Korczak was in his office at 0400, a full two hours before the Captain was to arrive. His things had arrived late that night, so he was in the process of putting things as he needed them and soon the room took shape.

The office was obviously going to be different from the rest of the ship. It had the feel more of an old fashioned den or study than an office. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship and bookcases now lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects and in more than afew languages. The desk was moved, set against the opposite wall facing away from the corner, window to the left of a person seated at the desk and allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs.

Rende was up early, she wasn’t too thrilled with this new design of uniforms. She’d have to try and tailor it because it just wasn’t fitting right. And unlike Eldorin who wore that spectacular mid 2200s uniform it was important for Rende to show an image of current Federation Strength. Coffee mug in hand, the hot beverage arming her hands through the insulation and the aroma waking her up as much as the actual drink she stopped in front of Korczak’s office, stifled a yawn, and pressed the chime.

The door slid open as the Counselor was straightening a picture on the wall. “Good morning, Captain. I trust you slept well?” he asked as he stepped back and eyed the picture to ensure it was straight. “I do have some tea and fresh coffee available, if you prefer it to what you are drinking now. Please, do be seated. Anywhere is fine.” and he went to the desk and picked up a single PaDD. Handing it to her, he said “All of the records sorted by priority, Ma’am. We can begin whenever you are ready.”

Rende nodded, “I did, thank you. Yourself?” She took the PaDD and glanced over it with a nod. She set it down long enough to top her coffee off and then sat down in one of the chairs, because the couch looked comfortable, too comfortable for this time in the morning. “Alright Cmdr. Let’s get started.” She blew across the top of the coffee cup and then sipped at it. It wasn’t Eldorin’s favorite blend but it was very good.

Korczak took a seat opposite and set his hands in his lap. He had no PaDD himself, but spoke easily as he began. “First record is Petty Officer Malcom Fitzhugh. Upon review, he exhibits signs of depression and manic responses. I correlated his past evaluations with their closest current departmental review. As you can see, he is showing a steady decline in performance. That, coupled with his increasingly negative psychological assessments, leave sme no choice but to recommend he be transferred off the Viking and sent back to Sol system for further assessment and then they can determine if he remains in Star Fleet.”

Rende scrolled through the different evaluations and reports. Did she trust Korcak’s assessment and determination? Absolutely, that’s why she’d asked for him. Did she need to be aware of the details of what she was signing? Equally absolutely. Rende never hesitated on doing what was best for the individual and crew as a whole. Saving the man’s feelings wasn’t what was best, worrying over offending him, wasn’t best. All indications showed a man who was past the line of “fit for duty.” He’d been an outstanding officer before hand, but events and stressors had pushed him past the coping level. Viking was no longer the place for him. She nodded once as she came to the end of the file and signed it. “Next?”

“Ensign Josiah Cuthbert. Engineering. Top marks on reviews, timely, volunteers for extra shifts. On paper an exemplary officer. Reviewing his assessments, I find a problematic tendency to overinflate his own importance, both professionally and socially. While egotism and narcissism are not disqualifies in and of themselves, he does have a documented record during his pre-teen and teen years of anti-social and borderline violent behavior. I recommend a temporary shift in permanent duty station so that he can be assessed for potential psychological disorders up to and including sociopathy.”
