She seemed to have missed or not heard his last question for a handful of minutes, her gaze far away. Then her gaze refocused. “They can be replicated, but why waste ships resources when we can make the real thing? All medicines started from plants, minerals, and other materials found in nature. And some, the replication process isn’t efficient enough. Replication creates the exact thing over and over with no…extra. Using the original plants and going through the chemical processes creates unique properties that can’t always be achieved through replication. Besides, on long term missions, conservation of resources, as well as the ability to function without all the technology is essential. Voyager taught us that.”

Fayth, med

Nearby another figure slipped in through the door, making their way into the lounge. In one hand was a PaDD about the size of a clip board. The other was free. Slipping into line at the replicators, they moved through pretty quick. Pulling away she had something resembling a plate of food and a drink with the PaDD in the crook of her arm. Scanning about, the lounge was busier than expected. So, finding a familiar face or two it was. Or at least finding other science nerds to hang out with. There was the new kid. And that doctor chick. Nodding once to herself, decision made, she began sauntering over.

“Mind if I join you two,” she asked, as she made her way into conversation range. “What’s that about Voyager,” she asked. The Voyager mission had been of particular interest, especially with the transwarp network, and all the astro data they’d picked up from the Delta Quadrant. Part of her wanted to go, but … she wasn’t sure she’d ever really want to be on a one-way long haul survey. She actually did have people get back home to, back in Kansas.

Lt. j.g. Sheridan, Sciences

“Everything has a beginning. I hope ‘she’ gives me a good start.” He smiled while implied the ship. “If that happened, you’ll be the last hope.” He didn’t exaggerate. Plants can be used for medicine, sure. If the ship’s computer was souped-down, crews would need to figure out everything by the power of nature, including water, food, oxygen, and else for survival. He hoped at least the gravity and temperature were above zero, or everything would be too hard to adapt.

Fayth laughed, “Hardly. I’m not the only one who knows these things. I may have had more practice with it than some though. But if something like that were to happen it would take the whole crew, just not one or two of us.” Sharah knew this from personal experience. And though she knew her skills were valuable, they were not the only ones needed. She looked up as someone else approached the table. She was pleasantly surprised to see someone she sort of knew, “Lt Sheridan, please join us.”

“Yeah, good points.” Tom-unit nodded after she… appeared to had access from some kind of server. Before he was about to raise but-consider-this-and-that-statements, his eyes stopped between Fayth’s neck, her insignia. Since his mouth opened, he shoveled a mushroom and filled it up to avoid further embarrassment. Then another blue uniform showed up and seated, so he rephrased, “yeah, tell us more about the Voyager. Did they have a garden too?”

Little

“En Little was asking me about the basket of plants I have with me and I was explaining why we distill medicines from actual plants rather than synthesizing them all the time. And I mentioned that knowing how to make use of our resources is essential if we are caught far away from assistance, like Voyager was.” Turning back to Little, “Not exactly. They converted their Cargo bay 2 to a hydroponics bay because of the variable environmental controls there. They used a nitrogenated soil as their alternative soil base. They were able to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for food sources (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Hydroponics). The same technique can be used to grow medicinal flowers, herbs, and roots as well.”

Fayth, med

“And provides an excellent alternative to the exact same things prepared the exact same way every meal.” said a uniquely accented voice over the din. The voice seemed to be a mixture of accents, all trying for superiority and reaching a state of equilibrium. But his words were clear and easily understandable. It came from a human male of average height and average build. Brown hair and brown eyes were the features of a wholly… well… average appearance. The man positively blended into the background save for one thing. He wore glasses. Actual glasses. He nodded to a chair at the table and set down a tray that held small dumplings, dark bread, some kind of herbal-aroma having sausage, and potatoes in a yellow sauce. He was dressed in civilian attire, blue jeans and a t-shirt under a dark brown leather jacket. “I hope you don’t mind, but seating is at a premium this evening.” and he smiled a warm smile and took a seat.

Janusz

Sharah placed the voice immediately, she was familiar with it after all. Korczak was one of the few people who could probably sneak up on her. Not that she couldn’t sense his presence if she was looking for it, but she never got anything else from him, other than calm. “Not at all, please do.” She had to admit though, his attire, seeing him out of uniform, made her blink. She supposed that seeing her out of uniform had the same effect on her patients as well. “How are you today, Cmdr?”

KT sat in the furthest corner of the room watching the crew. She had a padd in her hand and a glass of water on the table. She didn’t need to drink, or indeed us the padd to take notes but she thought it might make her stand out less. Seeing the crew interact was fascinating the captain was right, if she wanted to learn abut organic emotion this was the place. Everyone was so relaxed and rank didn’t seem to be much of a factor. Of course on her home world her people had similar spots to interact and chat but they weren’t as comfortably or cosy as 12 forward. She could see why a place like this was so appreciated.

KT-QT (Engineer)

Sharah scanned the area, it made her look less distracted, by the noise. She saw who she thought was the new eng officer Tabris had mentioned, sitting alone. Catching the girl’s eye she smiled and made a waving motion to an empty chair at the table. It was a hard gesture for her. Sharah hated crowds, but she knew what it was like to be new and different, and how much a kind gesture meant.

Fayth

After Fayth’s motion, Tom captured the presence of the Counselor. “Commander.” He nodded and scooped onions in. Having a senior officer on the table wasn’t common to him. But everyone needed to eat regardless. For a second, he thought he was having breakfast. Considering different shifts, it wasn’t strange at all.
