Ashlyn grinned wildly at the XO, “No clue at all. Probably should have had some introductory programs first.” Ashlyn observed the ship for a brief moment. “From what you remember of human ships in the 18th century-ish, where would you say the powder room is? I’m trying to decide if we should target the main source of their weapons and potentially sink their ship or go for the difficult shot of their mast and cripple their ship so they can’t follow us.” Ashlyn held up her cutlass with a raised eyebrow. “I pray we don’t get boarded, this is not my ideal combat element.”

“This could be a tutorial and allowing us to learn without fully breaking the illusion.”

Her hand reached out and picked up a glowing blade. She carefully examined. Almost instantly, data overlapped into her sight. It indicated the dangerous side, how her hand should be positioned on it, and more. Like a virtual reality guide for a player in a game. She promptly corrected her finger’s position.

“I just picked up a sword and the visual overlapped activated. Just more evidence to show that if we’re supposed to know how to use it, we just need to touch it.”

She paused upon hearing Ashlyn’s question.

“The powder magazine is located in the ship’s center. So it will take a lot to hit and sink it. Mast has better odds.”

Ashlyn picked up the sword and held it according to the visual prompt, then shook her head. “What I mean is that I have no formal training with the use of a blade like this. No idea how to move my body correctly and there is no way for the program to move it for us. The only time I’ve had a chance to use melee weapons in training was in the academy, you know what I learned from that? Don’t fight Klingons on their terms, you will lose. So instead, I learned to take advantage of my surroundings to lay traps and obstacles to slow and disable opponents. I try not to face off against an opponent at all. Either way, use a chain shot if we have it. It’s designed for taking down a mast. If we don’t, use what we have and take out their propulsion.”

“Fair enough, but if you know where to place your foot then makes it easier. It’s also something to practice as we sail.” Avik pointed out, not underestimating Ashlyn’s ability to adapt.

At her current captain’s orders, Avik turned to the crew. While she held a stoic mask, her word phrasing clashed with her usual demeanor on the bridge.

“Get the chain shot ready and aim at the mast. Stir your rumps you lazy rats!” She paused to look at Ashlyn.

“That wasn’t too much, was it?”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Ashlyn took a moment to gawk at the Lieutenant Commander, clearly not expecting the ‘in character’ outburst. “Admittedly, that is the most expressive exclamation I’ve ever seen come from a Vulcan, no offense intended. Colored me impressed with your improvisational skills.” Ashlyn seemed to get lost in thought for a moment before deciding to take a mop and cutting off the head to make it into an impromptu staff. “Remind me the next time we do this program to bring some Tonfa or an Iron Rod. Both would be time appropriate if not regional and I know them more than a sword.” Ashlyn gives the staff a test spin and a few lunges to test balance before shrugging. It wasn’t ideal but it was safer than something that she could injure herself with. “As soon as they can make the shot, fire the first volley.”

“Or you could state it in the feed back for the program. The engineer requested it after all.” Avik pointed out as she smiled on the inside.

She watched Ashlyn break a mop into a crude weapon. A few crew members paused to observed her. When they noted Avik looking into their direction, they quickly rushed.

“Aye, aye captain.” Avik replied as she measured the distance.

As the ship curved over the next wave, she ordered the fire. Canons blasted as they veered to reveal their side. The balls rocketed across the air, out of four shots one managed to hit. It nicked the mast, but it still remained upright. The ship continued to gain ground onto theirs.

“I think we’re getting boarded even if we don’t want it.”
