The Constellation has come to a stop to collect the new counselor as a shuttle approached. Little was known about Lt. Commander O’Dell except that he had just finished command school and was a licensed Counselor. The shuttle came closer to the ship and sent a message:

“USS Constellation, this is shuttle Lionheart requesting permission to dock with one passenger.”

Lt. Commander O’Dell, CNS

=^=Lionheart,=^= came the voice of a young lady, =^= you are cleared for docking, please reduce speed and let the auto system bring you in.=^=

=^= Roger that Constellation=^= came the reply from the shuttle commander.

Upon arriving in the bay, the shuttle would be met with the usual crew of folks to look it over and make sure all was well for it to leave once more. Small bags of goodies were placed on the shuttle seats for anyone who would occupy them and a pair of special bags were available for the pilot and co pilot seats. Such bags contained balloons, candy, confetti and no small amount of glitter. All of it loose and easily accessible, of course.

Also meeting the new CNS was the XO. Valentina has eyes like blue diamonds and hair like fresh mined coal. Her smile was sincere and her uniform was inspection ready. She stood, hands clasped before her, near the bay door as the shuttle opened to deposit goods and folks. She knew what Jeremy looked like, from his file and smiled a bit broader as he disembarked.

Lt. Commander O’Dell walked off the shuttle after docking. He was not what anyone could have possibly expected. The Commander wore a standard uniform, but his communication badge reflected a different Starfleet…indeed an empire…one that did not exist in this universe. His rank insignia was also different than most other officers and, to top all of that off, O’Dell had a knife sticking out of a holster on his uniform. If information was correct, he never went anywhere without his knife. To O’Dell, the threat of a stab in the back never went away with his crossing over from the mirror universe. Try as Starfleet had, O’Dell never felt relatively safe, and he was quick on the draw. Still, there was hope for him; otherwise, he would not be in Starfleet.

Walking up to the Commander, he said,

“Hello, I am Lt. Commander Jeremy O’Dell, and I am reporting for duty.”

With that, he handed over a Padd and waited for a response.

Valentina watched the man and smiled. He certainly wasn’t anything like she expected. But that was a good thing. Cookie cutter style officers wouldn’t fit on a ship like the Constellation. To be honest, sometimes the XO, herself, wondered if she fit here. “Well, hello to you as well,” she smiled and took the PaDD to keep the man from hovering. “I’m Valentina Bellini, your new XO. You’re welcome to call me Valentina when we aren’t in an official capacity. Welcome to the Connie. I hope you have a strong spine and fair sense of humor. Those seem to be two things the Federation doesn’t provide that this ship has strong need of in a crewman.” She nodded and motioned towards the door. “I figured I’d help you find your quarters before you start your check in process. How was the flight?”

She moved towards the doors and waited as they whooshed open to see if the new Counselor was going to follow or just stand in the bay wondering what was happening.

Following the Commander he replied,

“The flight was long but I am glad we made it. After spending so much time at HQ on Earth, it has been nice to get away. I think my colorful past will fit right in with the crew here. I can only assume that is why I was given this assignment.”

“Colorful like crayons,” she quipped as they headed for the lift. “It seems this is one of the most eclectic crews I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. And you will certainly have your work cut out for you. From our Engineering Chief pair, brothers I believe, to our Chief of Pets. I have to admit there are stations and duties here that don’t fit on any other ship. But somehow,” Valentina glanced at the man with a slightly odd look on her face, “they seem perfectly normal here.” She shook her head trying to reconcile normal with anything that related to the Constellation.

“I will admit, it will probably be me in your office more times than not. I find I don’t quite have the genetic makeup to be as, well, as artistically chaotic and spontaneously gigglesome as most on the ship. If that makes any sense. I find myself, more often than not, being a voice of reason. Which, in and of itself, is also a strange thing here.” She nodded to the lift and glanced at him. “And I warn you, everything from glitter to whoopie cushions abound here. So always watch yourself going thru doorways, or opening mail of any kind.” She laughed lightly as she palmed the lift then stepped out of the way in case anything came barreling out at them.
