“If there is a substance present in the mine that has been identified as an irritant,” she explained, “then we must take precautions to guard against our own contamination. The fire might have deposited particles of this substance throughout the surrounding area. Or indeed they may be airborne.”

Almost at the mine now, the Vulcan brought their transport to a stop and reached for her tricorder, scanning the immediate area in an attempt to answer her theory on particles of the irritant having escaped the confines of the mine itself.

The mine didnt seem to have any of the red ore particles in the air, the mine fire now more up close was fed by the ore though in piles. Also now up close she was picking up the earlier radio signal in the mine, if she was right it was a disaster beacon used by miners in case of collapses like this. Nearby the herd of cattle, snorted and pawed the ground. Some nudging the fence in places and almost glaring at the fire truck and ‘invaders’ to their nearby home.

CPO Black Wolf’s voice came over the communicator.

=^=Captain, Cmdr. Cerny, we’ve been able to access logs from the colony.”

The last three logs from third to most recent came up. =/\= This is Administrator Viv of Deba Colony administration log. I’m happy to report that our efforts to dig deep in the nearby mine has broken through in Tunnel Alpha-2! The ore were processing out of there is of the highest quality for building metals. Our miners also report a strange unknown reddish ore though which has caused those not protected extreme irritation on their skins. Ms Roberts from the dairy farm was our first ‘effected’ and showed signs of physical and mental irritation, but after a brief clean up and scrub down in the biolabs she returned home later that day to milk her cows. Thankfully production is also up there and we should be ready to send a comm alert for pick up by a sector cargo ship.=/\= Viv said, this log was from about 5 weeks ago.

The next log came up =/\= Administrator Viv of Deba Colony supplemental log to previous admin log. The science boys are in a tizzy about this ‘red ore’ we found. The stuff somehow has properties like that of a thinking organic being they claim. Insane I say! Thinking rocks, pish! Whats next? Intelligent lava beasts? =/\= She said. There was a pause then she continued =/\= Anyhow it seems since my report two days ago to the previous log Ms Roberts’ cattle have grown, for lack of a better term, grumpy. They keep finding ways out of their confinement pens, and one of their attendants got kicked in the head giving him quite the concussion. I’m confident the cattle came be brought under control by whatever is making them grumpy and I’ve been assured nothing due to this ‘red ore’ is the cause, nor will it effect the other cattle herds nearby.=/\= Viv said ending the log, this was two days after the previous log.

The final log came up then, in this Viv sounded desperate and out of breath, in the background there was the sounds of screams, laser pistol fire, angry sounding ‘mooing’ and what could be explosives going off. =/\= This is Administrator Viv of Deba Colony, if you’re listening to this, do not, I repeat DO NOT trust the cows! The red ore we found it DOES have intelligent properties to it, some kind of parasitical life form which has enhanced the local cattle beyond normal. They’re rebelling!!! =/\= she said almost sounding half laughing or hysterical at the idea of rebel cows. =/\= We were able to isolate the children in the mines in protective clothing with a few of the teenage children. The fires there will keep them safe from the cows for now, the ore burning. We’ve provided them enough food, water, supplies, and the means to dig out if needed for 5 weeks. We’re....=/\= there was suddenly the sound of crashing and someone shouting before Viv continued sounding scared now. =/\= We’ve drawn off the cattle’s anger from the children, hopefully someone comes before they’re forced to dig themselves out and face the cattle’s wrath. =/\= Another bang was heard and more mooing and laser pistol fire. =/\= Oh god the herd is breaking down the barricades! Please if you’re hearing this I’ve unlocked remote system access to all colony systems. I’m hoping the parasite cattle can’t operate our technology yet but they’re learning things fast if the science boys are right. Find the children, and scorch this planet if you got to0! =/\= Another bang this one sounding nearby with an angry deep ‘mooooo’ sound. =/\= I gotta go, this is Vic signing off. =/\= She said ending the call.

I’m sending protective suits to both parties in case you have to go into the mines to get the children. We’re scanning for life signs and hoping we’ll be able to beam them out. If you can get a sample of the ore, I’ll have science and medical start studying it in hopes of creating a vaccine or remedy. If it affects bovines, who knows what other animals it might affect.=^=

CPO Black Wolf (Helm)

T’Pria absorbed the information impassively, although sporadically her eyes would shift towards the herd and then back again. Once the helmsman had concluded his speech, she allowed herself one raised eyebrow in the direction of Cerny, before tapping at her own commbadge and replying =^= Thank you. The suits will be most useful. As will be any further information on life signs if you can obtain it. I shall have someone report back conditions from within the mine. =^=

Then, turning to the two officers in the back, she declared, “I suggest we split the party. Two people to examine the mines and two to continue observation of the cows. I volunteer to take the mine.”

Both tasks seemed equally laden with danger and she would not presume to dictate the choice to another, even if she were ranking officer here. Which of course, she was not.

“Sir?” she added, dutifully, at the XO.

GM CockRoach

As she waited for the XO to respond, T’Pria was already examining the protective suits beamed down from the Sentinel…

“We should prioritize the mine rescue,” Cerny said as he thought everything over. “If they really did put all the children there with five weeks of supplies, then they’re going to be starving by now if they’re still alive. The security men can cover the entrance in case we need to bring any survivors back to the surface before beam out.”

a call came through on the communicator: =/\=Zarath to Ivo, we’re going to head for the mine indicated in the log Blackwolf sent. Are you and T’pria finished? We’ve already lost a man to one of the bull creatures, so I want you to be extra careful… Update me as soon as you can and we’ll plan to meet up./=/\=

-Zarath, CO

Ivo briefly made a face that T’Pria might have noticed if she were paying attention; something slightly annoyed him about the Captain’s call.

Already out of the vehicle and beginning to suit up, still T’Pria managed to catch the XO’s expression through the passenger window of the firetruck and she murmured, not quite to herself, “We are trained Starfleet officers, Captain. I am sure we can handle a herd of cows.”

Ivo took the communicator off of his belt and flipped it open in one very practiced move. =/\= Zarath, this is Cerny: Understood. T’Pria and the rest of our team are actually at the mine entrance right now. We’ve got a fire truck, and we’re already planning a rescue mission. Should we wait for you? =/\=

– Ivo Cerny, XO/CSO

The answer came back directly. Surely Ivo could picture the Captain’s expression. =/\=If you’ve got a plan, go on in. We’ll join you as we can. Be safe./=/\=
-Zarath, CO

Encased within the protective clothing and appearing all the more irritable for that fact, T’Pria nodded to Cerny. “The Captain’s obvious confidence in us is most reassuring.”
From behind the face shield it was not quite possible to determine whether the substantial sarcasm was intended, or merely just another curious, acoustical effect.

Then, turning to face the burning mine, she added over her shoulder, “Shall we go, Commander?”
