“And provides an excellent alternative to the exact same things prepared the exact same way every meal.” said a uniquely accented voice over the din. The voice seemed to be a mixture of accents, all trying for superiority and reaching a state of equilibrium. But his words were clear and easily understandable. It came from a human male of average height and average build. Brown hair and brown eyes were the features of a wholly… well… average appearance. The man positively blended into the background save for one thing. He wore glasses. Actual glasses. He nodded to a chair at the table and set down a tray that held small dumplings, dark bread, some kind of herbal-aroma having sausage, and potatoes in a yellow sauce. He was dressed in civilian attire, blue jeans and a t-shirt under a dark brown leather jacket. “I hope you don’t mind, but seating is at a premium this evening.” and he smiled a warm smile and took a seat.

Sharah placed the voice immediately, she was familiar with it after all. Korczak was one of the few people who could probably sneak up on her. Not that she couldn’t sense his presence if she was looking for it, but she never got anything else from him, other than calm. “Not at all, please do.” She had to admit though, his attire, seeing him out of uniform, made her blink. She supposed that seeing her out of uniform had the same effect on her patients as well. “How are you today, Cmdr?”

KT sat in the furthest corner of the room watching the crew. She had a padd in her hand and a glass of water on the table. She didn’t need to drink, or indeed us the padd to take notes but she thought it might make her stand out less. Seeing the crew interact was fascinating the captain was right, if she wanted to learn abut organic emotion this was the place. Everyone was so relaxed and rank didn’t seem to be much of a factor. Of course on her home world her people had similar spots to interact and chat but they weren’t as comfortably or cosy as 12 forward. She could see why a place like this was so appreciated.

KT-QT (Engineer)

Sharah scanned the area, it made her look less distracted, by the noise. She saw who she thought was the new eng officer Tabris had mentioned, sitting alone. Catching the girl’s eye she smiled and made a waving motion to an empty chair at the table. It was a hard gesture for her. Sharah hated crowds, but she knew what it was like to be new and different, and how much a kind gesture meant.

Fayth

After Fayth’s motion, Tom captured the presence of the Counselor. “Commander.” He nodded and scooped onions in. Having a senior officer on the table wasn’t common to him. But everyone needed to eat regardless. For a second, he thought he was having breakfast. Considering different shifts, it wasn’t strange at all.

KT smiled and got up from her table, almost forgetting to pick up her water and the padd she had with her. She had hoped to interact with the crew but she didn’t expect it to be so suddenly. She reached the table and looked at the group “Lieutenant, commander, ensign” she said kindly as she took a seat next to Fayth’s but on her side opposite the other two officers.

KT-QT (Engineer)

Sharah smiled a welcome. There was always information going around a star ship about new crew, especially unique new crew. Sharah didn’t have to hear the thoughts of those around her to hear the gossip either. It was free flowing. Sharah however, despite many of the crew, had no issue with Synthetic life forms. In fact she’d served with one, Eve, on Ark Angel. She missed her, she’d been a good friend. “I’m Sharah, I work in medical. You’re the new exchange officer in engineering?”

Fayth, med

Little waved to the engineering officer while chewing crusty pizza. “(crunch) Tom and Little. (crunch) (crunch) Science.” He wasn’t familiar with her outfit, he thought perhaps she was off duty just like the Counselor.

Little, Sci

KT nodded at Tom “KT-QT Engineering” she said simply in greeting, she then then turned Fayth “Yes I was given the chance to join your crew as part of the programme, my queen thought me suitable and I’m excited to see where this goes.” she said simply. It was funny to think that a few months ago she was being briefed on the federation while escorting survivors back. Now she was part of a crew, even if it was just on a surface level.

Mike walked across the floor of 12 forward with the use of what seemed to be a sonar of some sort. As he walked his eyes and the rest of his senses seemed to be glued to the PaDD he was holding in front of him with his left hand. In his left he carried a steaming bowl of soup which left an aromatic aroma that seemed to spread behind him like a cloud. As he nearly missed colliding with one table his eyes shot upward to notice the group of officers. He smiled a bit of a shy smile and said simply, “Howdy Ya ‘all .”

Ensign Mike Jones Med

12 forward was quickly becoming full, and so was the table. The last time Sharah had sat at a table with this many people was her first night aboard the Challenger. Unless you counted senior staff meetings. She didn’t miss those. She had been forced to leave the gathering in a rush. She wondered what Korczak would say if she felt the need to do the same here? She saw Jones approach and the focus on whatever was on his PaDD. She knew all about being distracted. “Hello Jones. Have a seat, there’s room.”

Fayth, med

Mike looked quickly from his PaDD, to the table he had meant to sit at and to where Fayth sat inviting him to the crowded table . The one thing Mike hadn’t done since coming aboard was to socialize . As he recalled he wasn’t sure he had had a conversation with the Chief Medical Officer yet. He’d been going literally non-stop since he cam aboard. He smiled broadly at Fayth and said ,”Don’t mind if I do ma’am. ” he said in a cheery voice . “I know I’ve seen you running back and forth in sickbay but I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced yet.”

Sharah was prevented from shaking hands by the fact Jones was across the table from her. It was a very human custom though to shake hands upon meeting someone. One that Sharah had learned to expect to participate in once she’d joined the Academy. “Introduction by Nurse Hoffman yelling orders across sickbay seems to have been the norm for all of us newer medical officers. Sickbay has been rather busy. I’m Sharah Fayth.”

