Mika followed Sharah and listened as she explained the locks and locations of various items. She’d have to call it the medicine room, because that was what it was. Everything she could think of was organized neatly in the rooms, in various forms where applicable: pills, IV, hypospray compounds, etc. “I must’ve won some kind of lottery to get this position,” she said, smiling at Sharah again.

“It feels like it. Like I said earlier when the previous Viking was lost it was like command wanted to make up for something. So everything is just…over the top. It isn’t just medical. It’s all the departments. Okay,” she made their way back across the main area and around a corner to another door. The door opened to the three bed surgical suite. All bright, shinny, new, and barely used. Sharah could appreciate it, but surgery, though she was qualified, was not her best area of medical practice. More because of her condition than because she didn’t know what to do or how to do it.

“Losing a ship is a big deal. But I’m still surprised they went so far with the replacement,” she commented. Surgery wasn’t Mika’s specialty but she was qualified for it, and like Sharah had said, it was new and bright and looked barely used. It was high tech, with all the latest imaging machines that Sharah had mentioned before and bright lights to keep the surgical field well lit. Mika was, again, impressed.

“Giving the new boss a tour of the ship?” Semenza stood behind the two of them, grinning in a friendly way. He held out his hand to Mika. “Lieutenant Semenza. Your research lead.” Mika smiled and shook his hand, “Lieutenant Mika.”

Sharah turned and smiled a greeting. “Yes sir.” She liked working with Semenza. He might prefer research now to practice, but his goal was the same: to heal the sick and wounded. She also had a lot of respect for him after the issues with Hab’rabi and his crew. Which reminded her, Semenza probably had a lot to talk to Mika about, so Sharah excused herself, “I should probably get started before Nurse Hoffman yells at me.” Sharah exited the surgical suite knowing Mika would come get her as soon as she was done with her CMO duties. Sharah on the other hand had five patients that she needed to see and their charts. Not to mention the other day to day things being taken care of in the medical bay.

Mika and Semenza were talking for some time, Semenza handing over the tasks and things he’d been working on. He finished her tour of Sickbay and then they went back to the CMO office and were both behind the desk, using the computer. Then, they stood at the door to the office, talking.

Sharah went about her morning rounds. There were five patients who had been there during the night shift. Two needed more in depth physicals because their files didn’t arrive with their transfer. One had been kept for observation due to a gas exposure in the chem lab, the fourth had burned their hands and were doing rounds with the dermal regenerators. The last patient was going to be with them for awhile. She was pregnant and there were some complications due to the mixing of differing species genetics, but both mom and baby were fine and would be with some rest.

Then another officer walked in. Stehla K’tolvog, half human half Klingon, from security. She had a horrible rash that was a combination of welts and blisters crawling up her up her arm opposite side and up her neck toward her scalp. Where it had reached the base of her hair line the hair was falling out. She said it itched horribly but it hurt more to touch it. She had no histamine levels at all in her system, but did higher enzyme levels than normal. Sharah gave her something to ease the pain and itching. She sent a blood sample off to the lab. But no immediate answer were forth coming. She stepped away for a moment, “Lt Mika, you might want to come see this.”

Fayth, med

Mika was still talking to Semenza when Fayth came to find her. “What’s the problem?” She asked. She listened to Fayth’s explanation as they walked. Mika’s specialties included neither Klingons, nor dermatology, but she at least knew the basics. Then she stepped in to the patient’s room, “My name is Doctor Mika, can I take a look at the rash that’s been bothering you?”

The woman scowled and rolled her shoulders and seemed to be trying to pop her neck. “Please do, anything to get this rash to stop. It itches enough to make me want to rip my skin off but even my HAIR makes it hurt.”

Stehla K’tolvog

Mika stepped closer, inspecting the rash with a frown. Then she pulled out her tricorder and took scans. “It’s itchy and painful? Have you been in contact with anything out of the ordinary?” She knew the first scans said no histamines so most likely not an allergy, but it could still be an irritant of some kind.

Stehla nodded, “Yes and it’s driving me crazy. Especially between my brow ridges.” The rash was red and bluish-purple patches along the back of her neck and shoulders. But there were strange purple spots along the brow ridges and on her knuckles. But along her knuckles it might have been bruising from hand to hand or boxing training. Stehla thought about it for a moment. “No, I’ve been trying to remember, but everything has been pretty boring around her lately. And I’ve not eaten anything different. It all comes from the replicator.”

Stehla K’tolvog

“I’m going to take scans to see if there’s anything on your skin, and then if there isn’t, I’m going to take a few basic scans to see if anything in your body is causing them.” Mika explained, using her tricorder to do the scans.

~ Lt Mika, CMO

Stehla nodded her understanding. Scans showed there was nothing on her skin that would suggest a cause for the irritation. Basic scan would again show the elevated enzyme level. Results from the lab would be another hour to determine the type. Her weight was down almost 10 pounds from her last exam, her temperature was up 2 degrees from the average of her exams (this could be nothing since Klingons run hotter than humans but she was only half human, and scans of her core muscles showed some loss of density.

Stehla K’tolvog

Mika read the scans. There were no irritations, enzymes elevated and she’d have to wait to see which one or ones. She checked how long ago the previous exam was. “Have you been trying to lose weight recently?” Depending on the age of the previous exam and intent to lose weight, 10 pounds could be a considerable loss, especially with the loss of muscle density as well. She wasn’t too concerned about the temperature but noted it anyway, if it went up, it could indicate infection, or at least immune activity.
