“I was hoping to get access to the last sensor data I collected from Astrometrics to make sense of what bare glimpse I caught. Something happened right before we lost power.” She turned to Johann. “Hypothetically, if the outage is isolated, then we might be able to use the sensor suite from a runabout or shuttle to gather scans and see if something is directly interfering with our systems somehow. It’d mean more climbing through the jefferies tubes, but I can probably make it fairly quickly. But I’d be out of communication and that’s not ideal under the circumstances.”

She moved closer to Zorell and looked at the console in thought. “I don’t think accessing the sensor logs from Astrometrics from remotely will be possible at the moment. If we could get a data cable from here to there directly and bypassed all of the power junctions in-between then maybe… but at that point you may as well bring a power pack with you to power that console locally and data transfer to a tricorder.”

Yeah, we’re not running cable up three decks, Johann thought. But why would we have to?

She moved away from the console to pick up an equipment pouch and placed it by Zorell. “These might come in handy if you want to stay in communication.” Opening the pouch she pulled out some silver coin shaped items and showed it in the palm of her hand. “These are similar to comm buoys but short-range and line of sight. Basically leave a trail of breadcrumbs at every turn and you should be able to keep in contact. Whether a shuttle or runabout will have power and be able to sync up with these are another question though.”

“Let’s think about this situation a bit more before we decide to split up,” the Captain said. “But, assuming for a second that we do want to prioritize getting this data, do we actually need to go all the way to astrometrics to get it? There’s a computer core one deck up.”

Vora pondered this over. She was no engineer, but she had basic system handling knowledge. “Isolating the specific information could take a bit, but we could rig an external system to allow us to do that. A power pack and a standard desktop console could work just fine. I just need to see the data clearly for more than a split second in order to properly make sense of it. Even if I could reproduce what I saw, I have no context for it, nor do I think it was enough to be as accurate as we probably need just now. So I need a bit more.”

“This is all supposing that the data made it from the Astrometrics data buffer to the computer core in the scant moment before power went out.” The engineer mused with her arms crossed and a finger tapping her bottom lip. “But like you said said Captain, the core is a lot closer. We have less to lose if it’s a bust.”

GM Dread

“If it is, we just go up another two decks and try again,” the Captain said, seemingly reversing his own opinion earlier. “If there’s nothing in the data buffer, then it doesn’t really matter. We can at least check the core for other information about the state of the ship as well.” The time they had was on the scale of hours, unless the damage was catastrophic and they just didn’t know it yet. But in that case they were all dead anyway.

“What else can we be doing down here?” he asked. “Do we have other options to figure out why power transfers suddenly aren’t working?” He assumed that all of the obvious causes were investigated already, but he wanted to be sure…

– Johann Dvorak, CO

The engineer nodded at Dvorak’s reasoning. “I’m not sure what else can be done here honestly, so changing locations to try and get more data sounds as reasonable as anything. I’ll leave someone behind in case power miraculously come back on and a switch needs to be flipped.” She began moving as she talked to collect some necessary gear.

GM Dread

“Alright, let’s go then,” he said. He collected the pouch of communications relays. “Do one of you guys have a power pack, somewhere?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

The engineer lifted a large-ish backpack and walked closer to the Captain before holding it out to him. “If you wouldn’t mind sir.”

GM Dread

Vora was ready to go, already equipped with her science kit.

“Sure,” the Captain said, and took the backpack. They set off to the computer core, leaving a trail of the small relays as they walked down the corridors and up the Jeffries tubes.

A few minutes later, they were at the Upper Computer Core. It took a second to pry the doors open, but a minute later they were standing among consoles that tied into large racks full of isolinear chips.

“Alright, so which one are we plugging this into?” he asked as he unslung the power pack. “We’d better be organized about this, since we’ll probably not get that much juice out of this thing.”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

“This one,” Vora said, flashing him a smile as she moved over to one bank and crouched. The beauty of her eidetic memory was that she had in fact memorized the systems. She would rely on the engineer to deal with the retrieval but she could help at least a little. All she wanted was confirmation that the thing that had flashed in her mind from the screen was something they could analyze.
