Security had been one of the first places on her list of rounds now that things had settled down and they were back to regular operating procedures. She had briefly seen the Security Chief during the debriefing after their kidnapping and rescue of the ship. But she hadn’t truly had a chance to meet him.

Stepping into security, she looked around. It was one of the places they had swept for intruders once she and the two security NEs had figured out what was happening. As they ship had been secured, she had found two intruders in here trying to hack their way into the armory and computers to get at the weapons and weapon control systems. Thankfully, they had been kept on lock down and the intruders had been stunned and rounded up before any long term damage could be done.

She nodded and smiled to the NE at the main counter as she walked in. “I’m looking for the Chief. Is he around?” Her dark hair was up in a regulation knot on the back of her head and her uniform was pressed and a bit more tidy than usual. She had woken up this morning with a desire to make a good impression on those she met. And as she looked at the NEs reaction to her, she wondered if a non uniform approach would have been less intimidating.

Lt. Burcham’s door was open. He heard the XO talking the NE outside, he came to the door. “Thank you, NE Peters, and welcome Commander Bellini, my office is right over here, would you care for a drink or anything?” Lt. Burcham asked her, curious why she was visiting, and hoping he wasn’t already in trouble.

Valentina smiled. “Thank you, Lieutenant. A fruit juice would be lovely if not any trouble.” She moved in and looked around. “Nice to be able to see everyone in here. Last I was in here, it was all invisible aliens and pain and trouble. So glad to see things back to normal. You getting everyone settled back in all right?” She moved to a chair across the desk from his own chair and settled in, looking a bit more relaxed than most officers in such surroundings.

Lt. Burcham grabbed two cups from a table and opened a fridge under it, pulling out a bottle of fruit juice he made by replicating the fruits and hand squeezing the liquid from them himself. Somehow, he prefered it that way than the replicator’s fruit juice. He poured the liquid into both cups, put the bottle back in the fridge and placed one cup in front of the XO, and one cup in front of his chair and then sat down. “Yes, Ma’am. We are getting everything back to normal and adding extra protocols throughout the ship to make sure those things don’t come back, or that they are fully gone from the ship.” He responded.

Valentina didn’t hide the look of impressive shock on her face to see a pitcher of fresh juice come from a chiller under the counter. “Impressive. I think I may have to come around a bit more often.” She laughed and nodded in appreciation at the drink. “And please, Bellini or Valentina unless we are on the bridge or in an official capacity. We are family when we are out here.” She took a sip of the drink and smiled a bit brighter. “You’ll have to give me the recipe or make sure you don’t mind me coming in here to grab a cup now and then.” She laughed and leaned back a bit in her seat. “I am glad everything is getting back to normal. The debriefing isn’t exactly the right place for introductions. And I also wanted to schedule a time we could discuss further security measures for such a boarding again. We also need to get together to write up a report of what happened, beyond what’s already on file, along with the security upgrades to send on so other ships can hopefully avoid what happened to us,” she nodded to him with an added tip of her glass, “Especially to you all. I know I didn’t get the worst of it, by any means.”

She had checked in while they were being tortured and hadn’t had to go thru what they had. It was a bit like survivor’s guilt. She felt bad she had come along just in time not to be taken. But she knew, also, that deep inside, that if she had been taken with them, they might not be free and having the conversation she was having now.

“You are welcome to come in anytime you wish, Valentina. I don’t mind.” He started. “Yes, we definitely need better protocols to make sure something like that happens again, some of which my team has already started making small changes to that we can implement throughout the ship immediately. I joined in the middle of everything going on, I was lucky you were on the bridge and knew what was going on. You are new here as well, how do you like the ship so far? I am learning how to navigate it pretty quickly.” He took a sip of his juice after he spoke.

She relaxed and sipped her juice as she relaxed, grateful he accepted her casual meeting instead of staying to protocol stiff around her. “I’m doing pretty good. A crash course in getting around out of necessity helped as well.” She laughed. “Wow, this juice is pretty good. Definitely gonna come here more often. But yeah, getting along pretty well. I have blood, skin and uniform samples in the Science lab if that could be of any help to your security measures. I am wanting Engineering, Security and Science to work together to come up with ideas for securing the ship against intruders like this again. Them being invisible, and ruthless, was a near deadly combination. I can’t imagine what you all went thru, but know I am here for anyone who wants to talk to someone other than the counselor.”

She laughed shaking her head, “Doesn’t mean I won’t send them to the counselor afterwards. But sometimes it’s easier to get it out the first time with someone else.”

“Totally understand that, it helps gather your thoughts together, without the official starfleet officer looming over what you say and you find yourself in over your head in hot water because of what they wrote in the counselor’s official report. I’ve seen that happen. An ensign aboard a ship I served told the counselor about a mission and how it didn’t go down by the book, why it didn’t and how it wasn’t his fault, it was because of the circumstances of the second contact, he was stripped of his rank, and basically fired from starfleet.” He said and then took a sip of his juice. “I’ve been thinking there may be a way, or if we could create a way to integrate the systems ability to scan our dna for access to a doorway, that we can use the dna from the samples to create a blacklist. Like, it should already be able to stop someone who doesn’t have clearance to come through the door, invisible or not, but if the dna is on the blacklist, it sends a ship wide alarm and somehow subdues the person or thing.” He suggested.
