“Unknown,” was the very unhelpful reply. But then again, most of the computer systems were still inoperable.

“Hmm,” Marsh couldn’t help but be disappointed. However that was still information. It indicated that the self-destruct was terminated by a means that was not typical.

Cassidy looked over her shoulder. “I’m going to step off of the bridge and check out the situation in the adjacent corridors. I won’t go far, but Europa, track my movements. I’ve got a tricorder, but let me know if you pick up anything unusual.”

=/\= Acknowledged, =/\= came the Captain’s voice over her communicator.

“You coming with or did you want to try to get more data out of the computer?” she asked Marsh.

Abrams, COS

“I’ll set up an uplink to the Europa. Then we can study the information at our leisure.” He looked at her. They were here for a while already and hadn’t been attacked so it was unlikely that there was anything on the ship that continued to be intentionally dangerous. However the unintended dangers still existed. He knew of a crewmember that had a tiger as a pet… that would be a really unintended danger.

“Give me a sec and I’ll join you.” Marsh was done a few moments after that. “Lets go.”

Cassidy gave a single nod and moved to the exit to the corridor. Crouching and opening the storage compartment, she found the emergency hand actuator that was stored there on all vessels. They wouldn’t be able to go far with the lack of power throughout the ship, but at least they could take a peek on this deck.

Affixing the actuator, Abrams pressed a couple buttons and heard the door lock click in release. Then she pulled. The doors parted slightly and she pulled harder, forcing it to open more. “Good thing we’re not trying to go to Engineering or something,” she said dryly. With another pull, it released fully and slid open.

Marsh grabbed one side of the door and gave it a shove, the machinery behind the door constantly resisted the movement of the panels even if the door was unlocked. It was a glitch in the design that so rarely was a problem no one ever fixed it.

They already knew there were no lifesigns on the ship, so in her head she was prepared that if they came across anyone they were casualties. But on the other hand, this was her parents’ crew and they were akin to family and there was only so much she could do to brace herself.

The light of her palm beacon cut a swatch through the darkness. She didn’t see anything or anyone immediately she shivered. “Okay, not going to lie, this is creepy.” She turned to Steven. “Do we want to check out any of the meeting rooms?” It was Deck One, so she didn’t expect to find much up here. On other decks, sure, but it would take ages to comb through a low powered ship.

Abrams, COS

“We really should check sick bay, the lounge and engineering, two of them are emergency rally points and something might have been left behind that is useful. And there almost is always something in engineering.” Marsh offered. He had his phaser out and set on stun, with his other hand holding the tricorder. Good defensive preparation was the only way to keep from getting dead.

Part of Cass wanted to scream ‘no!’ but she simply inhaled calmly and nodded. It was easy to forget under the circumstances that this wasn’t just some ship and crew they were investigating the fate of. She had met some of them over the years and heard regular anecdotes. She knew them the way you knew your extended family you lived far away from and she couldn’t deny she cared about them all- not just her parents. The knowledge that Captain Massey was a casualty in the attack weighed heavily on her. Maxine and her mom were good friends and had worked together for a long time now. She was, in essence, much like an aunt.

But she was still determined and proceeded accordingly. “Power is down across the ship. We should try Sickbay first. It’s closest, on deck three. Not too bad of a jaunt through the jefferies tubes,” she said, leading him to the nearest access point.

Steven nodded, the quiet of the ship made him not want to speak and break the silence.

Deck one from their observation was vacant and as she looked around, she had to shake away the shiver that crept through her body. “I still haven’t seen any life signs,” she said as she entered the jefferies tube and crawled towards the ladder that would lead them down two decks. She was already debating in her head whether she’d check out sickbay herself and or let Steven look first. Somehow she thought she’d be pretty badly off if the first body they found was her father’s. He was a medic, after all. Stop it! she chided herself, focusing on positive thoughts.

Abrams, COS

He looked at the tube leading down and flashed his light back and forth being sure it was clear of obstructions. He then paused for a moment listening, seeing if the light and drawn the attention of something that wasn’t showing up on tricorders. He nodded silently to Abrams, slung his tricorder over a should and clipped his phaser back to his side.

He placed his feet outside the rungs of the ladder and used his hand just to hand over hand his way down the Jefferies tube, it was a much faster way to transverse the distance and normal steps. Marsh landed smoothly and cast his beam down one direction then the other.

Cassidy followed quickly and while a part of her wanted to bug him about not letting Security go first, he was perfectly competent to look for danger.

Orienting herself, she picked the short tube, double checked to the left and began to crawl.

Traversing the two decks took about ten minutes and soon they found themselves outside Sickbay. Cassidy drew in a slow breath, steading herself and gave him a nod before forcing the door open like they had at every juncture. She double checked that there was at least minimal life support before she stepped out. “Life support is insufficient on this deck. Helmets up,” she said, triggering the helmet on her suit to close over her head. Air was very good!

Steven frowned, he didn’t much like having his helmet on, it robbed him of his peripheral vision and his ability to hear what was going on around him. Very valuable when on an empty un-powered ship. He could hear so much. “helmet up.”

It was dark here, like every other space and if she were honest, the constant darkness was starting to get to her. As before she had to manually open the door too, but finally the door gave and slid enough open that they could pull it all the way open.

Casting her light into the medical bay, Cassidy shuddered and stepped in. She could see amongst the empty biobeds that some actually weren’t so empty. One had a sheet over and she knew they had to go look, but she found herself rooted to the floor, unable to move much farther.

Abrams, COS

Steven didn’t much like dead bodies either and he paused along with Cassidy, but his disdain was more objective. Cassidy’s was more specific. Her family was on the ship and any body could be very personal to her. “I need reading of this section…” He looked at her, “Lieutenant, I know you’re rusty get to scanning.” He nodded in a kinder fashion than his tone. “Go ahead, get me those readings.”

He walked over to the covered body, lifting the sheet slightly. The figure was male, but wasn’t a command officer. “Yellow shirt,” He said loudly. That would be at least somewhat comforting to her.
