“Well, I might be a parent if he accepts me as one,” Johann said to clarify. “I’m not presuming that will happen overnight or even at all. It’s a good point to make though, considering we’ve had misplaced anger come up as an issue once already.”

Vora nodded, shifting her weight to one foot as she gazed at the door as if she might be able to see through it.

The door did not show any sign of gazing back.

“He hasn’t… like… been weird about that incident, right?” he asked somewhat more awkwardly. “You know the one I’m talking about.” He was talking about the time where Jerrin was under the misunderstanding that Johann and Vora’s relationship was very… transactional.

She shook her head. “No. We sorted that out, and to be honest he hasn’t really said anything one way or another about our relationship since then. That can be interpreted in different ways I suppose, but its never been something he’s made a point about.”

“Well that’s not a bad thing,” he said.

He seemed to think about this for another few seconds. “It’s probably not that important. He’s got his own concerns. Teenage boys always do. We need to make sure he knows that this won’t screw any of those up. It’s a change, but a change he should already be somewhat primed for. He’s been here a while, he knows… now… how our relationship is… it’s probably not going to be as big a deal as we’re making it.”

Vora nodded and chuckled slightly. “Probably. That is my usual tact a lot of the time.”

“So I guess the trick is to just say it and see what happens. And to not take it personally if he has a concern or problem.”

“Agreed,” Vora said. She took in a deep breath and calmly exhaled before entering her quarters.

Inside, Jerrin was sitting on the sofa surrounded by padds on the glass top coffee table and on the cushions around him. He glanced up and gave her a nod of acknowledgment. “I ate already, like you suggested.”

“Okay, good,” Vora said. She looked back at Johann and gave an encouraging smile. “Can you set aside your work for a minute? Johann and I have something we wanted to discuss with you.” She purposefully used his first name to indicate (hopefully) that this wasn’t official ship business.

Jerrin eyed them both curiously, despite his frown. “Okay…” he said, gathering the padds on the couch and moving them to the table.
