Andromeda sat down with a sigh as the door to her office slid closed. She’d been organizing schedules all-day, and she was finally on to the last item on her list: mandatory physicals. “If I have to chase each and every one of them down, I swear I’ll…” Her sentence trailed off into irritated muttering as she drafted a full crew message. “Report to sickbay for your mandatory physical within the next three weeks.” She read aloud. “Perfect. If I have to hunt them down after that it’s their own fault.” She sent the message out, pausing for a moment to add her signature.

Dum and Dee made their way into Sickbay for their mandated and requested boarding physicals. They looked around sickbay and made sure they were out of the way of the main thoroughfare in sickbay.

They didn’t think that it was necessary for them to announce who they were as they knew there were no other amorphous blobs on the Constellation and very few, if any, others in Starfleet.

Andromeda looked up when she heard a knock on her office door, quickly followed by a nurse announcing the first patients had arrived. She stood up with a grin and walked past the nurse to where the siblings were. “Hi. I’m Doctor Andromeda DeLion. Nice to meet you both. I assume you’re here for physicals?” She’d leave how to address her in their hands. People tended to default to what they were comfortable with after all.

“We are, Doctor,” Dee said and began removing its uniform.

“Have you run physicals on blobs before, Doctor?” asked Dum, following the example of its fellow blob.

Both had started on their tops and were now undoing the clothing that was covering the lower part of their bodies.

Andromeda grinned. “Never in my life. I have some notes from the former CMO, but this is a new life experience for me.” She waved towards the biobeds. “They aren’t very complete notes either, so y’all get to tell me what to do here.” She was a firm believer that no one knew a body better than the person to whom it belonged.

“Well,” Dee said, looking at the biobeds, “one thing, we can’t use the biobeds, no more than we can use chairs, stools or other furniture used by unipedal, bipedal, tripedal, quadedal or life forms with more apendages that allow them to move around by walking rather than by flowing along the ground. It made our quarters very easy to prepare for our needs … we are just in need of mats on the ground and a bench to stand up to for our meals and work.”

Dum rumbled, “we rarely attend formal occasions of the crews of which we are members, not because we are anti social, but because we know our lack of the appropriate table ‘etiquette’ that comes normally to non blobs is foreign to us and we are unable to use the cutlery and crockery used by non-blobs. Not only that, but when we consume the nutrients of foods, our biochemical and biological processes are off putting to other species, and in an event in the academy as cadets, we inadvertently caused great offence to the Klingon, Cardassian and Ferengi personnel we were dining with. It was the result of the smells and noises we made. We tried to lessen them when it became apparent it was us that was causing the problems for all the parties involved, but eventually had to leave, and dine alone for the good of the mission and our relations with the other species.”

“Of course, with me, part of the issue is that they could see the biological and biochemical processes underway as well as hearing and smelling them,” Dee explained, “Dum as you can see is opaque, where as I am translucent. Amongst the blobs, seeing the processes underway don’t cause issues, but we do understand that other species can find it … uncomfortable to observe and we try to be accommodating to their needs and the good of our crewmates. We tend to consume our food while we are in our quarters and make sure we go out among our crew with these specially modified uniforms for us that make sure we are able to not cause too much uncomfortable feelings for others.”

Andromeda nodded. “Well, you’re always welcome to come to eat with my staff. If they can’t handle it, they aren’t very good Doctors.” After all, her staff dealt with all sorts of bodily fluids and body parts. They should be able to deal with the digestive process. “Although some of them may be very curious.”

“We too are very curious,” Dee told Andromeda, “but this is the first time that anyone has suggested such a thing. This might be a break through in blob-non blob relationships. Much like the realisation that came when Starfleet officers first realised that there was sentient life on our homeworld, much like Captain Kirk, Mr Spock and Doctor McCoy did when they assisted the Horta. I suspect Doctor that your simple act of kindness to a pair of blobs of no fixed gender assignment will be looked upon in the future as a key moment. I see a future when living artworks are made to honour you.”

Andromeda laughed at the reference to McCoy. “I hardly think sharing a lunch table is worth that.”

Dum added in conclusion, “so, Doctor, we hope you understand that we can’t physically get into your biobeds without a lot of pain to and difficulty for our composition and forms to conform to the biobeds. Unless they can be lowered to the floor, of course.”

Dee also said, “please understand, Doctor, we are not being difficult and if we were able to use the biobeds within their current parameters, we would do so. If you can do your scans of us without us needing to force ourselves up there, we would be most appreciative.”

Andromeda tilted her head slightly then tapped out a quick note on the pad she was carrying. “I don’t suppose you could make the height of the biobeds adjustable, could you?” One of the banes of her existence was having to stand on something to be at the proper height for the biobeds. “I’m always too short for them, the blasted things are made for Vulcans or something!” She turned without giving them a chance to reply and caught a nurse, asking him to grab her a scanner. The scanners were, unfortunately, also too high for her to reach.

“I will get a team onto it for you, Doctor,” rumbled Dum, “I don’t see why such a thing wouldn’t be possible. These notes have our ideal compositions on them - our nutritional information if you like - based on how well we are going against the norm calculates our expiry dates. Remember Kraft, Dee?”

“Of course, that blob was never oily nor dry and so easy to spread, until the day came when Kraft spread itself out too thinly and losts its cohesiveness,” Dee replied to its sibling.

“And was replaced by Bega. Bega seemed to be keen to experiment, and trialled different nuts as well as adding some oil and rock salts.” Dum rumbled.

“It lost its focus from what I recall and before long became multiple Begas,” Dee answered.

“We don’t talk about that though, do we? I prefer to remember Bega when it was so easy to spread. It went everywhere and knew its purpose. It was, like me, a peanut butter blob, Doctor,” Dum rumbled once again.

Anyway, the report showed that Dum’s makeup was in the acceptable range for a blob of its type and all the usual ingredients of peanut butter were present. Potassium was slightly lower than optimal, while its vitamin E was higher than normal, but once again, it was within ranges and nothing to be concerned about. It also showed trace amounts of soy to be in Dum’s system. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_butter#Nutritional_profile) for the nutritional profile of peanut butter, smooth, not crunchy, but yeah. The details showed that Dum had an expiry date of early 2399.

Sadly, the news was not as good for Dee, but that will have to wait until after work for the writer.

  • Dum and Dee Tribble

“Dum, you appear to be within normal parameters. My only advice is to eat more potassium.” Andromeda turned to scan Dee, appearing completely at ease with the blob that was taller than she was.
