“Let’s just get on with it…” the Captain muttered as he stood up and pressed a button on the wall, which made the monitor display Europa’s position in space. Starbase 51 was off in a corner. A group of stars was located in the other corner and highlighted.

“What you’re all aware of is that our assignment is to explore star cluster Alpha 9-9-2, located here. Starfleet Command has reason to believe that there is at least one M-class planet in this region that may be home to a spacefaring civilization of arachnid-humanoids. Members of this species have been arriving at Starbase 51 for the better part of this part year.”

“What you do not know, and what Commander Avik and I were not permitted to tell you all prior to this briefing, is that there is the possibility of a second alien civilization in this region as well, and it may be extremely hostile. The are unconfirmed reports of fleets with over 2000 ships attacking other species’ space stations in this region, seemingly out of thin air. We know very little about them, other than that they are described as ‘snake-like’ in appearance. Unfortunately, our one source of information that was able to speak in detail was a refugee who was murdered in their quarters on Starbase 51 right before we arrived. Starbase personnel have been unable to solve the murder. Admiral McGinnis suspects there may be a security leak at the station.”

“Our orders are to, in addition to our exploration assignment, to locate and assess the threat posed by this snake-like race, and report findings back to the Admiral directly over a coded subspace channel.” Dvorak made the point of not actually saying which channel it was.

“The Admiral provided us with a classified intelligence report before we left Starbase 51. It doesn’t tell us very much, but Commamder Avik has been reviewing its contents and has done some preliminary research. Miss Avik?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Taking the cue from the CO, Avik ordered the computer to pull her information on the screen. The current crew could easily bring them up on their own PADD to read at their own pace or review when needed. She had made a summary of the classified files to prevent the actual ones being displayed. It repeated exactly what Dvorak stated with additional information.

There were notes over strange occurrences on the station including dates, those involved, and more. Most of the interviewed individuals from the attacks spoke about myths and fictional stories about snakes. This led to research over Elimites and the similarities between the events.

“I figured we might as well start with any notable strange events that have occurred on board after le”aving the station,” Avik stated to receive reports from the department heads.

Matty listened intently “So no security feeds on the quarters that would shed light on what happened?” She asked slightly surprised “If there is a security leak on the station, it could be that they know what our mission is and the issues that we are currently having aboard the Europa could be related to that.” She suggested with a sigh

“They might also be unrelated circumstances,” Zeke said. “One thing’s for sure. We’re going to need to stock up on plenty of anti-venom. Yuck.”

Cassidy waved the hand she held in her fingers and sighed slightly. “I think we might already be farther into this than we suspected,” she said, sliding the PADD with her suddenly expanded case load across the table to Dvorak. “Several incidents of missing personal items or… pets. All seemingly random, but all have suddenly cropped up since we left base. This is course after we had the breach in the system. We’re investigating each thing and it could simply be coincidence, but I’m not ruling anything out just yet.”

“The security feed gives little to no information over what happened. I suspect it malfunctioned at the moment of the murder as shows no one entering or leaving. The Security stationed at the room also were interviewed and reported the same,” Avik pointed out to Matty, noting she went over it with keen eyes and asked questions about it.

She then added, “We were assured that no one is aware. According to records, we’re simply exploring uncharted territory out here. I didn’t detect any lies in his words so I have no logical reason to doubt his word.”

Noting the CMO’s mention of anti-venom, her attention turned to him.

“Could you elaborate on that statement? Is there a venomous creature on the loose in the ship?” Avik decided to addressed Drake’s statement while Dvorak looked over Abram’s PADD report.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“When dealing with an unknown, alien race that is descendent from spiders, and another, more hostile race from snakes? Experience has taught me to be prepared, Commander.” Zeke replied.
.
“It will be easy enough to get expanded stocks of anti-venom prior to arriving on site. A generic version, and, perhaps, some quantities of more specific types if we had more information on the biology of the aliens.”
