Vora shook her head. “Not yet. Well, I haven’t myself. Something to eat would be quite nice, actually. And it gives me a chance to see more of the colony as well.” She looked down at the boy. “Jasper, do you have any favourite foods?” Meanwhile, she was being mindful of the others around her and hoping she didn’t cross any lines with Avik’s family that would strain things between them any further. She had caught a bit of the conversation behind her when she was talking with Jasper, but not enough to get any context.

Jasper paused to consider her question. “I like it when Aunt Avik makes chicken and fries.”

In the back, Sivr sighed then looked in his daughter’s direction. “You should be encouraging a more plant-based diet than the slaughter of organisms, Avik. I do not understand how cooking or consuming meat will benefit Jasper’s development.”

Avik immediately rebuked her father’s disapproval, her voice calm despite the obvious argument. “Not all civilizations see meat consumption as negative, Father. In some cases it is cultural and to avoid it can create complications or insult the host. Rather than shun it, I eat it to allow my body to adjust and prevent illness.”

She continued to keep up with the group as she then added. “If my nephew wants a specific type of nourishment and it allows him to relate to those who eat it, I see no reason to deny him it. It allows him to co-exist with those he wants to associate with.”

That appeared to end the argument in its tracks. Cassandra gave Avik a brief appreciative smile while she prodded her son toward the cafe.

With that unexpected exchange, Vora knew better than to add anything, but she did glance at Jasper and give him a wink.

Jasper had tensed up when Avik and his grandfather had started to exchange words. As his eyes looked to Vora, a small smile flickered across his lips at her wink. His tension dissipated from his figure into the air.

Gradually the quaint brick building came into view. Ivy grew heavily on the alley wall and the window held the name, ‘The Pasta Corner’, in flowing white letters. Outside a few metal tables held customers who idly chattered and ate a wide range of dishes. Most likely the special of the cafe.

Once they entered, a bell chimed. Inside the interior filled with flora plants and a rich red carpet. Light wood blend contrasted nicely with the darker color palette. It framed a few small booths designed to seat about four comfortably, sitting underneath soft glowing pendant lights. In the front was a small bar with several stools where a few patrons had finished their visit.

Shortly a curved woman with her red, curly hair tied into a bun strolled up to them. In a warm, Irish tone she welcomed the group then showed them to three booths against the back wall. She left a holo menu on each table and went to retrieve their water.

Kekec offered to sit with Kivr and his father, allowing Jasper continued to visit with his Aunt and Vora.

Sliding into the booth seat, Vora took in the cafe with appreciation.”I’ve been in places like this before. Reminds me a little eatery not far from where I used to live on Tenra. Very basic food, but was something of a community hub,” the Tenraith remarked, seeming momentarily lost in thought.

Jasper’s eyes wandered for a moment, his feet stalled in place. With a gentle hand, his mother nudged and ushered him toward the booth. He shifted into the seat where he continued to take in the calm scenery. The subtle bounce in his leg showed his excitement building.

Meanwhile, Avik slipped into her own seat while she allowed Vora the outside. At hearing Vora’s comment about a small place in Tenra, she glanced at the woman and considered commenting, but dismissed it. Instead, she distracted herself by pulling up the 3D display for the menu. Quietly she turned it to the children’s menu before she pointed out a chicken strip meal for Jasper. Spotting his Aunt’s gesture, the boy’s eyes locked on the image. An eagerness spilled out across his expression as he nodding his head in agreement.

“It seems Jasper already knows what he wants. Chicken, I’m not surprised at all.” Cassandra mused as she also brushed through the menu for her order.

“Hey, nothing wrong with knowing what you want and holding to that,” Vora said as she eyed the menu. In fact, as others had been looking at it, Vora’s memory perfectly caught the images and she didn’t even need a turn glancing through it. “I’m going to have the penne arrabbiata with a side salad and garlic bread. Because everything is better with fresh bread,” she said matter-of-factly.

“It depends on how well the fresh bread is made.” Avik’s eyes slid to Cassandra who immediately looked away, a small flush of red across her cheeks.

“We don’t speak of that incident.” She left the statement on the air as she tended to Jasper.

“Uh oh, I sense a story,” Vora said with a grin. “It’s okay, I’m a pretty terrible cook. Just ask my son. Thank goodness for replicators!”

The woman promptly opened up a drawing section in the menu, allowing him to slid his finger over the surface. He wrote out a few advanced math equations for his years then quickly solved them, wiping the screen clean and starting with a new batch.

Avik then took her time to browse through the sections more designed for Human, Klingon, and other races palates rather than her own. She finally settled on creamy salmon pasta with spinach, rice, and an order of breadsticks.

Vora watched Jasper work and smiled. “That’s some pretty heavy math. Is it one of your favourite subjects?” she asked the boy.

When Jasper finished his last math problem, his eyes looked up and he nodded.

“Numbers are easy. I don’t like all my classmates, some are mean and…” He paused to look at Avik.

Without asking him what he meant, she answered promptly. “Closed-minded.”

“That,” His hands pressed onto his screen then slid it over to Avik who looked down at it. With a finger, she then wrote something down. A few small lines of numbers appeared. The largest being 26 and a comma between each set. Gaps indicated a longer pause as if creating sets with different patterns.

Cassandra frowned then looked at her sister-in-law. “Now what did you give him this time?”

“A number puzzle that spells out a message. It’s a simple cipher and he’ll figure it out.”

Vora grinned. “Sounds like an excellent test of skills that could be quite interesting,” she said. “I was a lot older before I started really doing heavy mathematics, but when I was a kid no matter what else was happening in my life I couldn’t get enough of learning. If there was a book to read, I’d manage a way to read it. But then again it helps that I have an eidetic memory. It’s the only way I managed to get into Starfleet Academy. I could catch up to my peers in very little time.”

“Jasper is fascinated with them. I even caught him trying to develop his own using numbers turned into images.” Avik’s voice held a hint of pride in her nephew’s interests.
“I want to be an officer like mom.” Jasper blurted out, eagerly diving into the mathematical problem.

Already he had determined the vowels within the words by picking out the recurring numbers. These were set to the side and lined up with the possibilities before he reinserted them for testing. It was obvious it wasn’t his first puzzle from his Aunt as he worked out a proper method to solve it.

“Make sure you fully explore your options, Jasper. You might end up finding something at the Vulcan Science Academy or even in other areas. Fixating on one parth isn’t optimal.”

Jasper shrugged off her wise advice, his attention still on the puzzle. His mother just shook her head.

“You say that all the time, but he never listens.” Cassandra was obviously amused by the fact.

“He is still young and idealistic. I want him to be confident with what he wants and carve his own path rather than follow ours.” Avik admitted, her attention briefly looked toward the direction the waitress had vanished in.
