… so then the group arrived in Engineering, as they faced no impediments at all on the way there.

“Status report, please,” the Captain ordered whoever the senior officer on duty in Engineering was. He was surprised that nobody had managed to turn on main power in the time that it took to climb down here from the Bridge.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Vora moved over to a console as others were working to check if there was anyway to pull the sensor data from Astrometrics to confirm what she had seen. She tapped the keys to see if anything was working down here.

A woman dressed in an engineer’s uniform peeked her head out from around a corner, her hands seemed busy out of view. “Ah Captain! Thanks for coming on down here and bringing a few extra hands with you.” A spark like sound interrupted her words as the engineer bounced back a couple of feet while waving one of her hands. “Ah that smarts!”

Putting a lightly singed finger in her mouth, she continued her erstwhile status report. “Main power is out across the ship. I know that’s probably obvious, but what isn’t obvious is that the fusion reactors and warp core are operating nominally. Something is preventing the power from travelling through the EPS conduits and actually powering things. I’ve been attempting to redirect power to anything that will work and I’ve discovered big power draws are a no-go. So shields, propulsion, the deflector dish, sensors… they’re not happening. Lower power requirement equipment I can get working for a very brief moment. Replicators, local forcefields, a one-way transport maybe, it really depends.”

“How is that even possible?” the Captain asked. He didn’t really expect an answer because it sounded like it shouldn’t be possible; if she knew the answer she’d probably be working on directly fixing it.

She noticed Zorell attempting to access the console. “We could get power to that for a couple of minutes, but that will depend on what you want to do with it.”

“Umm, okay… let’s get our priorities straight first. I didn’t hear ‘life support’ in your list of things that is currently powered, and that usually takes up lots of power all over the ship.”

“So… assuming we don’t have any other damage anywhere else… and there are no hull breaches… we might have a day’s worth of oxygen, just floating around inside the ship. We’ll probably fill the ship up with enough carbon dioxide to cause unconsciousness for everyone on the ship in half that time. Do we have any ability to power CO2 scrubbers or synthesize oxygen?”

Why gravity is still working? Johann wondered, but did not ask. How do we have gravity with no power supply?

– Johann Dvorak, CO

“That’s the interesting thing Captain.” The engineer interjected. “I can’t verify that life support is powered, but I can verify that the atmospheric composition is remaining within standard levels. I don’t know if that’s just localized backup power keeping it running or if there’s as yet unknown cause. The lighting…” She waved a hand around at the emergency lighting. “Is definitely on the backup batteries but I’m not sure about any other system. I’ve been focused on getting main power working again like it should. So we can assume that oxygen or carbon dioxide will be a problem right away, but I recommend keeping an eye on the readings.”

“I was hoping to get access to the last sensor data I collected from Astrometrics to make sense of what bare glimpse I caught. Something happened right before we lost power.” She turned to Johann. “Hypothetically, if the outage is isolated, then we might be able to use the sensor suite from a runabout or shuttle to gather scans and see if something is directly interfering with our systems somehow. It’d mean more climbing through the jefferies tubes, but I can probably make it fairly quickly. But I’d be out of communication and that’s not ideal under the circumstances.”

She moved closer to Zorell and looked at the console in thought. “I don’t think accessing the sensor logs from Astrometrics from remotely will be possible at the moment. If we could get a data cable from here to there directly and bypassed all of the power junctions in-between then maybe… but at that point you may as well bring a power pack with you to power that console locally and data transfer to a tricorder.”

She moved away from the console to pick up an equipment pouch and placed it by Zorell. “These might come in handy if you want to stay in communication.” Opening the pouch she pulled out some silver coin shaped items and showed it in the palm of her hand. “These are similar to comm buoys but short-range and line of sight. Basically leave a trail of breadcrumbs at every turn and you should be able to keep in contact. Whether a shuttle or runabout will have power and be able to sync up with these are another question though.”
