“That’s a good question,” Johann said. “We’re going to give you a variety of stuff to figure out what it is you’re good at, and for you to figure out what you might like doing. I’m pretty sure every major department can find something for you to do.”

Jerrin nodded slowly, though rather than him seeming disinterested, he seemed to be taking in what Johann was saying.

“I mean, if you have something you want to try, we can start with that. The requirements are that it’s not something we’re making you do against your will, and your mother approves of whatever it is.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

“Nothing specific comes to mind just now, though there are some engineering things that are interesting,” the teen said before glancing at this mother. What limits would she put on this?”

Vora just shook her head. “So long as it’s within basic Starfleet rules I’m fine with it. I trust everyone here not to toss stuff at you designed to make you fail, and yet they will challenge you. It won’t be easy, and some days might be hard. The only thing I would be cautious about is away missions. I’m fine with it so long as you know the protocols inside and out. Someone will undoubtedly test you on them to be sure.” Away teams were where things could get dangerous, but she wanted him to have the freedom he really did need.

Away missions? Johann thought. We’re just giving the kid a job, not a red shirt… or uh… a gold shirt…

“I’ll note that, though I doubt we’ll be beaming Jerrin down anywhere unless it’s a port call,” he said politely to Vora.

Her gaze shifted to Johann and Vora knew the message behind his tone and yet, she had no issues holding her gaze strongly. Part of the problem seemed to be people underestimating Jerrin’s capabilities, including her. Just because he wasn’t ready to do some work off the ship at some point, didn’t mean he’d never be. She just wanted her expectations known way in advance.

“I’ll also talk to Miss Sullivan and see what she can have you do in Engineering,” he now said to Jerrin.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Jerrin nodded. “Okay,” he said simply.

“Alright then. You’ll get a message with when and where to report later this week. If you both don’t have anything else for me, you’re both dismissed.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Vora nodded and rose, gesturing to the door. “Go on ahead. I think you have a tutoring session in an hour, yes?”

Jerrin nodded. “Yeah. Ensign Richards. We’re starting the next bit on gravimetrics.”

“Okay, I’ll see you after then. I just need to talk to the Captain a moment.,” she told her son.

“Okay,” Jarrin said simply. He gave a nod to Johann and slipped out of the office.

Vora waited till the door was closed and then sat back down again. She wore a pensive expression as she rubbed the tips of her fingers together for a moment. “There’s one thing you should be aware of when you concoct whatever plan you have going. Cassidy spoke to me earlier and apparently when her and Commander Range were dealing with the whole incident Jerrin gave several hints that he probably has a crush on her. She’s pretty sure she knows how she’ll handle it, but just a heads up that my adolescent son is also dealing with that side of growing up and when the people around him are mostly quite a bit older than him it presents… some potential issues.”
