Now that they were going to be on the move, Cassidy refused more intently. At least in the open they had options, but they were going inside a building they knew nothing about and had little information about the customs of these people. There were plenty of places for things to go wrong, so she was prepared to act quickly if need be. But there was only one of her. She couldn’t be everywhere at once.

Abrams, COS

“Do you have any devices that can get a person into orbit?” Marsh looked over, at zero power, the ship would cool and the crew would suffocate in their carbon dioxide. But most pressing was the status of their orbit, it could be decaying and bring them done in hours… while the ship cooling might take a day before it became fatal…

Sienna felt the same ripple that Avik felt and just as unfortunately, she could not follow the thread. She could tell that Avik grew nervous about the unknown source of telepathy. The Counselor turned and walked beside Sllyro and continued in her conversational tone. “I do not see any communication device. Do your people have some sort of empathic or telepathic abilities? Extra sensory abilities are common in some species who have joined the Federation.”

Nox, CNS

Sllryo led the way down the paved path away from the monolithic tower. They first addressed Marsh’s question while the escorts formed an oval formation around Sllyro and the away team. “Our means of conveyance into space is upon a magnetically accelerated capsule. Our station in orbit will grapple the capsule with a magnetized tether and pull it into merging with itself. If any of us need to return from the station then they ride the capsule back down where it is then caught it a magnetized lattice of webbing.”

Orbital elevator, that was a neat trick, what it didn’t allow for was a to another ship transport. “And from there do you have any space craft. A shuttle, hell, I’ll take a space suit and a thruster pack.” He thought for a moment. “A seven gigawatt power source, some magnetic couplers, universal adapter… although that’s on the ship. A laser torch, powered lamp.” Marsh looked over.

“Its an ask, but if I can get to the ship - I certainly can reimburse any expense or material loss.”

Sllyro then turned to address Nox. “As the Great Cycle is our way of life, so to is it that which binds all of us together. We have no ‘factions’ because each of us understands every member of our race completely and irrefutably. Everyone works towards the good of the race. This makes it difficult to interact with those not of our kind, but when we discovered how to travel at speeds and distances before never thought possible, we knew we had to prepare for the eventuality to meet other life. The timing of that was much sooner than expected however. Our preparations were not completed.”

Avik walked like a cat on glass. Each step was careful and deliberate to avoid the tension slicing her while her mind tried to absorb all that happened. A small part of her held back the pressure to discover the issues on the Europa, but stress did little to resolve climbing issues. She took note of each officer’s reaction to the predicament.

Marsh’s determination was clear he wanted to get onboard and directly fix the Europa. However, in her opinion that effort was fruitless if they couldn’t ensure their safety and not add to the trouble. At this point, they were helpless which irritated everyone. Including her. Meanwhile, Nox was using the time to establish the cultural differences and satisfy their curiously. An effective distraction for their worry.

Slowly, Avik began to pull behind until she was beside their CoS. In a quiet voice, she asked the question on her mind.

“What do you think about this?” It was a vague one, but left the answer open for Cassidy to share whatever answer she wanted.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

The blond security chief was, well, puzzled. “A part of me thinks that a lot of this is something like a translation error. We’re speaking the same language but the nuance isn’t conveyed the same way. The details we seek, we have to be careful about, but if we’re less than honest, it’ll show and that will make a tenuous situation worse. As a scientist I want to clear up the discrepancies, but as a security officer, ma’am, my senses are trying to not be on overdrive. To the point that I’m worried we’ll overreact if and when the time calls for a response.” She allowed herself to look at Avik for a moment. “But mostly I’m worried for the Europa and the rest of the crew.”

Avik listened to the CoS’ reply. Her feet moved in an automatic patterned, adjusting only when needed and mindful of the situation going around her. One didn’t become an XO without learning to multitask. Thankfully, she had learned at a young age how to manage and accomplish it with little effort. Her expression remained somber during her digestion of the answer to her question.

Balancing acts were always difficult when your ship was in danger. It added pressure and made a demand for action, even when none was possible. In their helplessness, they had to trust that the Europa’s crew and captain were managing the danger to their qualification. She took a moment to consider what she could add to the conversation.

“Balance is difficult for everyone. Especially when our emotions attempt to get the better of us, it’s a continual war and finding that ‘edge’ is important. You’re not alone in worrying about the Europa. However, I’m more cautious than bold. There is something here because I sensed some sort of mental sensation earlier then lost it. Like it is hiding from us.” Avik paused for a breath then added in a quieter voice.

“I am starting to wonder if what is happening to the Europa is sourced here and not on the ship or space around it. Mostly I fear without information, our rushing back to the Europa might create bigger issues than resolve the existing ones.” It was only a theory at this point. However, the budding evidence had started to strengthen it.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

There was a feeling of unease at the mention of preparations that were not ready yet. Perhaps it was the fact that her ship was currently disabled in some way and people she cared about in danger. Or perhaps it was the natural wariness of meeting a new species who’s culture was completely unknown to them, either way, she couldn’t shake the worry that gathered between her shoulder blades and rested heavily on her mind. “Preparations? What kind of preparations are they?” Her voice was carefully congenial, interested even though she noticed that Sllyro had not answered her question about telepathy or ESP among his people.

