As they approached her door, Vora stopped and turned to Johann. “So… how exactly do you want to go about this?” she asked. “I mean, obviously I can start the conversation, but I don’t want it to feel like it’s my thing. I want you to feel included, and it’s important for Jerrin that we’re on the same page here.”

“It’s totally not your thing; it’s our thing,” Johann said reflexively. “I mean… how complicated is it? We’re getting married. You can start it, or I can start it, or we can find some way to say it at the same time. Or take turns or something.”

Actually, what’s the etiquette for this anyway? Johann wondered. I mean, I’d have asked her father for her hand if he was in the picture… that’s weird to do with a kid, right? He didn’t actually ask Vora this, as she would probably have been even more confused by it than by an average human, who likely would have found the whole question very archaic. Charming, perhaps, but archaic.

“Like, what specifically do we need to be on the same page about? There isn’t some kind of subtle Tenraith thing you haven’t mentioned to me yet, is there?” Given their history, it was actually a pretty fair question.

Vora shook her head. “No. I mean Tenraith weddings aren’t anything unusual as far as cultural traditions go. It’s all just a civil service anyway. But I guess my anxiety is more about parenting and Jerrin accepting you as a parent. Because you are now. You’re involved and when we go in in there and tell him we’re getting married, that changes the dynamics of everything for him. We’ll have to wade through it, and he’ll react any number of ways, but I just want you to be prepared for some perhaps unfair hostility that might go your way. Jerrin, deep down, as far as I’ve observed, has a lot of anger. And he directs that at me, for various reasons I’m still working out. But just understand that you can help dictate what is acceptable and unacceptable in your interactions with him. I trust you.”
