As soon as he was done taping the door, Aaron hauled out a bucket of tribbles, and set them up on a long table, with small, wide-mouthed cups of synthehol on one end, and began to toss tribbles at the cups. “Who wants to play tribble dunking?!”

“After you, Dum” Dee said smoothly to the shambling mound of brown paste and and peanuts to its side.

“Oh no,” rumbled Dum back, “you first - age before beauty.”

The new co Chief Engineers of the USS Constellations were recent additions to the ship. They were from the planet of Cal-E and they were permitted to enter the Academy after it was shown they were sentient and that they went together like tomato and grilled cheese. Once they were assigned two different ships. But when both become non-responsive while separated by great distance, they were quickly brought back together and they resumed their services to the Federation.

They were a pair of blobs that were siblings of a sort and lovers of a sort. Like all siblings, they did fight from time to time, but their fighting consisted of words and not physicality because when they bumped into each other they became stuck, and it took a lot of effort by medical staff to ensure the bits of Dum were one of the blobs and the bits of Dee were the other blob. The consistency of jello and the consistency of peanut butter were vastly different, after all and they found it rude and more than a bit embarrassing to get caught up with their sibling.

“If you insist,” both said in unison and fitted through the door side by side, with their respective blobs not touching the other blob.

“Clearly you have gone on a diet,” Dee said to its fellow.

“Are you saying I was fat?” Dum asked.

“Well, yes, how did you slim down? Stopped adding salt and sugar?” Dee asked.

“No, you know very well that I contain 25% less salt than other anthropomorphic peanut butter, and I’m now neither oily or dry,” Dum said.

“Oh I noticed you no longer left a trail behind you as you oozed along.” Dee complimented the other blob.

“Why thanks, I figured the ensigns needed a break from clearing up after me, us peanut butter Tweedkes are considerate like that,” Dum admitted.

The two anthropomorphic blobs began to dance. Dum was rather short and wide, while Dee was slender (for a blob) and tall. As they danced, the peanuts in Dum and the fruit bits in Dee could be seen gyrating along with their gelatinous pastes.

Byr didn’t recognize the newcomers, as he hadn’t seen them down on the surface. He was also not as familiar with their race but reminded him in a strange way of the Binars, if not as harmonious, even if their dance betrayed the rivalry he saw at the door. He just hoped he wasn’t going to be put on the cleanup crew afterwards.

As the Tweedles danced, their movements became more and more frantic and they weaved and flowed around each other. It seemed to take a bigger toll on Dum than on Dee, as the opaque blob stopped dancing and made its way towards Byr.

“Hello,” rumbled Dum to Byr, “do you dance, friend?”

“Not really,” Byr replied nervously, his antennae standing straigt up in response. “I don’t believe we’ve yet to be introduced, I’m Ensign Byrnaterro, Chief Science Officer, recently,” he added having only just received the promotion right before the party in the captain’s ready room.

Were she not the XO, Valentina probably wouldn’t have bothered coming to the gathering. But she had learned that while ‘rank had its privilages, it also had its drawbacks. It meant she was required to attend formal and informal functions more than had she merely been a Junior Officer or even a Department head.

Stepping into the room, she glanced around at the mix of personnel that the Connie offered. Most of the races they Federation was in league with, were represented on the ship. And even in this small grouping, most of those were presented here as well. Her eyes scanned the room as she looked for the Captain.
