Vora grinned. “Sounds like an excellent test of skills that could be quite interesting,” she said. “I was a lot older before I started really doing heavy mathematics, but when I was a kid no matter what else was happening in my life I couldn’t get enough of learning. If there was a book to read, I’d manage a way to read it. But then again it helps that I have an eidetic memory. It’s the only way I managed to get into Starfleet Academy. I could catch up to my peers in very little time.”

“Jasper is fascinated with them. I even caught him trying to develop his own using numbers turned into images.” Avik’s voice held a hint of pride in her nephew’s interests.
“I want to be an officer like mom.” Jasper blurted out, eagerly diving into the mathematical problem.

Already he had determined the vowels within the words by picking out the recurring numbers. These were set to the side and lined up with the possibilities before he reinserted them for testing. It was obvious it wasn’t his first puzzle from his Aunt as he worked out a proper method to solve it.

“Make sure you fully explore your options, Jasper. You might end up finding something at the Vulcan Science Academy or even in other areas. Fixating on one parth isn’t optimal.”

Jasper shrugged off her wise advice, his attention still on the puzzle. His mother just shook her head.

“You say that all the time, but he never listens.” Cassandra was obviously amused by the fact.

“He is still young and idealistic. I want him to be confident with what he wants and carve his own path rather than follow ours.” Avik admitted, her attention briefly looked toward the direction the waitress had vanished in.

Vora watched with quiet interest at the interactions, musing about her own reasons for joining. “He can always change his mind,” she said quietly. “And maybe the reasons for doing something changes but the path is still the right one.” She shrugged. “Life can hold a lot of surprises.”

“Possible, but change can also bring less positive experiences.” Avik pointed out as the subject began to trail into uncomfortable territory.

Vora was too good at reading people not to notice the subtle shift that made her less likely to continue that little detail out too far.

Before the conversation could continue, a soft thump came from the kitchens. A woman followed by another man began to trail out with their orders. She gave a bright smile as she checked her list, trying to determine who had ordered what. It didn’t take long until everyone had their main course set out in front of them.
Jasper and Avik pulled a pair of sleek eatery gloves from their pockets before eating.

Cassandra shook her head. “I still don’t understand why you wear gloves to eat. It’s just bread sticks.”

“Is it a sanitary thing?” Vora asked. She could understand it, if so, but for her at this point in her life, she was rather far from being a germaphobe. Picking up her fork, she pierced one of the penne that was coated in the rather spicy tomato sauce. It made her think of Carlo. She missed him and his gregarious laugh sometimes.
