Matty continued working through the problem on the Padd looking for additional possibilities to fix it. She finally just pushed the PaDD away and looked up sensing the XO’s worry “I’ll get it worked out commander. I may have to take a sledgehammer to the stupid thing, but it will get fixed.” She said “It is just going to take some creativity.”

CE

“‘Stupid thing?’,” the Captain asked, not realizing what the two of them were talking about.

Where’s Marsh and Drake? he wondered. It felt like this briefing was taking weeks, and it hadn’t even started yet.

Avik’s eyebrow raised in question at the notion of taking a sledgehammer to it. She felt that was a little extreme for the matter, but didn’t share her thoughts.

“I believe it’s best you explain to the CO about the issue. It will pass the time until the others arrive,” she informed the Chief Engineer.

While she waited for Matty to fill in the CO, her eyes slid to the clock to note the time. Her irritation rose. The other department heads were cutting it close and she hoped they had a good excuse. It was important all senior officers were punctual. She made a small note in her PADD over it.

With a slight frown, Cassidy stepped into the room, a PADD in one hand that she was tapping against her thigh. She took a seat as she mulled over the oddities as of late. If she was aware she was cutting it close, Abrams made no comment about it.

A seemingly annoyed Zeke eventually arrived. He had a few PADDs in one hand. In the other he held a still steaming cup of coffee. He nodded to people there as he made his way to his chair.

CMO

Avik’s expression remained an indifferent mask when she finally noticed the COS and CMO arrive, respectively in that order. It appeared they were puzzled over something. She suspected it had something to do with their current mission but she decided to let the CO take the lead on filling everyone in. With a brief swipe across her PADD, she already had her organized folder on hand and ready to go.

Her eyes looked toward Dvorak.

“Let’s just get on with it…” the Captain muttered as he stood up and pressed a button on the wall, which made the monitor display Europa’s position in space. Starbase 51 was off in a corner. A group of stars was located in the other corner and highlighted.

“What you’re all aware of is that our assignment is to explore star cluster Alpha 9-9-2, located here. Starfleet Command has reason to believe that there is at least one M-class planet in this region that may be home to a spacefaring civilization of arachnid-humanoids. Members of this species have been arriving at Starbase 51 for the better part of this part year.”

“What you do not know, and what Commander Avik and I were not permitted to tell you all prior to this briefing, is that there is the possibility of a second alien civilization in this region as well, and it may be extremely hostile. The are unconfirmed reports of fleets with over 2000 ships attacking other species’ space stations in this region, seemingly out of thin air. We know very little about them, other than that they are described as ‘snake-like’ in appearance. Unfortunately, our one source of information that was able to speak in detail was a refugee who was murdered in their quarters on Starbase 51 right before we arrived. Starbase personnel have been unable to solve the murder. Admiral McGinnis suspects there may be a security leak at the station.”

“Our orders are to, in addition to our exploration assignment, to locate and assess the threat posed by this snake-like race, and report findings back to the Admiral directly over a coded subspace channel.” Dvorak made the point of not actually saying which channel it was.

“The Admiral provided us with a classified intelligence report before we left Starbase 51. It doesn’t tell us very much, but Commamder Avik has been reviewing its contents and has done some preliminary research. Miss Avik?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO
