Avik’s head turned to face Marsh, absorbing the information. She stood there in silence and digested it. On a logical level, she could slightly relate to Abrams. Facing the possibility of a parental figure nearing death was never easy.

“When it calms down a little, I’m going to pull Abrams from active duty so she can be available to her family.” Marsh said flatly… he was kind of asking for permission… but not really.

Before she could comment, Avik caught sight of the first wounded arriving. She closed her lips then began to give orders to the doctors and nurses. When Commander Abrams began to speak to her, the XO paused and listened. After hearing the last name and noticing the likenesses, Avik knew who this was.

The chimes of the comm system sounded, and then the Captain’s voice could be heard:

=/\= Bridge to Sickbay, the last shuttle of critical cases has arrived. Is everything ready on your end? =/\=

— Johann Dvorak, CO

Avik exhaled then answered the Captain.

Her eyes turned to Commander Norene Abrams.

“First, we’ll get you looked at and inject radiation treatment. You can fill me in on the details of your crew’s condition and important details. It wouldn’t help the crew’s morale if their commanding officer wasn’t suited for duty.”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Norene nodded. “Once your team has done triage, I’ll be happy to,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Kayla entered the sickbay. She had been put in charge while the CMO was away on a mission. She had only stepped out for a moment. She knew that they were expecting radiation exposure patients…

The doors to Sickbay opened and admitted several people, including some of the TAM’s medical staff, with patients in tow, as well as Cassidy. “Last of the critical,” the security chief called out as she helped one of the medics move a scientist with internal bleeding from a fall post-evacuation.

Stepping back, Lieutenant Abrams, surveyed the scene, watching as the Europa’s medical team jumped into action to triage the new arrivals. Finally, she looked over at Avik, Marsh and her mother and nodded, more to herself than anything, before she joined them. “The rest of the crew is being split between the Brahe and Fermi. They did say to let them know if the critical cases overwhelmed our resources and we needed backup.”

Abrams, COS

Avik looked at Marsh, but said nothing. She had a feeling even if she protested, the man would still do what he thought was right. As the last of the critical arrived, the XO nodded.

“You handled the situation well.” Avik turned and collected a tricorder.

“Anyone that’s been exposed to the site should receive a radiation shot as a precaution. We can’t have any more individuals falling sick while treating the wounded.” Again, her eyes fell to Commander Abraham.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“We had one before we went down,” Cassidy said. “But another won’t hurt given how the exposure affected the TAM’s crew.”

Cassidy shifted her attention to her mother, noting Avik’s rather intention focus on Norene. “Dosages can be pre-set. I do you, you do me, then we know you’re taken care of.” She gestured over her shoulder towards the wounded. “There in good hands. There’s nothing more you can do for them.”

Norene seemed amused for a moment before smirking slightly, her posture deflating slightly. “I know.”

And maybe that was the essential truth there. Commander Abrams knew that there was only so much she personally could do, but what Captain or First Officer ever let that stop them? Cassidy understood that if their positions were reversed, she would be hands on every minute possible trying to make sure as many of her crew lived. Cass turned to Steven and Avik. “Could one of you kindly wrangle together a couple doses?” Avik had a medical background and Steven knew exactly how to slip into the fray and get what was needed from those who had the knowledge. At this point she was just too frazzled and other things, namely a very important patient, was taking up most of her mental space.

Abrams, COS

“Lieutenant Abrams,” Marsh said carefully… since there were a few of them floating around at the moment. “There aren’t any pressing concerns in science right now… you can support anyone in medical as you see fit.”

Marsh

OOC: You’re funny. Cass isn’t in Science anymore and they’re both DH’s. :P But I’ll just assume he meant security and respond accordingly.

OOC: I did forget, but Marsh cleared it with the XO… so there is that.

IC:
Cass gave him a funny look but then nodded. He did technically outrank her, after all. “Once I’m inoculated, I’ll be happy to take a break.” Aside from when she had dozed off for that little while, she really hadn’t slept in well in a few days. She had tried, of course, but her mind had been so preoccupied she just hadn’t been able to shut down and sleep. But she was clearly doing better than, say, her mother was, so she knew she would hold on for awhile longer and see how what her father’s prognosis was before she decided to crash.

Abrams, COS

Avik watched the interaction between Cassidy and her mother. When Cassidy mentioned dosing each other, the XO offered the tricorder to the COS. She had managed to scoop one up before things became too chaotic as she pre-set the dose. The Vulcan didn’t fully trust her instincts, but sound logic backed it up now. Blood relatives would cooperate with each other before they would with a stranger. Even one with good intentions.

“I managed to collect a tricorder while you two were talking. I do agree with Lt. Marsh. Speaking from personal experience, having family members under medical care is difficult.” Avik passed off the device and the doses.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Cassidy nodded. “Thank you, Commander,” she said as she accepted the tricorder and the hyposprays. “Come on, let’s do this quick,” she said, leading her mother to the side where they were out of the way. Every bed was necessary at the moment and she didn’t want to get in the way of the medical staff.

Meanwhile, people were being assessed. Her father, (also Lieutenant Abrams), was being looked over. He had suffered some internal bleeding during the escape from the ship when trying to get patients to safety, as well as a dose of radiation poisoning when the Tian An Amen‘s Sickbay had several explosions. Add to that prolonged radiation exposure on the planet and his body was not able to deal with the injuries well, even after the bleeding in his liver and spleen was at least partially dealt with despite not being able to conduct surgery. But the more detailed scans available to them on the Europa showed that he had a small hepatic tear that had been very slowly leaking blood and impairing the function of his left kidney. The radiation poisoning had also begun to damage his DNA.

A few beds over, Captain Massey’s head wound had not only resulted in a skull fracture but a serious traumatic brain injury. She still had not regained consciousness and was showing no signs of active brain activity beyond minimal autonomic functions. The radiation has also impacted her body’s ability to conduct repairs.

“I’ll.take Captain Massey first,” Zeke said. Zeke had mostly recovered from his own injury. He still had a wicked black eye. He wasn’t too sure where he got that from. But it could always be treated later.

“Has the EMH.been activated yet?” he asked as he got his tools ready.

CMO

“Not so far,” Cassidy said, but I think there hasn’t been a rush of critical cases. The rest of the TAM’s crew is dispersed between the other two ships.”

“I think we can handle it,” one of the doctors, Ensign Sandra Bass, called out as she double-checked Adir’s vitals. “We’ll need to have two operating bays working. Lieutenant Adir can’t wait.”

Cassidy surveyed the situation. She didn’t want to be pacing about the med bay waiting and she doubted her mother would want to either. “Maybe we should just let them work. They’ll call me as soon as there is anything to know,” she said gently.

Norene exhaled deeply and nodded, glancing at Lt. Marsh and Commander Abrams. “It would probably be a good idea to at least say hello to your captain.”

“And then maybe a shower, food and rest?” Cassidy suggested.

“Uh huh, that too probably,” Commander Abrams said with a tiny wry smile.
