Jerrin was fixated on the sensation of her thumb as it moved across his palm. Much like his mother, touch was rather powerful. He heard her question, but it took a moment to actually process it and answer. “I don’t really do any. I did a little bit of sparring with the former security chief before he had to leave the ship.” He turned to Nox suddenly, completely forgetting the thing that has caused his panic attack. “Hey! Do you think Cass would let me train with her?” he said with some excitement and no small amount of eagerness. He wasn’t aware how obvious his feelings for Abrams were, but they swooshed through his body rather suddenly.

~Jerrin

She blinked, trying to take in the rush of emotion he felt towards Cass and the question he posed. It was obvious to her of course, being Betazed and empathic. Like most young men and women with crushes, it is not likely that Jerrin had been discreet in his interactions with Cass. She didn’t want to outrightly encourage his affection for Cassidy Abrams so she circled a bit. “I don’t know. I would have to see if perhaps Cass has the time to train others given that she is now the chief of security, but more important is if she has the desire or ability to teach. Not everyone who can do something can teach it or is willing to take on a student. I could see if she would be willing. Or maybe she can set up a class. I know I wouldn’t mind brushing up on some martial arts and shooting. It’s been a while.”

Nox, CNS

“That could be fun,” Jerrin said with an emphatic nod. “Hey, did you know Cassidy has the sharp shooting record on the ship? I always thought that that was kind of amazing,” he said, before turning back to their meal in progress.

“So what’s next?”

~Jerrin

She smiled, pulling the layering pan closer to her so she could do the layering of the pasta and leave him to placing the ingredients on top of each layer of pasta she made. “Next we cover this dish with the lid and place it in the oven behind you to bake. We will wait about a half hour thanks to modern technology, place the bruchetta we made in for about 5 minutes and then we are done with the dinner itself. How about we make a bowl of mixed greens salad?”

“Okay, we can do that. Just none of that pale crisp stuff. It tastes terrible,” Jerrin said with a grimace.

“So, you like Cassidy a lot huh?”

Nox, CNS

Jerrin sprinkled on the cheese on the final layer and avoided looking at Nox. “Uh, well, she’s kind of bad ass, you know. And she’s really nice. She’s a great friend to my mom,” he said non-chalantly.

~Jerrin

She went to the refrigerator and pulled out a few containers with salad fixings and placed them on the counter. “Start with the big bowls, they have the differing kinds of greens in them. I have a garden here that I like to maintain and they are fresh from that. Put the ones you like in the wood bowl in the middle of the island. Fill it almost to the top and then we can pick what we want to mix it with. Be careful not to put any leaves that have brown stuff on them or look wilted.”

“I can do that,” Jerrin said with a nod. It was easy to slip into a task like this. He could almost pretend the panic attack hadn’t even happened. He followed Nox’s instructions to the letter and was meticulous as he kept an eye out for less than desirable greens.

“Cassidy is a very smart woman and my counterpart did well to let her transfer from Science to Security. She seems to have flourished there quite well.”

Nox, CNS

“Yeah. My mom said she was a good scientist, but really didn’t love it. I think my mom only is sad about Cass’ transfer because they don’t get to hang out in the labs anymore. Apparently they had a lot of fun. But then again, my mom moved to astrometrics, so she’s not in the labs as much anymore either.” Jerrin shrugged.

~Jerrin

“When coworkers move or shift positions and we don’t get to see them often anymore, it can be sad. I miss all of mine. Every last one of them is in a place I can’t reach. It’s hard not to talk to your best friend every day, especially if he was your husband.” Sienna had slowly stopped her task as she spoke and swallowed hard before turning back to pull out individual serving dishes so they could set the table. It was going to be dinner time soon.

Jerrin gave Nox a curious look but didn’t say anything, despite feeling what… sympathy? Understanding? The strange thing was that he never really missed anything about Tenra, and yet, even then, he wished he was there still. But only sometimes. The Europa was far better in more ways than he could explain, and was at loss to explain the weird sense of nostalgia for a place that had never been particularly kind to him.

“Anyway, who would you like to invite to dinner? Your mom certainly.... Johann too? Anyone else?”

Nox, CNS

HIs eyes went wide. “Wait, what? People are going to eat with us?” It wasn’t a crazy idea, just not one he was expecting.

~Jerrin

She hadn’t expected his surprise, but really, she should have. She gave him a soft smile. “My grandmother always said that good food is best shared. Why not share your hard work with those you care for. However, if you wish the dinner to be just you and me, I would be honored to have it be so. It is up to you, like so many things are.” she said as she turned and began to transfer dinnerware to the table.
