After settling in and changing into a fresh uniform, Michelle slowly made her way through the Starbase. Eventually she found herself in the Command Center, heading towards the Fleet Commander’s office.

It seemed like only yesterday she was having a meeting with one of the Starfleet brass. It was then that Admiral Witting had assigned her to the position of the Viking’s First Officer. It was no secret the reputation that the Viking had as a ship. It wasn’t particularly an assignment most officers would desire. Often times the joke was that you got assigned to the Viking when Starfleet had no real use for you or no where else to put you.

Michelle never did buy into all the stories of haunting and supernatural occurrences. Although after what had happened to the Viking she was starting to reconsider her views. Deep down she knew there was some sort of explanation for the ship simply disappearing and ceasing to exist, but the data that had been collected didn’t shed any light onto the phenomenon.

Walking up to an NE who was working at a console, Michelle inquired if the Fleet Commander was in his office. The NE nodded, and Michelle made her way over to the office door, which was closed.

Ringing the chime, she smoothed out her hair and tugged at the bottom of her uniform jacket. These kinds of meetings were never fun, and she was sure the Fleet Commander would have plenty of questions for her.

“Enter,” came the growl from within, a voice graveled similar to someone who had smoked most of their life.

When the door hissed open a Commodore sat in a simple desk with simple items, the office held only one item that was at all personal and that was a shadow box with all of the man’s pips and commendations. K’hal was a hard man. Chiseled features of a man who has seen too much in his life, and eyes that were alternating between dead and pointed depending on how interested in the conversation he was.

Michelle strode through the door, taking in the man that sat before her.

“Allen. I wasn’t expecting you so soon. Where is the other captain,” he asked eyes darting around as if she was going to appear at any given moment. When she failed to appear he turned his eyes back to Michelle. “The admiralty has been talking. Meridian is a strong fleet, and you have been reassigned to me… as you can tell because you are here.”

“Captain Ravenfall is gone,” Michelle said flatly. Did the man not read the report she had compiled of the events? “I put as much detail as I could into my report, little as that was.”

He took a breath, “Do you want a coffee? Scotch? This is going to be a long conversation… Captain.”

Michelle raised an eyebrow curiously. Captain?? Without being offered, she took a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk. “Scotch. Neat.” She said, crossing one leg over the other and tossing her long black hair behind her.

The man reached into his drawer and pulled out a bottle and two glasses. “Replicator tastes too clean. It isn’t good if there isn’t a little dust on the bottle,” K’hal explained as he pushed one of the glasses towards the Allen, “and yes. Captain. I see that eyebrow.” He took a quick sip before continuing, “Problem is out here there is a shortage of qualified officers to take command of these vessels. You already know your… ship.”

Michelle took a swig of the drink, swirling it around in her mouth for a moment before swallowing. She wondered if he had even bothered to read her file, or did he simply not care about her past transgressions?

At the last part he looked away and rolled his eyes, “Well knew. We found a mothballed Viking class The Odin. Follow the bouncing ball if you will… The Odin, uh, retired the Odin and got a shinny new Mythology Class ship, the Viking… well you know what happened to the Viking. Anyway there was enough of the old Odin to cobble together a working replacement. You can rename her if you wish, though I suggest NCC-88750-B. Keeps the paper work simpler on my end since I am just moving some paint and people around.”

He paused, “At any rate, you know the class, you know the crew, you keep the paperwork simple so, you can have the fourth pip if you want it. If you do, we are going to need to find you a new XO. I have an idea in mind if you don’t.”

Taking another swig of her drink, Michelle stifled the urge to roll her eyes. So she wasn’t even being given a new ship. They had pulled some old duster out of moth balls and patched her up and thrown it at her. Still, beggars couldn’t be choosers. The fact that Starfleet Command was giving her a chance on taking the Captain’s chair for herself was a feat of its own.

“I would appreciate your recommendation,” Michelle said, knowing full well in this situation that her cooperation was best. She could only imagine the type of First Officer they would stick her with.
