Zeke took up the rear. “I’m certain that he’ll come to us when he’s ready,” he said. “I think that he saw us land.”

“If so, then he might come back this way,” Cass said as she headed towards the forest path, weapon at the ready and set to stun. She took in the sights and sounds, trying to keep her body relaxed so even the smallest sound didn’t make her jump. There was such a thing as being too focused.

Abrams, COS

The path leading into the forest was well worn, appearing to have been traveled for many years. Branches and trees looked like they had been trimmed to give the path a more open feel. It continued on from the grove about 200 meters before coming to a small clearing in the forest. Under the dense foliage of trees above, a 15 square meter area seemed to have been cleared for a small campsite. The campsite was divided by paths and grown bushes into what looked like 5 different areas, however, only two had a sort of shelter in them.

Both shelters were primitive in nature, consisting of large sticks, greenery propped up a triangular fashion, but were larger and looked big enough for two or thee people to sleep in. One of the shelters was in serious disrepair. There were openings in the roof, and several supports were cracking or falling down. The other shelter looked well taken care of, and when comparing the look of the paths, still appeared to be active.

In the center of the campsite was a fire pit, which looked like it had been used many hours ago. There were large logs around the fire where 8 or 9 people might sit comfortably. Leaning against a propped up log was what looked like several tools, some made simply of wood, others of metal, mainly bronze or copper. The remains of what looked like a local deer was sitting on a bed of sticks near the fire. Next to the animal were a few bowls made of combination of wood and animal skin. Each held a different kind of local fruit and wild vegetables. They looked like they had been picked in the last day or so.

At the opposite end of the camp, several other paths, some more worn then others disappeared off into the woods.

Avik walked a bit behind Abrams, her steps attempted to not disrupt any foliage or dead branches. Her eyes were peeled for anything ahead of them. For a moment, she tried to recall the location of any native villages or camps. Before they went more than a few meters in, Avik remembered there being a campsite not far from the gravesite.

“We might want to proceed with caution. If I recall the tricorder scans, there’s a makeshift campsite not far from the graveyard. It could be from the man or the locals. Any sign or evidence of it being the locals, we fall back to the shuttle.” Avik stated, unsure if they should continue the path. She wondered if they should’ve followed the man from the start.

“Agreed,” Abrams said simply.

The wind shifted did slightly and for a brief second, everyone thought they heard a distant shouting. However, it was gone just as quickly.

The security officer’s attention snapped in that direction and she held up a hand to signal them to stop. “Any lifesigns nearby?” she asked, knowing it was easier for the other two to check since she had a weapon in hand currently.

Abrams, COS

Avik looked down at her tricorder. She turned about, letting it scan the whole area and attempt to find any signs of life. Her lips pressed tightly together while she held her breath for the results.

“Scanning now.” She informed Abrams.

Her attention turned to Drake, “We both should scan the area. The more area we cover, the more likely we will detect something. If anything is there. ”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Tricorder scans were limited to about 100 meters with any accuracy. Inside that 100m were a couple wildlife, all herbivores. To the east, just at the edge of the tricorders accurate range were what appeared to be a ravine and possible some rolling hills. To the north a mountain range, seen earlier from the shuttle extended and additional hills and mountains extended south and west. The wind was coming from the North North East, however, the tricorder was able to pick up a wind shift from due east due to a cold front moving along the eastern edge of the sensor radius. A rain storm was off in the distance.

When Avik turned around to do the scan, she stepped on something that sounded like a stick breaking. She felt something tighten across her ankle and the next thing she knew she was hanging up side down about 6 feet in the air. The ground where she had been standing had fallen away, revealing a set of wooden spikes, she hung over the spikes by her ankle, a rope trap, tied to a nearby tree was the only thing preventing her from falling down onto the spikes.

“Gahh!” exclaimed Zeke. He almost dropped his tricorder. “You’ve been treed,” he noted. “Let me see if I can get you safely down.”

When the sound of snapping reached her ears, her mind barely processed what happened. Her vision went from right side up to upside down in moments. She glanced at the pit of spikes below her, wondering how it didn’t cave in before now. The tricorder had slipped from her hand and laid on the pit’s edge, the only evidence of where she stood before the incident. She twisted in place while she attempted to diagnose her condition. Her head didn’t crash into the ground and nothing seemed broken, her hip joint just sore from the abrupt jerk.

“First, grab my tricorder so as not to leave it behind. Second, see if anyone heading this way. The noise might have been loud enough to have been heard by someone nearby. Finally, from what I can see… I’m anchored by that nearby tree.” She pointed to the direction best she could be.

“If you can release the rope and pull me higher, I might be able to cling to the branch then make my way to the trunk. Unless the branch is going to break, this might be the safest option. Unless someone has a better idea?” She looked at the other two to see their thoughts.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Zeke picked up her tricorder. Then he checked to make sure that the landing party was alone. “He’d have to have superhuman hearing to detect us this far away,” he said. “Our last readings said that he was at least 5 kilometers away.”

Then he began to carefully release the offending rope and pull her higher.
