The Ensign sighed and leaned back in the seat, unsatisfied with the situation she found herself in. “At this point, I don’t know. The identity you can use is a collection of well-conceived lies and your real identity is unsafe to use. There isn’t anything in any manual I’ve read or looked through that would prepare me for how to handle this. You’re not Starfleet Intelligence because if you were they’d have sent instructions shortly after you popped up on the scanners as identified. Flags would have gone off when I did my research on you. You’re just a huge unknown factor.” Trenton leaned forward, resting her elbows on the counter. “I don’t think there is anything I could ask you that I would get a straight answer for. Even if you did give me a straight answer, I don’t think there is anything I could do with any of the information you gave me. For example, were you married or have kids? Doesn’t matter, Shane Warwick is dead and Carson Lowe isn’t real.”

“Married? No. never. Had my heart broken once. Vulcan Nurse on the Dresden.” Shane replied, “You know them Vulcan females. Graceful, Elegant…” His face started to glaze over as he thought about this lost love. He seemed to visibly shutter then continued, “But, when I professed my love to her she told me she was engaged. You know one of them ritual engagements made when they couple was six or something. She actually liked the guy. I countered with offering to be her secret lover, but that just pushed her further away. In the end she transferred off the ship. I never saw her again.”

“Oh, I handled it well. Let me tell you. I got hammered. And not just once. I was drunk for at least four days.” Shane made this statement evenly and seemingly with no regret. “This was when I was still Active Duty. In fact, I was scheduled to get promoted on that fourth day. But I was so hammered, I bent the female XO over, gave her a sloppy kiss and grabbed her backside on my way off the platform. You can look it up, I’m sure it’s in my file.”

“Kids? No. Not that of know of at least.” He added with a smirk.

Ashlyn placed a comm badge on the counter in front of Warwick. “I could have given this to you at Security if you had chosen to come by, would have saved some trouble. It’ll grant you general guest access to social and educational areas, but none of the restricted areas. This way you can move about and feel less trapped until we can officially decide what to do with you.” Trenton took another pull from her bottled water. “Do you plan to solidify your identity yet, or are you going to keep it ambiguous for some reason?”

“No, I am Shane Warwick. My reason for being Carson Lowe is long gone. I only used that name to hide from the assassin that was looking for me. The one that killed me.”

“I’m not Starfleet, not any more.” he added, whether Trenton wanted to hear it or not. “I’m free now. Free to be myself for the first time in a long time.”

“And I’m alone as well. Parents, Brother are both gone. No children, no woman…although I might make another pass at Abrams. Did you see the way she was looking at me in Sickbay?” Again that crooked smile appeared.

Looking down at the comm badge he realized what Trenton had done. She had trusted him. He wasn’t used to that. “Thank you…,” and then he added in a lower tone, “…Ashlyn.”

(I apologize for my long delay, my father was in the hospital and I had to help my mother cope.)

Ashlyn gave Shane a sidelong smirk while taking another sip from her bottle of water. “Don’t stress it, just stop trying to cut corners. All that will do is generate unnecessary work for myself and the security team which is the fastest way onto the Lieutenant’s bad list. A list I am all too familiar with I’m afraid.” Ashlyn hadn’t been cutting corners, but her rather extreme reactions to stress still generate problems that she is working through. To top it off, in a vulnerable moment she had broken into another officer’s office by using a vulnerability she had found while testing security systems, which of course generated no shortage of problems to address.