Mike set the bowl of soup down on the table which made the spoon in the bowl clank. He turned the PaDD off and placed it in a holster and then spoke as he sat down, “Hello I’m Mike Jones a poor Ensign adrift in the depths of space with no idea what’s going on yet.” He smiled warmly as he asked,”And you are Doctor?”

Ensign Mike Jones med.

Sheridan looked about as three more people joined the table. It had already been a little full to begin with but now it was turning into a small party. Not that she could blame anyone. The atmosphere, at least, was welcoming. Ever since working on the Odin, she hadn’t really had the feel of a tight-knit crew. The Viking seemed to be different. Though she could tell that Fayth was on edge.

Miranda scooted over to make room for KT-QT as she had sat next to Sharah. “Mister Jones,” she said, offering her hand to Mike. “Lieutenant Miranda Sheridan. I may not know what’s going on, but at least I can tell us where we’re going.” She flashed a bright smile that lit up her face and made the corners of her eyes crinkle just a bit.

Lt Sheridan, Sci

Mike wiggled back and forth on his chair for an instant as he settled in with his bowl of soup for an instant and then smiled in Miranda’s direction. This was a sheer joy for Mike. The only people he’d seen since coming on board were all in dire need of medical assistance or were the people bring the needy people in and demanding that he repair something which no one knew anything about . It had been a rough way to start his new career in star fleet.

Mike took the Lieutenants hand and shook it gently as he spoke saying, “Well ma’am no need to call me Mister for one thing but I am glad to meet you. I’ve always wanted to meet someone with my grandmothers’ precognitive abilities. Every time she would catch me stealing cookies, she would always tell me where I would soon be going.”

Ensign Mike Jones med.

Sharah grinned. Her grandmother had been much the same. She always seemed to know what Sharah and Andrew were about to get up to, and she always had this sneaking suspicion it had nothing to do with being telepathic. She was about to ask if all grandmothers, despite species, were like that, but was paused by Sheridan’s reply.

Miranda broke into a white smile. “Oh no, it’s nothing like that. I’m just one of our stellar cartographics and astrophysics specialists. At least those are my majors. So I can figure out where we our and what we’re pointed at,” she said with a shrug. “Or at least help keep us from running into stuff. But if we do, we’ve got a great medical team to patch us up,” she said, giving him and Sharah a smile.

Lt Sheridan, Sci

“And an engineering team to fix the scuffs and the bumps on the hull” KT chimed in trying to join the conversation. Socializing with organics was not her strong point.

KT-QT (Engineer)

Sharah was twirling a curl absently and she seemed as if her thoughts were elsewhere for a moment. Her attention returned as she felt focus on her and she glanced up and returned Miranda’s smile. Reminding herself to accept the compliment. She wasn’t very comfortable with them. Though that had nothing to do with Star Fleet or the officers she served with. “Well the rest of us that can’t tell an isolinear chip from a chipped off piece of bulkhead are eternally grateful for the engineers that keep the ship in one piece. And the scientist who always seem to figure out and understand what cosmic boo-boo we’ve run into.”

Mike had had a spoonful of his three sisters’ soup halfway to his mouth when Miranda spoke. He began laughing at her reply and had to place the spoon back into the soup before he spilled it. He waited for a moment then calming himself before speaking. “Well, I can see right now that I can relax a bit. We have people who can keep us from running into things. It sounds like the sort of job that they should give out special perks for!”

His smile remained on his face for a bit. He liked the Lieutenant. And when KT-Qt spoke his smile grew wider yet again as he said, “Well then that does it for me. Between people who know where we’re going and people to patch things, I can see I shall be as lazy as a black bear in a honey factory.”

Ensign Mikke Jones Med.

“I wouldn’t say a factory was a good place to relax.” KT said a knowing and haunted tone in her voice. The joke had obviously gone right over her head.

Jones had some interesting ways of saying things, and his sense of humor was catching. It would make working in sickbay interesting and lively. Sharah wasn’t great at making conversation, because in very busy situations like this sometimes she accidently spoke to a stray thought rather than the spoken conversation. But she did remember the last time she’d run into Sheridan so she turned slightly to the science officer, “Did you ever figure out what was causing the trouble with the navigational data?”

Fayth, med

The Viking? Well I wish you a good luck!

The crowded table somehow brought a memory from Tom’s ship night. Class of 97 was full of stories. He started to wonder what kind of reunion he might have later on. The staffs he had, the cadets he was privileged to serve with, those who couldn’t make it, and instructors… He then started to scan everyone around him at present. It looks like the Personal Department did a great job diversifying talents and skills. And the Captain, of course. He thought, with a mental giggle in his heart.

“It was some sort of weird gravimetric distortion, like a standing gravity wave. It was like a black hole or something, but weren’t able to detect any mass or Hawking radiation from it. We marked it’s position. Markus wants to study it some more. Seems to think it might be some kind of dark matter version.” She shrugged. “It’s fascinating but the whole thing bothers me. It’s like a cosmic filament or something.

Sheridan, Sci

(bumping for others in the thread, to put back on the board)

KT listened to the other talk and smiled “No matter how advanced we are space always finds a way to surprise us” she said thoughtfully “I guess that’s why almost every race is drawn to it” she added.
