpse at her new ship.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

“Lt Bailey,” a female officer in command gold (judging by the lack of piping on her sleeves, an ensign), tall polished black boots, and auburn red hair, clipped across the bay floor as the shuttle opened after repressurized. She was crisp, polished, poised, the epitome of an officer. She held out her hand, “Yeoman Rand. Welcome to the Sentinel. I’m to give you the tour if you wish before your meeting with the XO. Petty Officer McChevney will take your things to your quarters if you like.”

Yeoman Rand

Charlie instinctively stood a little taller at Rand’s address as she shook her hand. “Thank you ma’am, I would love a tour. I’m keen to get familiar with the ship as soon as possible,” she replied as she handed her bag to McChevney who had appeared beside her.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

“Right this way Lt.” Rand led her through the single door way into the staging room, where people waited as the shuttlebay pressurized, and then into the main corridor. “This is deck 12, the lowest deck of the Sentinel. Main engineering and a couple of the science labs extend to this deck from deck 11.” She led the new CMO to a turbolift, “The ship has 5 turbolifts centered around the main shaft of the ship. There is an access ladder to the right of each lift. Lift 5 which comes out closest to sickbay on deck 9 is the cargo lift, which makes it large enough to transport anyone on a stretcher.” The lift arrived and they stepped on. Rand grabbed a handle and twisted it “Deck 1.”

“This is lift 2 which is the only one that goes directly to the bridge and is the only direct bridge access.”

Charlie nodded, wondering if she should be taking notes. She knew life aboard a ship of this kind was fast paced, she just hoped she could keep up. “What is the current crew compliment Yeoman?” She asked curiously as they sped towards the bridge.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

“Sentinel holds a typical crew compliment of 120. Right now we are at 115 as we have some small crew rotation happening.” The lift stopped and opened onto the bridge just to the port of the comm station. At the center of the room was the Captain’s chair that sat on a 5 inch raised platform from the floor while the rest of the bridge stations were sunken below. Ahead of them was the Helm and Navigator seats and consoles. To the port side of the bridge were two engineering focused stations, while to starboard had two scientific related stations. Directly behind the ship’s captain chair was the ship’s comm station. Forward of the helm and navigation stations was the ship’s rectangular view screen.

Charlie couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement seeing the bridge for the first time. “Amazing…” she muttered quietly to herself as she looked around, trying to take it all in. She had of course seen and familiarised herself with the ship’s layout but it was a poor substitute to seeing it firsthand.

Lt (jg) Bailey, CMO

Rand smiled, a little of pride showing in the ship she served. “It really is. I never get tired of it. There is no medical station on the bridge, but previous CMOs have used the the auxiliary science station when needed.” Rand motioned toward the back and port side of the bridge.

When she was ready, Rand took her to deck 3. “Deck 2 is entirely dedicated to torpedo control, launch, storage, etc. It also houses escape pods.” The door opened and they stepped onto deck 3. “Deck 3 houses the CO and XO quarters.” She motioned to a set of two doors along the outside hull, there was also another door between them. “Transporter room 1 is also on this deck as well as the second deck of escape pods.” They stopped by a door on the aft side of the deck and Rand stepped up to allow it to open. “Conference room. Senior staff meetings and other small official gatherings are held here.”

Bump

Charlie nodded, trying to take everything in and desperately hoping there wasn’t some sort of test at the end. “How long have you served on the Sentinel?” She asked as she had a quick peek in the conference room.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

Rand smiled as she led the way to the closest lift, “Just over two years. Was assigned right after graduation. She’s a wonderful ship and better crew. Where are you coming from Lt?”

Charlie smiled, it was nice to be able to talk to someone more familiar with the ship. “My last posting was the Defiant as a trauma specialist. It was a good posting but not much chance for progression and I felt I was ready for a new challenge.” She added with a grin.

The lift took them down one deck. “Deck 4 aft is the machine shop. The rest of the deck is dedicated to VIP and department head quarters. You are located in berth 13 foreword port.” Rand led the way around the outer ring of the deck and stopped at a door with Lt Bailey’s name on a plate to the side of the door. Rand pressed the control and stepped aside. “This is you.” The quarters contained a modest work/entertainment station opposite a bedroom large enough for a full size bed, dresser, side table, and large closet. A compact bathroom contained a walk-in shower and basic amenities.

Charlie raised an eyebrow as she saw her accommodations which were considerably more comfortable than her last posting. “Lovely, thank you,” she replied as she had a quick look round. “Is this our last stop?” She asked, hoping she could settle in.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

“Well there are other areas I can show you, but it’s not required. I am always happy to show you later if you like.” Rand picked up a PaDD that had been left. “This has your department roster, map of the ship, galley schedule, ship events, etc. Sickbay, the galley, and lounge are all on deck 9. If you need anything, just use the comm panels.” Rand understood wanting to get settled, especially on a new ship with so much going on.

Yeoman Rand

Charlie smiled warmly as she took the PaDD. “Thank you Yeoman, you have been most helpful, I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it, I won’t keep you from your other duties,” she added with a wink.

Lt (jg) Bailey (CMO)

Rand had given up explaining that she enjoyed what she did and liked to help. It made her useful. The crew kept her busy, and she liked it that way. “It was my pleasure, Lt. Welcome to the Sentinel.” Rand stepped back, pressing the control for the door and then stepped through to the corridor as the door closed behind her.
