Mike had but one more stop to make before getting any permanent assignments from his DH . That was of course now with the ship’s Counselor. Most people found this a tedious task with some fellow you never met trying to poke around inside of the attic of your brain , as if he smelled a dead raccoon up there or something .

He always remembered what his Great Grandfather had said on the issue of Counselors. “Boy the trouble with us and Counselors, or pretty much anyone that doesn’t live where we live is that we’re pretty much crazy as heck to begin with! It’s a kind of crazy that they won’t ever understand so they’ll more times than not say we have poetic souls or something like that!

Mike’s only drawback with Counselors had ever been that Mike was a happy soul who loved people and loved to meet anyone new. This of course led to him being really talkative. This in turn led to him asking questions when the Counselors thought they should be asking some.

So it was that Mike walked on into the Counselors office whistling an old tune that didn’t really seem to have much of a rhythm to it. But Mike had a spring to his step as if the blossoms had just opened in the low pasture in springtime. Something that if all the stories were true rarely happened in Counselor offices.

The door slid open silently to a room much different than most of the ship. It seemed the Counselor was at least proficient at making the space less ‘clinical’.

The office was obviously different from the rest of the ship. It had the feel more of an old fashioned den or study than an office. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship by wall mounted lights; and bookcases now lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects and in more than a few languages. The desk was moved, set against the opposite wall facing away from the corner, window to the left of a person seated at the desk and allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one chair which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. A low table graced the middle of the area, and on it was a small bowl filled with softly glowing crystals. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs.

The man seated at the desk was wholly plain looking. So plain looking in fact that he may have been overlooked entirely except for the fact that he wore actual glasses on his face.

Korczak rose and said “Ensign Jones, I take it? A pleasure. I am Lieutenant Commander Korczak.” and he held out his hands to the new arrival. “Please, have a seat. Would you care for anything to drink?” he asked politely. The man’s voice was clear and easy to understand, but his accent was certainly unique… as if two wholly unrelated accents were vying for supremacy, but neither one was dominant.

Mike stopped in mid- bounce and stopped whistling at the sight of the office. The sight of the books alone not covered nor in cases was astounding. Then he remembered. There were certain companies which manufactured such things. And having them was a rich man’s hobby.

His eyes quickly scanned the rest of the room before a small grin crept across his face. The look of the place along with the appearance of the Counselor helped Mike to get a handle on the Counselor. For the first few seconds until his eyes looked elsewhere, at which point he had to re-start his reassessment all over again. His mind was still churning when he heard the Commander welcoming him.

Mike quickly took the Counselor’s hand and pumped it up and down as he smiled. “Yes, sir that would be me sir. Mike Jones Ensign. Here for my psych eval. “He replied to the Counselor. “Drink?” Mike asked as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully,” Can you have the replicators whip up anything like a good Pomegranate?” Mike then looked around at the choice of seats. He shrugged and went to walk to the one sitting in front of the desk. Looking again at the office Mike asked as he waited for the juice, “So what’s the conversation about today sir?” he asked.

OOC: Don’t forget to sign off on your posts!

IC: Korczak stood and went to the replicator. He ordered the drink and tea for himself as the Ensign asked his question. Korczak turned and smiled slightly. “That is entirely up to you, Ensign. I am hear to learn about you, not dictate a preconceived conversation.” and he moved to one of the seats opposite and sat down the drinks and then sat himself. Unlike any other Counselor, Korczak had no kind of PaDD or notebook to take notes; no recording device of any kind. He simply sat, crossed his legs at the knee and looked at Ensign Jones. “But… if a starting point helps break the ice, why don’t you tell me about your trip here? Uneventful. I hope.” and the plain little man smiled slightly and then sipped his tea.

OOC: Sorry about that!

Mike listened to the Counselor with apparent interest. About the same interest that a chubby sparrow would show a Falcon as he flies too close. Mike took a sip of his drink and waited until the Counselor was settled in his chair before replying. “Well, it was eventful if you enjoy being a resident in a can of sardines!” Mike took another sip. This was pretty darn good stuff! “Actually, I came in on a supply ship jammed in between some crates of mechanical parts for something and some crates marked seed. I had my knees up against my chest most of the way in.”

Mike’s eyes finally locked on some of the books and without looking at Korczak he spoke saying, “That’s one heck of a hobby you have there sir. Are any of them real or are they the collector reproductions? ” Mike fidgeted after the question as if he had at least two or three other things going on in his mind at the same time. Before the Counselor could answer Mike said, “I have a plan sir. Sometimes it bothers me.”

Korczak looked at the books and smiled. “They are about seventy percent originals, thirty reproductions. The photos are real, though.” and he looked back at Jones. “A plan, you say… a plan for what?” he asked in way that was curious but not prying.

Mike smiled a bit at the tone, but he had something on his mind, and he had it on his mind to talk to someone about it. And well like it or not Counselors had to listen to people’s problem like it or not!

Mike turned his eyes as a look came across his face showing that he was trying to figure out how to word something. “Well, it’s a life plan actually and if I were to be brutally honest, I would have to give my wife at least half the credit. Or blame depending on how you’re feeling in the moment.” He sighed then before plowing ahead. “My wife and I agreed that serving in star fleet might move my career along a bit faster than if I were practicing on Earth. Right now, I wouldn’t mind starting a clinic or perhaps teaching. Problem is my lack of experience and money. So here I am.” Mike chuckled then and said, “Problem is I’m missing her and my son a lot more than what I thought I would. “

Korczak nodded in understanding and then said “So why did you not bring them with you? The Viking is a large vessel, there is the room to do so.”

Mike stopped moving altogether for a couple of seconds and then frowning he finally laughed and said, “Well darn. Never much thought about it really. ” Pausing then he admitted. “We really didn’t know the size or the attitude of the ship concerning such things. Right now, though with the son being only three months I wouldn’t want him going into space until he gets a bit more bone development. At least six months or so.” Mike scratched his head then and asked the Counselor,”You really don’t think the captain wouldn’t mind?”

Korczak looked at the Ensign with a somewhat confused expression. “Why would the Captain mind? Most Star Fleet vessels house families of those who serve on them, space providing. And bone development? The ship stays at an Earth-constant gravity, so I wouldn’t foresee bone development being an issue… but my expertise in orthopedics ended during residency.” and he chuckled softly.

Mike scratched his chin now deep in thought as he sat there. His wife and himself had agreed that Quentin should grow up in the mountains. They wanted to give him a gift of a fixed and happy place he could always call home. But considering his present age and Mike’s signup of three years with star fleet. Well Quentin would only be three when he got back home. He just couldn’t see any sort of downside.

It was then that with all the joy welling up in him a large smile literally erupted across his face, and he let slip his downhome personality as he said. “Well, I’ll be a Houn dog in the middle of a bunny ranch. You better be careful Counselor you’ll talk yourself outta business!”
