It was funny the places one found themselves when fate played her game. One moment you where serving on a ship heading to your home world, surrounded by fellow synthetics the next you were walking the halls of a federation star ship surrounded by organics. The Viking was different but similar at the same time. Officers went about there business, the engines hummed and all was bathed in the electric light of the ships lights.

To say KT-QT was nervous would be an understatement she was nervous for many reasons, being surrounded by members of different races, being on a new ship with a new crew and being the only member of her race among them. But despite all that she was excited at all the new things she would be able to learn and what the future may hold. And one of the first steps into that future lay before her. Pressing the chime to the captains office. she waited to be let in as she double checked her uniform.

KT-QT (Engineer)

Kohr frowned at the PaDD in his gauntleted grip so hard that his ridges seemed to multiply. He stood stock still in front of the captain’s desk, only his eyes moving as his mind drank in the displayed information. With a grunt, the Klingon swiped the data aside and returned his attention to Rende. The woman was in her customary position during their morning briefings: leaned back in her chair, elbows propped and fingers steepled, a long-suffering and slightly bemused expression on her face. Kohr set the PaDD back on her desk, slid it across the polished surface. Her hand came down on it with a sharp sound, but Rende’s gaze never left his.

And that damnable smirk never slipped.

“I do not understand how Starfleet can expect us to conduct a thorough survey with this tight a timetable,” he protested glumly. “Both the Federation and Vulcan science teams are requesting full access to astrometrics and deflector control to run their tests, and our schedule will not allow them both full measure. It is a logistical nightmare!”

“Because they are children having a tantrum. They want what they want when they want it. We will give them what they need, which is to give them the complete studies they require. But there is no president for the kind of speed they are asking for. It can’t be done unless they have some futuristic tech they intend to deliver to us. So you take what time you need and I will tell them to stop being childish.” Rende would too. That smirk widening as if she relished the idea of putting, what to her was literally a child, in their place and educate them on common knowledge.

The Klingon began to pace back and forth in front of her desk like a caged targ, muttering some very impolite things under his breath. He could feel Rende watching him, waiting for his wrath to simmer. It seemed to amuse her. Kohr took a slow breath, stopped. It amused him not to amuse her. Theirs was a game played back and forth ever since his first day aboard the Viking.

Rende did find it amusing, but not because she liked seeing her first officer agitated. He reminded her so much of herself, and even more of a younger Eldorin. Especially with Kohr’s back ground in science. She saw great things in Kohr. His temper fueled him but did not control him.

His baritone returned to its smooth, casual tone. “There is one other matter I wished to discuss with you. It is in regards to one of our latest crew additions. A synthetic life form, I believe. I am… concerned as to her ability to integrate with the rest of the crew, given the current sentiment. I have not had the opportunity to encounter one before, and I dislike being ill-prepared in dealing “

“I don’t know Kohr. I’ve met more than my fair share of species in my lifetimes. Synthetic ones as well. I’ve always found them fascinating, if not a bit argumentative in their logic. A bit Vulcan like in that way. But after the Mars incident I worry how the rest of the crew will react. And I can’t help but wonder what command’s ulterior motive might be.” At the sound of the chime Rende set down her steaming mug of apple cider and looked up at Kohr, “It appears our newest exchange officer is here, and right on time.” Pressing a button on the small desk control panel the door slid open as Rende stood up. “Luchaya KT-QT, please come in. Welcome to the Viking.

Kohr moved to just behind the captain’s shoulder, grasping his wrist with his gloved hand. He did his best to shift his mind away from the planning of duty rosters that his face would be less intimidating, but he wasn’t sure how successful he was. Nearly every first encounter with a new crewmember was a startled primitive fear-response due to the reputation of his people. Kohr’s stature did not improve matters. Given that the civilian was an artificial life form, he was interested in observing any variation.

As the captain beckoned her in KT looked around the room and then at the woman who would be her commander for the foreseeable future, unless something went horribly wrong. She was surprised to hear her native rank, she had assumed she would be given an equivalent Star fleet rank or a civilian title. That of course could still be the case but hearing the rank she was used to and with not bad pronunciation on the word was comforting

Though the point of cultural exchanges were to provide an immersive experience for the visiting officer to experience and learn about their culture quickly, Rende also thought it was a good way for the crew to learn about the visiting officer. This ship would be home for KT-QT for the duration of her stay, and it was important that she feel welcome. Though her rank held no significant importance within Star Fleet, it did to her, and Rende had served in enough militaries for such political comparisons to mean little to her.

KT smiled at the woman and handed her a padd “KT-QT reporting for duty ma’am. Here are my orders” she said plainly but with a sultry undertone . the padd contained the usual paper work however once Rende took it she would fell something like ribbon under the padd. Taking a look she would she she had been given a necklace with a glowing crystal on it. the crystal hummed ever so slightly and shone with a deep purple hue.

There was a subtle shift in Kohr’s posture at the exchange, the hint of readiness. It was the loosening of the sword, the flick of the safety, the breath before the lunge. As his conscious mind took in the gift, the Klingon’s body relaxed and his heartbeat slowed. It was an instinct, there and gone.

KT noticed the shift but did nothing. She wondered if the XO was unfamiliar with her species, it would make sense. She wondered, because if she had set out to harm the Capitan she knew the XO would be far to slow to stop her. But she could respect his caution

“It is a pleasure. May I also introduce Cmdr Kohr our First Officer.” Rende took the PaDD and read over the woman’s orders after trying not to squint or hold the PaDD too far way. Eldorin would have a good laugh at her and then make her wear those horrible reading glasses. There was nothing out of the ordinary on the PaDD. She was a gifted engineer, and Rende was thankful Eldorin would be her DH. The old man was, like her, willing to make a friend of anyone. She was also a field medic. She’d send her over to Semenza to see how that would translate to organic medicine. There was a strange buzzing with her words, in the empathic center of Rende’s brain. KT-QT and her species had emotions, and as an empath Rende could pick it up but she always had difficulty deciphering the emotions of synthetic life forms. At least until she go to know them.

