Lia finished her shift report with an exclamation point, both in the literal sense and the metaphorical one. While some might find detailing an otherwise routine shift to be tedious, she delighted in providing a succinct, but thorough report on any official business that she’d conducted during it. She carefully set the PaDD down and stood up from behind the desk she’d been manning for the last hour, stretching slowly as her muscles complained about the poor ergonomics she’d employed. As she pressed her interlaced fingers toward the ceiling of the room, her stomach offered a loud gurgle and she flushed slightly, glancing around the room to ensure that it wasn’t as loud as it sounded to her. Releasing her fingers, she shook out her arms briefly and then offered pleasantries as she began to make her way out.

Lia began to follow the now familiar path back to her quarters, but paused by the turbolift, deciding that people watching in Nine Forward sounded more entertaining for the evening. It had been a pretty quiet shift and she was desperate for some kind of social interaction, even if it ended up being more observational than active. Collecting a plain soda water from the bar and a bowl of pasta with parmesan cheese and butter, she settled into a table by a window that allowed her to ponder the other crew in the fairly busy lounge while she ate.

Feeling the isolation breathing down her neck, Avik had decided to eat in the Nine Forward. Though few officers actually approached her, her mind drew comfort from their activity. Something about the sense of bodies moving nearby pacified her loneliness.

Avik scooped up another bit of the coleslaw. The vinegar and sweetness swirled on her tongue before sliding down her throat. The combination felt strangely satisfying to her as she went in for another spoonful. A hamburger sat, untouched for now, at the center of her plate. Surrounding it had been Cole slaw, a fizzy beverage, and roasted potatoes. Mainly an Earth meal, but simple to appreciate.

Her eyes shifted at the movement of an officer nearby shifting to return to his duty.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

The movement of the officer had caught Lia’s eye as well. She offered a friendly smile as she made brief eye contact with Avik, noting that the woman ate alone as well. She was aware of the XO, but she hadn’t yet had the opportunity to meet her since beginning her tour on the Europa. She glanced at the meal she was eating and a slight hint of surprise graced her features at the predominant human theme to it. The XO had good taste in cuisine, she pondered.

Avik looked up and watched Adrie sit down, recognizing her from a previous mission. When she spotted the woman’s eyes widened, Avik suspected she knew why. Vulcans tended to be vegetarians for most their lives and rarely digested meat. Even artificial meat. The practice of doing it, after digesting a pill for added enzymes, had been a personal choice.

“It’s one of my favorite meals. I grew up on a colony with the human population being dominant there.” She replied, sensing the possible question before it aired. Her hands had been covered with gloves as she took a bite from her main dish.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Lia took the verbal response to her unasked question to be an unspoken invitation and picked up her meal, making her way around her own table to reach the neighboring one that Avik occupied. “May I?” she inquired, her eyes glancing at the vacant seat to indicate her desire to join the Vulcan. She noted the gloves with interest, but left the question unaired until she had been given permission to sit.
