“That… would be fantastic, actually. I’ll get started on those as soon as I’m able.” He thought of Dvorak’s other comment, about the psychology of it all. Like anyone on a Starfleet vessel, Stephen had considered sitting in that chair before, but the considerations had never felt quite serious to him - he’d never really put much thought into them. Though he knew the time would come soon where he’d have no choice but to think about those considerations, he made the decision to block it from his mind for the moment.

“I like your methods, sir, and look forward to learning whatever I can from you.” His eyes darted behind him, in the direction of the door. “Where would you like me now? If you have nothing else I can get started on those sims.” He hoped he wasn’t being too forward, but treating the Captain as a semi-peer still felt oh-so-foreign and he wasn’t quite sure of how to handle it just yet.

“Do all the standard check in stuff, first, if you haven’t already,” Johann said simply. “Just to get it out of the way. Then you can try those simulations out. Feel free to also introduce yourself to all of the department heads. It’s good for you to chat with all of them for a bit before they ask you for anything, or vice versa.”

He seemed to ponder slightly what else to suggest. “Why don’t you join me on the Bridge for the first shift tomorrow morning? I usually take the second one, but we’ll do the first one together and then see how things go.”

“Sounds like a plan, sir. As far as I know I’m all checked in, but I’ll get to meeting all the heads tomorrow after first shift.” He stood with a small groan, still sore from sitting in the shuttle for so long. “I look forward to tomorrow morning, then. Have a good night, Captain.” With that, Stephen turned and confidently strode out the door, not permitting himself a moment’s hesitation lest he second-guess himself.

Good exit, Johann thought, ignoring the rigidity of pseudo-military courtesy that wasn’t strictly followed. He didn’t exactly care much for it, and was more impressed that Stephen was able to carry himself with some pretense of confidence.

We’ll make something out of him. He pushed a few buttons on his computer console and re-arranged the duty roster for tomorrow morning.
