A normal day for the Europa. The ship was running smoothly, all normal. When the captain checked his messages in the morning, he would find a new message for him.

I never thought I’d like this vest, Johann thought as he sat at his desk. But it really is a lot more comfortable than wearing the standard duty uniform.

He took a sip from his coffee mug before pressing the button to display the morning’s messages.

To: Captain Johann Dvorak

From: Commander Alexander Hartke

Orders: The Europa is to report to Starbase 51 at your earliest convince to resupply and to receive new orders from. Shore leave will be granted at Captains discretion for the duration of the resupply. On arrival at Starbase 51, Captain Dvorak and Commander Avik are requested to meet with Rear Admiral Jason Mcginnis for orders briefing.

Signed;

Commander Alexander Hartke,
Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Mcginnis, Starbase 51.

-GMT

Johann frowned slightly at the screen. Starbase 51 was out on the farthest edge of known space, even farther than most of the rest of the Black Fleet’s area of operations, and their last mission hadn’t been too difficult. If they were going to offer shore leave up front and insist on a resupply it was because this Rear Admiral Mcginnis probably had a long and difficult mission in store for them. He pushed the intercom button, and put himself on speakers all throughout the ship.

=/\= All hands, this is the Captain speaking. =/\= He paused for a moment for maximum dramatic effect.

=/\= We’ve just received new orders. Europa will be headed to Starbase 51 for resupply, after which we will be given a new assignment. Shore leave will be available during the resupply operation. That is all. Dvorak out. =/\=

They always give us the leave when we don’t really need it, right? he thought. He pressed the intercom button again =/\= Bridge… actually nevermind I’ll come right out. =/\=

He got up from his desk and walked across the room to the door that lead directly to the Bridge. It parted for him, and he walked right through it to where he would no doubt find Avik having the first watch of the day.

“Status?” he asked her.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

NE Gordon was at the Helm. “Course is laid in for Starbase 51 sir. At Warp 5 we should be there in.” He checked his station. “9 days 4 hours. All systems are normal.” He reported to the Captain.

-GMT

The Captain shot the younger man a glare for the breach in protocol.

Avik had been given the first watch on the bridge. Her posture reminding many crew members of a still, organic statue as she stared forward. Her ears listened to the crew following the captain’s orders before a loud hiss caught her attention. She turned about to see the CO’s door open and his figure step into the bridge, the word ‘Status’ out slipped from his lips. Avik paused in her reply as she spotted Gordon begin to speak up.

She was gradually getting better at reading and determining the crew’s behavior patterns. Despite that, Dvorak still presented enough issues to keep her on her toes. For him, the XO began to adopt a wait then reply method during their interations.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“Thank you Ensign, but I was speaking to Commander Avik,” the Captain said somewhat more politely than he thought. He returned his gaze to his XO and attempted to soften it before addressing her next.

NE Gordon looked taken back. “I’m sorry sir. I’m just excited about the new mission.”

He pondered this for a moment. Maybe that was a bit too harsh, he thought. After all, it wasn’t like this one was in the bad batch of Ensigns we had a few missions ago. Then again we never did figure out how that happened in the first place. The behavior of some junior officers during that mission was so bad that Johann actually phasered one of them for leaving their post during combat. Which Fleet Command had apparently considered totally justified, given that he was still in Command and all of the careers of that entire bridge shift seemed to have ended completely.

OOC: Just so you’re in on the joke, our last GMT had a habit of using NEs to highlight plot problems we were ignoring by having them act generally helpless and unprofessional. It was really funny to read but also really implausible. But we decided to play it straight, so two of the NEs ended up court martialed and we had a series of side sims where the Captain was a lot more angry about discipline than normal.

OCC: No worries, nice to know though, I could have fun with the NE’s.

“Nine days?” Marsh questioned. He didn’t need the computer, “We can be there in under four days, if we go to warp 7. Still at a very leisurely pace an that gets us three extra days of shore leave… or at least shore leave three days earlier…”

Normally Range left Bridge duty to his younger officers that needed seasoning, it was good for them, it happened to be a shift he had for himself since enough others were off for one reason or another.

“You know, I was just thinking the same thing,” Dvorak admitted, without admitting that he suspected that the shore leave wasn’t going to make up for whatever was going to come after it. “Increase speed to Warp 7,” he ordered.

He finally turned back to Avik. He stepped slightly closer to her in the chair, to indicate that whatever they were going to talk about wasn’t exactly a public discussion. Lowering his voice he said: “There’s a briefing for you and I when we get there. With a Rear Admiral Jason Mcguinness.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Avik let her thoughts slid into a compartment. She felt the CO’s reaction to a Junior over a Senior was treading on favoritism, but considering past events it had logical reasoning behind it. This satisfied her enough to let it go. Her head turned to view the approaching CO, realizing something pressing was on his mind and in a simple statement was revealed.