Focusing on the group in front of them, Abrams walked with Avik, keeping herself engaged with what was happening around them.

Sllyro stopped short of the entryway to a three story building but one that was quite large in overall area. Seen off to the side of it was something similar in appearance to a rocket gantry. A craft similar in size to the one the Europa had rescued was suspended in the middle of the gantry, but no supports were keeping it aloft. The only thing connected to the craft was an access corridor or umbilical to load in passengers.

“Our preparations were meant to prepare us for the inevitable contact we knew were coming. Our faster than light craft is still in the proof of concept stage and not yet fully reliable, as I’m sure you noticed. We wanted the technology to mature so that’d we’d not be on a weaker footing with whoever visited. This is under the assumption that any technologically superior visitor would have the inclination to leverage that superiority to take advantage of us. Of course they may be surprised by our other technological advancements and that to their detriment.” Sllyro said before waving open the doors to the building and lead the way inside.

Marsh pointed at the craft… “That will work,” He made a pulling gesture. “Bring it down here.” He was going to fly that stupid thing. to the Europa by hook or by crook.

Marsh

Sllyro paused long enough to look back at Marsh and shook their head. “No.”

GM Dread

Marsh knew that his request would be be negated. He wondered why. It was almost as if they were ignoring him or coming up with reasons why he could do what he wanted to do.

He glanced at the XO in desperation. They were just screwing with them now. As far as he was concerned their lack of interest to help him was making them an accessory to whatever was happening to the Europa.

“I can understand an overabundance of caution. Star Fleet isn’t here to leverage any sort of technological superiority over you and your people. Our focus is exploration, collaboration and mutual scientific advancement. We are here to represent friendship and support which are paramount to the Federation’s Mission.”

She looked at the craft and wondered if their possible extra senses helped them hover the craft in some way. His no made her uneasy, but she shook herself from it. Marsh was being frustratingly pushy. Sienna understood why but they were in a precarious position here on the ground as much as the Europa was above them. She was here to help so she continued. “Is it that you have pilots ready to go? Or perhaps safety concerns? Lt. Marsh is quite eager to get on board the Europa to assist in fixing whatever has happened to our ship but we would never presume to commandeer your vessel. His concern for our crew is causing him to be a bit rude. Can we help get things prepared for a trip up to the Europa Sllyro?”

Nox, CNS

Marsh

When Avik felt Marsh’s glance, her attention pulled from Cassidy and acknowledged his presence. His tension and worry flooded against her mental causing a reflexive tension to ripple across her mind. Being helpless was difficult for everyone, but it seemed to take its tow on Marsh the most. She suspected was likely due to his nature of being more hands on than others.

She inhaled softly then spoke after Nox finished.

“What Nox said is true. On a bolder and logical stand point, aiding us in saving our remaining crew will certain be taken in consideration.” She hoped by appealing their desire to make a good impression that it might encouraged greater cooperation. It was a theory at least.

“Time wasted puts the Europa’s remaining crew at greater risk. If you have other options to help our crew, now would be a good time to mention them.” Avik’s tone was calm and reasonable. She wanted to avoid drastic measures, but she had to insist on haste. Time was not on their side and unless something changed in the ship’s condition, she was prepared to pull more drastic measures.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

“We can’t do anything from down here, Commander. Its not like I can build a rocket in the time the Europa has left.” He had a phaser, a communicator, a tricorder and his clothes. “I could put a over ‘air’ computer link together, but if the ship is completely absent of power, its like calling a phone that’s no longer connected to the power source. What stuns me is that there is no battery power… that almost has to be a weapon.”

OOC: Not forgotten this, but waiting for the GM response. It might affect Avik’s suggestion and reply.

Bump for GM

Sllyro looked at the impatient away team members. Sllyro’s thoughts were hidden behind an impassive visage. “First, we’re not against the idea of sending some of you into space to attempt to assist your ship, however we will not be coerced or demanded into giving you our resources.” There may have been a pointed look at Marsh but who could really tell. “Second, we are unfamiliar with your technology so even if we had the means to assist we don’t know what other ‘options’ would actually be effective. However, telling me any sort of technobabble would be pointless since I am not versed in such things. In our command center, the building we have just entered, is the scientist who has developed our power infrastructure and technology. They would be a much better resource to converse with.”

The procession continued through the building until they entered a large room that was easily three times the size of the Europa’s bridge. The room was packed with various workstations who had an assortment of the native species working them. At the front of the room was a wall that was like a giant viewscreen. The screen was sectioned into three parts, the largest part was in the middle and had a detailed view of the Europa lifeless in space, the two side views were telemetry of the space station and various spectrographic readings around it. Unlike the majority of the species having similar color themes of blue and green, in front of the extra large screen was a person who was colored predominantly yellow with streaks of orange.

Sllyro moved to a deferential position by this person and did an introduction. “Guests from space this is our chief scientist Sllyrasa. Honored Sllyrasa these are the crew from the Europa.”
