Scanning the Klingon vessel would show that the warp core had aged into damaging itself. The only damage throughout the ship was disrepair due to age.

Marsh started humming to himself. He put an array on continuous scan of the warp drive and core. That was one of the few systems that could endanger the landing party in such a fashion that they couldn’t respond safely.

Matty looked at the others “The warp core has aged to the point of damaging itself.” She said “I’m not sure that we’ll be able to repair it, however, we’ll let the team over there decide on that.” She said worried slightly about the team over there even though there were no life signs that she knew about.

CE

“We should probably just have them shut it off,” the Captain said pragmatically. “Umm, assuming they don’t actually need it to generate power for systems. I mean, if nobody has to stay there for the trip back. Or maybe not, since century-old Klingon batteries…”

The train of thought just kind of trailed off, as if it was going through a tunnel.

“Hard to shut down a warp drive… We could bring the ship near a star… let them eject the warp drive and tow the relic to the nearest starbase or Smithsonian.”

Marsh

Mattie looked at Marsh “That is a practical solution. It wouldn’t be too hard to eject especially since it’s already seriously damaged and towing would not put too much of a strain on the Europa.” She said as she ran the calculations again. “You’re call Captain.”

CE

“Yeah, that works too,” the Captain said. “We’ll see after the team checks in. It’s not like it’s going to blow up right now.”

The Captain’s mind wandered slightly as they waited for any word. Maybe I should ask about that thing, he thought. The one that Avik was mentioning the other day…

“Hey, I know it’s kind of off topic,” he said suddenly as he turned to face both Marsh and Sullivan directly. “But how would you feel about a senior staff poker game? Someone tossed that idea into the Suggestion Box.” It was a metaphorical suggestion box, but he didn’t want to make it sound like he or Avik was ordering them to socialize.

“What are the stakes?” Marsh was already thinking a way to separate the Captain from his money.

Marsh

“That’s a really good question,” the Captain answered. “It was kind of pitched as a ‘we should do something fun together off-duty regularly’ thing, so I didn’t really think that far ahead on it. I’m sure that we could have it be some casual amount of money. Assuming we all actually have some.”

It might have been a bit of a leap to make that assumption; the way many humans–especially those from Earth–talked about money, lead much of the galaxy to think they didn’t have any at all for any reason. Johann knew that wasn’t the case with Marsh, given the science officer’s status as a member of French nobility. Which of course raised obvious questions: Did the Captain have money? If so, how much? More importantly, how?
