Boarding check in’s were routine and not usually a thing Devin minded, it was interesting meeding new folks and seeing how they reacted to her comments not that she went out of her way to be a brat all the time. Though her cheekiness she never really tried to curb. There wasn’t a point in being serious when it wasn’t the time for it in her opinion. She rang the chime on the office of the Counselor and waited to see how this meeting was going to go.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat eccentric)

The door slid open to reveal an office that was…

Empty.

Well, not totally empty. There was a desk and two chairs… but that was it.

Except for the man seated at said desk. It was a bit odd, seeing him there. At first he appeared as simply part of the background and then poof, there he was. He was of average build, with brown hair and brown eyes. His features were wholly average and unremarkable. In fact, the only thing remarkable about him, other than the Lieutenant Commander pips on his collar, were the actual glasses he wore. Spectacles in this day and age were rare… and almost always unnecessary. But on his face they were… somehow appropriate.

“You must be Ensign Ward.” said the man with a smile. He stood up… height? Average. “I am Janusz Korczak, ship’s Counselor. Please, do come in.” and he indicated a chair in front of the desk. The man’s voice was simultaneously soothing and somewhat confusing. Not in understanding, his diction and words were crystal clear; but his accent was more like accents. It sounded like there were multiple, and very different, accents speaking at once. Not unpleasant, but certainly not expected. “I apologize for the lack of decor, I am still waiting for my belongings to arrive.” and he walked around the desk and extended a hand.

Korczak, CNS

“Are you a polyglot?” Devin asked before she had offered an answer to his question, she felt her face flush with embarrassment and gave a sheepishly cheeky grin, “Sorry, please call me Devin,” she shook the offered hand with a gentle yet firm grip. “I am still settling in myself so don’t worry about the decor on my account.” As long as he didn’t bring out some type of arachnid fascination she would be willing to put up with just about anything in the room.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat and eccentric)

“Devin it is, and an excellent observation. I am, actually; although I haven’t heard that word used often. Well done. Please, have a seat.” and he indicated a chair and took a seat in the other.

“So how long ago did you arrive?” he asked and pushed the glasses up the bridge of his nose slightly. If they were having ‘assessment’, then it was hard to tell if this was part. The man had no PaDD or note taking materials.

Korczak, CNS

“I like using old words keeps them from being forgotten.” she said with another cheeky grin, as she took the seat he had indicated. “I arrived about twenty minutes ago. Still plenty to unpack and what not but I wanted to get my evals done so I could get to work if needed.” she said lightly. She never liked unpacking all at once anyway. Doing a bit at a time and getting it just to her liking over the course of a few days. She knew she would likely change the interior colors as much as she changed her hair color, the vivid blue would grow trying after a while but for now she was enjoying it.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat and eccentric)

“Was this your first stop? Or are you simply incredibly efficient at the on-boarding process?” Korczak asked with an easy smile and soft chuckle.

Korczak, CNS

“Second after dropping off my duffle in my quarters, going to go see the CMO afterwards, and provided I am not interrupting, meeting my head of department and then the Captain, after that if nothing is needed I will go finish unpacking and see what is next.” Devin said with a grin as she answered the Counselor.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat and eccentric)

“Why rush through the process? You are given a full forty-eight hours to check in and get settled. Why not take your time?” Korczak asked.

Korczak, CNS

Devin blinked at him, clearly surprised, “Really, well my last posting it was a rush to get everything done, lots of transfers and such at the same time.” she pondered his words and grinned, “I will take time to finish unpacking after this meeting then.” She could take the time to rearrange until she had it just right. That was the most novel thing since learning Tolkien elvish.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat and eccentric)

Korczak nodded and said “May ease the settling in part. So, why don’t we start by you telling me about yourself?” He still hadn’t picked up a PaDD or anything to make notes on, but he simply sat and watched the officer.

Korczak, CNS

“I like puzzles and mysteries which makes sense since the majority of my work is investigations solving.
I enjoying learning languages few other things too.” Devin said, with a cheeky grin as she looked right back at the counselor. She wondered at his method for remembering since he hadn’t touched a PaDD, she found herself pondering if he had the type of memory for recalling conversations and the like there was a term for it but she wasn’t sure yet if that applied to him or not.

Devin Ward, Security officer, (brat cat and eccentric)

“Languages, you say?” and his nondescript brown eyes sparkled. “I am somewhat of a language buff myself. What languages do you speak? And are you studying any right now?”

Korczak, CNS

Devin laughed softly, “I know lots of what most consider useless languages from books like Tolkien elvish, and others. As for recently, I just finished learning some Romulan, I am fluent in Cardassian, Trill among many more but I don’t want to boast too much.”

Devin Ward security officer (brat cat and eccentric)

“Rihanha? Rhuissa. Taome far oaeeueaeaith irha hwiiy ueiik’h’unhr ieiuqh?” (Romulan? Excellent. How far along are you in your studies?) came a rapid fire reply with a perfect accent. Korczak was excited. He didn’t know many others who like languages… and that fact spoke volumes about the Ensign.

Korczak, CNS

“Rashant… sudan ropengneh nah.” (I admit… I was not expecting this). Devin replied with a cheeky grin her eyes alight with delighted surprise. “I have learned two of the three dialects still working on the last.” She switched back to federation basic her accent lilting slightly before settling back into standard tones.

Korczak cocked his head slightly to the side and said “You weren’t? I suppose that is to be expected. But if you weren’t expecting that… what were you expecting?”

Korczak, CNS

Devin shook her head softly, “No real expectations really this session is like none I have had the opportunity to experience but I am not complaining one bit. Perhaps later when you have a moment, we can try, latrunculo?” (A board game).

Devin Ward security officer (brat cat and eccentric)

Korczak inclined his head. “I am unfamiliar with the game, but I am happy to learn. So what differs from this conversation from ones before? And why do you think that this one is better or worse?”

Korczak, CNS

“Not better or worse just different, you have no PaDD out and I certainly haven’t seen you taking any notes, but you give the impression you need it either. Your style is different and approach is different I like it.” she said with a grin. It was going to be interesting indeed on this ship. Devin was looking forward to meeting more of the crew too.

Devin Ward, Security officer (brat cat and eccentric)

Korczak smiled and said “I will take that as a compliment. As for my lack of note taking materials?” and he tapped his temple with his left index finger and winked. “Eidetic memory. Comes in handy sometimes.” and he chuckled. “And I am glad you are comfortable. Are you usually comfortable in new situations? Around new people?”
