A Church, not A Chapel

Posted April 16, 2020, 3:41 a.m. by Ensign Max Church (Nurse) (Russell Watt)

Maxine “Max” Church transported up to the USS Sentinel, once her orders were confirmed by the administrative staff on duty at the departure point on Earth. It was fairly blowing a gale on the surface and her auburn hair was blown about as a result. She had been looking forward to this date for a long time, each of her failed attempts to get into the Academy, followed by her discovery that becoming a Doctor wasn’t for her, but her desire to be able to help Doctors to “cure coughs and wheezes and diseases called incurable”, rather than studying things under the microscope, meant that she went into Nursing rather than science. The teleporter effect lasted for an instant and then the natural environs of Earth were replaced by the metallic stark lines of the Sentinel which would be her home for the next several …
- weeks?
- months?
- years?

On board the sentinel, her hair had settled itself down, and so she had brushed it out of her face, showing her freckled face and pale blue eyes. She supposed the length of her appointment depended on whether she was called on away missions or not. She sat in on the necessary lectures about protecting your Senior Officers while on landing parties, and that was another reason why she went for Medical rather than Security.

She shared her journey up with four eager young Security Ensigns - Joe, Jim, June and Jude - she went through the Academy with them, and she knew that more than likely they’d be the ones stepping on landmines, getting eaten by carnivorous nuts, being drained of their salt or aging in an instant rather than one of the higher ups on board the ship. She knew they’d all been to spend time with their families before meeting up with Max and transporting up to the ship.

“Maxine Church, Nurse, Registration Number 47X24974.” Maxine said to the officer, holding out her transfer orders for scanning.

“Proceed, Ensign Church,” came the computer voice, once her orders were scanned. The voice was metallic sounding and artificial and got on her nerves, but it was what it was, and she supposed she’d get used to it as time went by. Max headed off one way and the four security ensigns went the other way, either to their own quarters or the security office, Max guessed. She went to the turbolift and took it to the deck with her quarters, greeted the crewmate that was sharing her living area and then headed to Deck 5 and the ship’s sickbay to check in with the CMO.

The doors opened at her approach and she looked around the first of the rooms that would be her main base of operations while on board the Sentinel. The two biobeds seemed to both be in working order, and she saw the doors into the Surgery Suite, the CMO’s office and the Recovery Ward. Not knowing what else to do, Max went to the door of the CMO’s office to see if someone was in there.