KT observed and took in the XO. To say he as an imposing figure was an understatement. KT looked him up and down for an instance then hesitantly nodded at him “Sir” she said in her usual tone.

Kohr inclined his head respectfully but said nothing. It had not been made clear in what capacity she would serve aboard ship, and therefore it was not appropriate to address her with a rank or title she did not hold.

She glanced down at the necklace, it was beautiful and very unique. The color was breathtaking. Rende couldn’t quite pinpoint the cause of the hum but it was pleasant.

“A thank you gift from my people for accepting me on to your crew, and a sign of good faith.” she added once Rende had seen the necklace.

KT-QT (Engineer)

“It is a lovely gift, thank you KT-QT. I was told your people exchange gifts upon first meeting. Unfortunately my home world is long lots to the ages. But my grandchildren tell me that there is no better gift than a plant.” She smiled at the memory of them ordering her about to pick the perfect one. She set the necklace down gently and passed the PaDD to Kohr. From her desk she picked up a small pot with a small orange and purple flower growing in it and gave it to the new officer. “From my adoptive home, Ireland on Earth. It is called a Scarlet Pimpernel. The symbol of a quite famous literary hero as well. Now let’s have a seat and get to know each other.” Rende sat down in her desk chair and leaned back comfortably.

Rende, CO

KT smiled and accepted the gift. the flower was indeed beautiful the way the shadow cast over the plant made it look even more so. KT decided she would have to paint the plant when she got a chance. “Thank you Captain, for honouring our customs. If your crew are as thoughtful and as respectful as you. Then I am sure my stay will be pleasant and my report back to my queen will be equally positive.” she said kindly and respectful as she took a seat.

The Klingon’s brow raised very slightly at the mention of a queen. Were they like the Borg, then? he wondered absently.

“I must confess I am very excited to experience your ship and crew. The federation is a fascinating enigma. An organisation of peace that is unafraid to fight as a last resort. Open to new things but cautious in your approach to such things. Not eager to crush things under your heel but not afraid to do so if you feel the occasion calls for it. It will be fascinating learning more about it through this ship and its crew. I feel we will find much in common with each other ” KT said her tone taking on a more cheerful note.

KT-QT (Engineering officer)

Kohr tapped at the PaDD and queued up a list of information, then leaned over Rende’s shoulder to offer it to KT-QT. “Your assigned quarters and duty schedule for the coming week. You will wish to report to Lieutenant Asam, introduce yourself. The chief’s brogue can be… difficult to decipher at times. If you have any concerns about the expectations and responsibilities of your assignment, state them.”
—Kohr, Executive Officer—

Rende had to pull on that stoic marine training not to laugh and stay passive faced. “Yes, his brogue is quite the affectation. If you can’t understand him, tell him so. He won’t be offended. But he’s just as likely to give you a program for the UT so you can as to adjust his ‘accent’.” Rende was used to it and had had to make an effort to keep herself from slipping into her own when on duty. “You are listed as a civilian crew member on board, Kt-UT. Your responsibility level is equivalent to a full Lt, and you will have access to anything that is not classified as strictly Star Fleet. If you have any concerns or problems because of that restriction you can address them with Lt Asam or Cmdr Kohr.” Rende leaned back and looked over her shoulder at Kohr in a silent exchange of understanding. Then she looked back at KT-QT. “Tell me why your Queen chose you for this exchange, or was it all your own idea? Why did you want it?”

Rende, CO

KT took the padd, read, understood and put it down in seconds showing how fast she could process information. She the looked at the pair “My audio and vocal processors are advanced enough that I can hear a whisper in crowd at a Klingon opera with ease. Hopefully that will make thing easier, i have yet to struggle with a single organic accent.” she aid simply before thinking for a few moments

“I was selected for a few reasons, my service record, the fact I was part of the crew that rescued the crew of the hope and I am open minded.” she paused for a moment debating whether she should elaborate, but she felt it was the right thing to do. “I won’t lie diplomatic relations between my people and the federation have dropped significantly. The ban you have enforced has driven divides in my people, small ones but divides none the less. Some of the Queen’s council believe we should abandon you and cut off all communications. It’s worse in the public, a very small group believe you got what you deserved. For oppressing synthetics in the first place. Others see the attack as unforgivable but are concerned about your heavy handling of the situation. And whether or not you investigated every option before resorting to a ban” KT paused for a moment to gauge the reactions of the people in the room. Then continued.

“Some are concerned of the level of hypocrisy the federation is showing. Banning synthetics while trying to form an alliance with a race of them. However the vast majority of us want to give you a second chance.” KT said reassuringly. Yes the divides where there but they could be healed in time.

“we see the benefit of an alliance. we don’t want you as an enemy and you certainly don’t want us as one. I’ve seen enough of war and want no part in any more. So I signed up. I had interacted with star fleet officers when we shipped them back, to the federation and found myself fascinated by them. That combined with the other things mentioned, made me the perfect candidate. I want peace and I want a prosperous alliance, i wanted to give you the best opportunity to achieve that. After all it is mostly dependant on what myself and the others see from the federation and its people. I have the opportunity to be a part of something that could change the face of history.” she added hoping she had given enough reasons as to why she was there.
