Korczak was in his office at 0400, a full two hours before the Captain was to arrive. His things had arrived late that night, so he was in the process of putting things as he needed them and soon the room took shape.

The office was obviously going to be different from the rest of the ship. It had the feel more of an old fashioned den or study than an office. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship and bookcases now lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects and in more than afew languages. The desk was moved, set against the opposite wall facing away from the corner, window to the left of a person seated at the desk and allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs.

Rende was up early, she wasn’t too thrilled with this new design of uniforms. She’d have to try and tailor it because it just wasn’t fitting right. And unlike Eldorin who wore that spectacular mid 2200s uniform it was important for Rende to show an image of current Federation Strength. Coffee mug in hand, the hot beverage arming her hands through the insulation and the aroma waking her up as much as the actual drink she stopped in front of Korczak’s office, stifled a yawn, and pressed the chime.

The door slid open as the Counselor was straightening a picture on the wall. “Good morning, Captain. I trust you slept well?” he asked as he stepped back and eyed the picture to ensure it was straight. “I do have some tea and fresh coffee available, if you prefer it to what you are drinking now. Please, do be seated. Anywhere is fine.” and he went to the desk and picked up a single PaDD. Handing it to her, he said “All of the records sorted by priority, Ma’am. We can begin whenever you are ready.”

Korczak, CNS

Rende nodded, “I did, thank you. Yourself?” She took the PaDD and glanced over it with a nod. She set it down long enough to top her coffee off and then sat down in one of the chairs, because the couch looked comfortable, too comfortable for this time in the morning. “Alright Cmdr. Let’s get started.” She blew across the top of the coffee cup and then sipped at it. It wasn’t Eldorin’s favorite blend but it was very good.

Korczak took a seat opposite and set his hands in his lap. He had no PaDD himself, but spoke easily as he began. “First record is Petty Officer Malcom Fitzhugh. Upon review, he exhibits signs of depression and manic responses. I correlated his past evaluations with their closest current departmental review. As you can see, he is showing a steady decline in performance. That, coupled with his increasingly negative psychological assessments, leave sme no choice but to recommend he be transferred off the Viking and sent back to Sol system for further assessment and then they can determine if he remains in Star Fleet.”

Korczak, CNS

Rende scrolled through the different evaluations and reports. Did she trust Korcak’s assessment and determination? Absolutely, that’s why she’d asked for him. Did she need to be aware of the details of what she was signing? Equally absolutely. Rende never hesitated on doing what was best for the individual and crew as a whole. Saving the man’s feelings wasn’t what was best, worrying over offending him, wasn’t best. All indications showed a man who was past the line of “fit for duty.” He’d been an outstanding officer before hand, but events and stressors had pushed him past the coping level. Viking was no longer the place for him. She nodded once as she came to the end of the file and signed it. “Next?”
Rende, CO

“Ensign Josiah Cuthbert. Engineering. Top marks on reviews, timely, volunteers for extra shifts. On paper an exemplary officer. Reviewing his assessments, I find a problematic tendency to overinflate his own importance, both professionally and socially. While egotism and narcissism are not disqualifies in and of themselves, he does have a documented record during his pre-teen and teen years of anti-social and borderline violent behavior. I recommend a temporary shift in permanent duty station so that he can be assessed for potential psychological disorders up to and including sociopathy.”

Korczak, CNS

Rende read over the file slowly. A penchent for certain behavior was not necessarily an indication of an inability to learn, grow, and mature. Eldorin and herself were examples of that. However the Viking’s history didn’t leave one much room for optimism and hope to play a role. And sociopathy was not something she felt anyone on this crew should be attempting to deal with: either personally or adjacently. Though she had no doubt Korczak was capable. “I’ll approve it, but I would like you to speak to him personally and add your own assessment to his file before he disembarks. That’s a serious evaluation for a serious condition, to be recommending solely on someone else’s assessments.” It wasn’t an order, she knew Korczak had A LOT on his plate dealing with the crew, but if he could find the time, she would prefer him to do so. She signed off on his recommendation for Cuthbert, drumming her fingers in a sharp staccato on the arm of the chair.

Korczak nodded and said “Absolutely. I may afterwards be able to recommend a particular duty station as well. Next Petty Officer H’tril. Vulcan Medical Officer. While he is exemplary and conducts himself with professionalism, he also exhibits a great deal of empathy. In a Vulcan, that is… odd. And if you look at his last medical exam, you will note he had a bout of Crigalian flu. Vulcans possess a natural immunity to that strain. I think he may be at least part Romulan. Not a psychological issue… unless he has repressed that knowledge or is unaware and it is brought to his attention. But it could be a Security issue. I am recommending to you directly, no record, that I interview him along with the XO or Security Chief being present. This could be a matter of a heritage being hidden from a child. Not an uncommon occurrence in the Vulcan and Romulan communities since the disaster.”

Korczak, CNS

Rende sipped her coffee contemplating Korczak’s words. “I’m not overly familiar with my XO yet, but his service speaks for him. As for the CoS, well, I obviously know him quite well. We have personal experience with having to hide who and what we are. I leave it to you to decide if that would help your interview. Lt Asam will give you his honest take on it and he also will not hesitate to do his job.” They had kept their own heritage from their own son. There were reasons for it, and at the time it seemed best, but years of reflection…well. “Go ahead with the interview. You will make sure whoever you get to assist with the interview understands to be discreet.”
Rende CO

“Of course.” Korczak responded. “That is all of the records I wanted to discuss at this time… so now let us talk about you. May as well get your assessment done while you are here, yes?” and he crossed one leg over the other and smiled slightly.

Korczak, CNS

“What is that saying, ‘I am an open book.’ Not really, more like a old closed dusty tome sitting on a back self.” She sipped her coffee over a grin at her own awkward humor. “Where do you want to start?” She was old there was a lot they could talk about.
Rende, CO

“Wherever you like.” came the measured reply with a small smile of his own. “I often find it better to let the one being assessed do the heavy lifting… at least at the beginning.” and he chuckled. “But, if you need a nudge… then start by telling me about why you want to be the Captain of a star ship?”

Korczak, CNS