She paused a moment in thought, trying to remember if she had ever heard of the name before. It was unlikely but it could’ve been in passing reading.

“That is… irregular,” she briefly commented, lowering her tone slightly. Until she got additional data, jumping to assumptions or theories couldn’t feed her curiosity.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

OCC: I’ll post later today on Starbase 51.

-GMT

OOC: Cool.

IC: “Yeah,” the Captain simply said. “I’ve never heard of this guy either. Not that that really means anything; once you get to that level it’s all a chessboard that seems to be constantly shifting around.” Or maybe it wasn’t, but just seemed that way to him because his status as the Europa’s Commanding Officer seemed to be the one relatively stable thing in Black Fleet since he had been assigned to it.

The doors to.the bridge swooshed as Zeke entered. “Well, it’s about time,” he said. “I also put in to have the replicator in the sick bay checked out. It’s been acting strange.”

Lt. Zeke Drake
CMO

Marsh looked over… “If the engineers are too slow for you Doc. I can give it a look over.”

Marsh

“I think we’re picking up a new Chief Engineer at Starbase 51 also,” he said a little louder, this time for the benefit of both Marsh and Drake. “I haven’t gotten the file yet but they’re supposed to be already waiting.” Little did he knew, they all already knew who the Chief Engineer was…

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Avik nodded, though she shifted slightly. A subtle indicator she was uncomfortable with the fact there was no file on their newest CE. Their prior one had been reassigned to another station and already packed, ready to depart when they reached their destination. These type of transfers went smoothly usually. She didn’t expect any complications to occur unless something changed.

Noting his comment, spoke, “I’m sure it will be sorted out when the new Chief Engineer comes onboard.”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“If its a priority. Sometimes the new guy wants to tinker around in the department, before they actually get to fixing anything.”

Sienna listened to the announcement. Her heart had tugged a little at hearing his voice and she hated herself for it. Shaking her head, she returned to work only to find herself distracted and not paying enough attention to the latest psychological protocols handed down by Star Fleet. Sighing, she sat back and closed her eyes, letting her mind wander where it obviously wanted to go. Leave … for a person who had no friends and no family here. It would be an interesting prospect from a psychological standpoint. In fact, she felt like one long psychological experiment. How far would she go in this time so similar to her own and yet without the safety net of real connection with anyone? Time would tell she supposed. After a good hour of letting her mind wander, she made herself return to the task at hand. The experiment would have to just wait a little while longer.

Nox, CNS

OOC: Apparently I didn’t realize that this thread continued. SO this would be my official post. Ignore the other.

-GMT

“It sounds nuts,” Zeke admitted. “But according to the last mission reports, while we were on the planet, some locals managed to beam onto the ship. They used the sickbay replicator to create some critters that ran amok.”

Lt. Zeke Drake
CMO

Marsh

Range looked over at Zeke and shrugged, “If it wasn’t weird, wouldn’t be Starfleet.” Then the Chief turned back to his station to get ready for anything that might have been needed of him on the supposedly uneventful journey from here to the Starbase, and whatever came after that.

Lt Commander Range, COS

“Warp seven… he turned to the XO, “if you can talk the captain into warp eight… its under 70 hours.”

Marsh

“As replicators specifically can’t create lifeforms, perhaps they introduced some sort of advanced alien technology to our device,” Zeke said. “However, I also haven’t ruled out mass hallucination.”

Lt Zeke Drake
CMO

“It is not impossible to reprogram a replicator.” Marsh tilted his head back. “Give me enough time, I probably could give a life form or two the spark of life…”

Marsh

“Well, if they could pull that off, they’re a lot more advanced then we were led to believe,” Zeke snorted in response. “I mean, think of the implications, man! I could replicate lost organs and limbs! Make seeds that will flourish on a starving colony!”

Lt. Zeke Drake
CMO

“Hmm,” Marsh tilted his head back and forth. “Sarcasm Doctor… isn’t that a little beneath you?”

Marsh

“Generally speaking, I only resort to sarcasm in times of great duress, Lieutenant Marsh,” Zeke replied.

CMO

Marsh shook his head. The doctors criteria for ‘great duress’ seemed pretty low.

Marsh

“Generally speaking,” Zeke said as he grinned. “Well, I doubt that anyone would deny that our last mission was a pretty odd one. And a nice shore leave for the entire crew is just what this doctor orders.”

CMO
