Taking off her helmet, she felt immediately better and it took only a moment longer to step out of her suit. Moving more freely, she found the open area and set the tricorder up for Marsh to land.

Marsh reversed his course and headed back to the shuttle he would bring it to the closer landing area with its rear facing the encampment for easier loading of injured people. He could also remove the chairs so the could load stretchers if that was the need.

“How many are currently critical?” Abrams asked the TAM crew.

“Nineteen,” Owens said.

Cassidy exhaled. “Eleven precent. Not terrible under the circumstances.”

“It could have been much worse,” the counsellor agreed. “I’m going to leave Lieutenant Odrix with you until your science officer lands and head back to the encampment to let Commander Abrams know we indeed have company.”

Cassidy nodded. After Owens left, she glanced between Odrix and Zeke. “So, nineteen. I can pilot a runabout from down here too and it would only be 5 runs to get them up. Who’s the CMO?”

“That’d be Lieutenant Hodron,” Bethany said.

“Okay,” Cass said, turning to Zeke. “I’m guessing they already have some sort of triage set-up, so we’ll try and connect you two and we can figure out who needs to go up first.”

Abrams, COS

Marsh was almost as good of a pilot as he thought he was and was quick to reaching the shuttle and the shuttle reaching the landing site. The only question was how was he going to get 19 people up to the Europa in one go. He guessed he could fit twelve if they could sit, twenty if they could stand. But if they were critically injured, standing was likely out. Sitting might have been out as well.

Marsh CSO

“I’ll get the rundown from Hodron,” Zeke agreed. “I brought some extra medical provisions on our shuttle. The closest it is to us, the better.”

CMO

Abrams nodded. She felt better now that she was free from her suit, but knew that the less time they spent down here, the better. She turned and saw the shuttle land neatly and couldn’t help but offer Steven a smile.

The end loading rotated down as Marsh was walking out on it while it dropped to the ground. The closing process began before it completely touched the ground as Steven leapt of the edge. He gave Cassidy a low wave as she looked in his direction. He turned and watched until the back panel cycled to lock. This was a foreign, unexplored planet. Standard operating procedure required visual opening and closing of exterior ports so native organisms didn’t stow away and cause a problem.

“Okay, we need to assess things. Once Lieutenant Marsh rejoins us, we need to speak to Commander Abrams,” Cassidy said, her voice about as damn neutral as she could manage.

He walked quickly to the cluster of officers… “Off this rock is better than on… right?” He wondered why they weren’t lining up to get back to civilizations.

Marsh

Cassidy nodded to Steven, her features tight, carefully controlling her emotions.

An ensign came up with a PaDD. The news of the rescue team was spreading fast. “We have the injured in two staging areas.” Gesturing with one hand… the criticals are under the rock ledge 60 meters that way. Most are radiation posioning.. they got a double dose. There was leakage on the Tien An Mein before they got here and got hit again… we expended all our doses of Hyronlin and most are well beyond it’‘s effectiveness anyways..”

“Okay, we’ll get them first, but”-she pivoted to Zeke-“but mindful to protect yourself from the radiation.” They had had their doses before they left but it never hurt to be careful.

They were led into the main camp and there was definitely commotion as the TAM’s crew saw that indeed people were here to rescue them. One of the officers led Drake to the first staging area where the criticals were that including an unconscious Captain Massey. The Bolian CMO, Hodron waved Zeke over.

Marsh and Abrams were led to the main cluster of shelters and escape pods where a tall woman with a mess of grey-streaked blond hair stood, hands on hips. Her command uniform jacket was ripped in several places and there was a small bandage on her forehead along with other smears of dirt and grease. She wore a grim and expectant position that remained for several seconds after they appeared over the small rise. But as she watched them approach, her expression shifted into disbelief.

“Bet you dinner, I cry first,” Cass said to Steven as they drew closer.

Cassidy crossed the remaining distance in a few paces and simply wrapped her arms silently around the woman who still looked shocked. Taller than even Cass, she gazed at Marsh briefly before closing her arms and returning her daughter’s fierce hug.

At length, the two woman let go and Cassidy stepped back. “Commander Abrams, this is Lieutenant Steven Marsh, the Europa’s Chief of Science. Lieutenant Marsh, Norene Abrams, The Tian An Men’s first officer.” She was entirely aware that she was introducing her long-term partner to her mother, but were they both aware of that reality?

Norene gave hime a weary smile and offered her hand. “Good to meet you, Lieutenant. Wish it was under better circumstances but we’re just damned glad someone found us.”
