Matty stepped back onto the Europa for the first time in almost six months. She had her bags transported to her quarters. She knew the ship in and out. Her first stop was Dvorak’s office to report for duty and then the rest of the mundane checkins that needed to be done. Stepping onto the Bridge, she paused for a moment and took in the activity and then walked purposefully to the ready room door and rang the chime.

“Come in,” came the Captain’s voice from behind the door.

“Oh, hey,” Johann said very informally as he saw the familiar figure walk through the door. “Welcome back to the Europa. Feel free to have a seat.” He seemed actually rather happy to see Matty again, even though he never was casual enough with her to actually call her ‘Matty’.

“I didn’t think we’d be so lucky as to get you back. Then again now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t remember how it was that you weren’t here in the first place…”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Matty laughed “Well, I took a leave of absence to deal with family stuff, did a little bit of teaching at the Academy on Bajor and specifically requested to return to the Europa if your Chief Engineer’s spot was open…It was so here I am.” She said “That’s the story in a nut shell. So…Lt. Cmdr Madison Sullivan reporting for duty Captain. Here are my transfer papers.” She said handing over a Padd “Anything I should know about before I go down to main engineering?” She asked

Dvorak took the PADD and simply added it to one of the piles on his desk. There was no need for him to review its contents; he knew enough about Sullivan already to avoid that particular part of this ritual.

“Actually, yes, there’s something you should look into,” he started to say. “I mean, besides the current business we’re in right now with the attempted cyber attack. That would be your number one priority.” Since Sullivan had just come over while they were at Starbase 51, that was obviously a situation that needed to be resolved first.

“While you were gone, we had a small mission around the planet Grazer. During that, some intruders came aboard and reprogrammed some of the replicators to generate living creatures. This isn’t supposed to be possible, but it happened. If you can spare some cycles and figure out how that happened, it might be useful. We wouldn’t any more incidents like that happening. And who knows, maybe our understanding of modern replicator technology is wrong,” Johann said. “I mean, I never understood why they always said the replicator can’t create living things when it can clearly create nearly anything, and I was supposed to be a quantum physicist.”

“Anyway, that’s a low priority,” he reiterated a moment later after seeming to ponder the situation for another minute.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Matty looked at Johann as if he had lost his mind “I’ll look into it.” She said “The cyber attack, was it a generalized attack or targeted to specific systems? And do we know who perpetrated it?” She asked “It could be that there are issues that are still present that could cause trouble later.” She said
