SNIP

Sienna laughed softly against his lips as she heard his errant thought. Eventually, we should probably do more than this, but I like the way you think.

Nox, CNS

Oh, ‘more’? he thought. Kind of ambiguous, there.

After they were done with this particular kiss, he spoke aloud: “Shall we continue to walk?” The beach still looked remarkable with perfect sunny weather, and they so far seemed to be alone on the island. Though the program was configured to change all of those things on the fly if intent for something else was indicated.

Sienna grinned and moved a little bit away so they could walk side by side, but she kept close. “So, Sandy Island ish.” She gestured to the beach around them that he had made. From your description, it seems a bit obscure. Is early Earth geology a hobby of yours?”

Nox, CNS

“No,” he said simply. “Writing holodeck programs is a hobby of mine. I also like Earth history. I kinda went through a phase of re-creating places that don’t exist anymore. Actually, in this case, never really existed. Places like the World Trade Center in New York that I was telling you about the other day.”

“I went through a whole phase of making places that don’t exist anymore. Then I also did one with experiences that don’t really exist anymore either, or at least not in the same way. Like with jetplanes and automobiles and stuff like that. Even though we’ve had holography for thirty years now there’s still a lot of stuff we haven’t tried with the technology to let people have experiences that were previously infeasible to have.”

Add ‘sea lion as a pet’ to the backlog, he thought to himself.

She grinned, imagining a sea lion as a pet and shook her head ruefully. “So why command instead of being a holodeck program creator?”

Nox, CNS

“That’s a good question,” he said in response. “I almost retired a few years ago to do that. But I found out I was kind of good at… umm… commanding… by accident, and some people encouraged me to stick around and go to Command School instead.”

The words were all true, but it didn’t take any Betazoid empathy to tell that a lot of very relevant details were being glossed over. What Nox would be able to tell was that there was something about that story he was somewhat resistant to talk about. As if he was gradually preparing not to. He didn’t have any “loud” thoughts to tip her off as to what that might be, though.
