“It’s another one of those things I only do when I’m not in space,” he answered. “Which now-a-days is never.” In that respect, it was just like him and camping.

Vora grinned at him.

“We should swim someday on some nice planet. Maybe go snorkeling or scuba diving somewhere interesting, where there’s stuff to see underwater. But that requires… constricting… equipment, you know. You don’t need… well, anything, to just swim for fun.”

“I like the idea of that.” Her maroon eyes lit up “Hey, maybe we can go swimming while we’re on Tenra. I’ll check out what the conditions are like and whether it’s feasible. And I guess we see about making plans? I know you have people to talk to, but what should I tell my possible, but likely father?”

“We’ll probably have at least a week of refit time at Black Rock before we go on the next assignment. Probably a little bit more because we’re going to rotate some crew also. Some people are leaving, others are coming. I think Tenra is about two weeks away from there, so you can probably set a safe expectation of us ending up there next month, regardless of whether we’re assigned or we take leave time.”

They hadn’t had a big sector-wide emergency in a while, so… it was probably safe, right?

Vora found herself nodding and then her head slowed until her maroon eyes went a bit wide. “We’re going to Tenra,” she said softly. “Well, I should sent a message back first and start that conversation, but… wow. I had left last time certain I would never return in my life,” she said, leaning back in her chair. They were talking about going back to Tenra to meet her father. All of it was suddenly starting to land heavily in her mind.

“Yeah that’s kind of a giant change of direction,” Johann said somewhat casually. He never expected he would go to that planet unless she did, and she had not planned to at any time. Other people might have planned for her to, but that was different. The last person who had that expectation died. By getting stabbed. With his own knife.

“Are you going to need the day to sort this out?” he asked. It was just before her shift, and it was a lot of news to take in.

– Johann Dvorak, CO

Vora blew out a breath. “Yeah, I think I will. I’ll also talk to Jerrin about it. It’ll be up to him if he wants to go down and I want him to have the option. And I guess first thing to do is call… my father. Assuming he is.” She drew in a deep breath. “Yeah, I’m going to need the day off. I’ll let Marsh know and have take over my shift in astrometrics. We don’t have anything pressing going on right now though so it shouldn’t be an issue.”

He nodded in acknowledgement. She could handle all of that just fine. He didn’t have the luxury of taking entire days off most of the time, but he also didn’t really need to for this.

She gave him a smile before breaking into a chuckle. “Well, this is going to be an interesting day. I should go get dressed and go sort this out.” Vora leaned over kissed him on the cheek. “I really am looking forward to getting married, Johann. Let’s not put it off too long, okay?” She understood the need to pause and sort this out first but she was making plans and she wanted to not have to stop them suddenly. “And to that effect, Cass was wanting to know if we had a firm date, or at least a.. ballpark, as she called it? Something about wanting to finally take some of her own R&R that she and Steven have accumulated.”

~Vora Zorell, Sciences

“Yeah, we should probably come up with a ballpark, right? That’s a pretty reasonable expectation for people who have been engaged this long.” It was a self-deprecating comment; he let the timing stay undefined longer than he wanted to, and he felt a little embarrassed by it.

“If next month is the Tenra Field Trip and/or Disaster… we could either do it right after or have a bit of a breather in between. I mean, it really depends too on how much notice we need to give whoever is going to attend. Which I assume includes Deacon, who has to travel halfway across the galaxy.” He didn’t have anyone who was going to travel to see it; his parents were as-content-as-they-could-be that the vast interstellar distances involved made their direct participation in the event impractical.
