Hello Everyone,Russell Watt is joining Europa today as our new Gamemaster. For those of you who do not know him, “the Tribble” has been in the club a very long time, and has a particular attachment to our fleet. As a matter of fact, he was actually the Fleet Commander who recommended me for the Europa CO vacancy 11 years ago. He’s cooked up a horror-themed sim for us to play that I’m looking forward to.

Greetings all and thank you Joe,
I am pleased to be able to ply my GMing trade with you on the Europa. As Joe says, the mission is horror themed. That means things going bump in the night, strange voices, not going alone down darkened corridors AND NEVER EVER answering the door when you hear a knock (especially if the lights are flickering). There is also the very likely chance that there’ll be blood involved. If any of it gets too much for anyone, please let me, Joe or Gavin know (via email/contact forms, discord or on the board) and I’ll make it less terrifying. While the upcoming mission IS horror themed, the purpose is to ensure everyone is enjoying it.
About me … as Joe said I’ve been in the club for a long time, back when we had 7 fleets, 3 academy ships and we were on EffWebb. I was in the Academy and went from Cadet to DH to CNS to Captain on the Columbia, XO on the Olympic, CO on the Draco, then Lt Governor and Governor of Oed V, and working in various departments/fleets in leadership roles. I’ve also GMed in the Fleets previously, before having to take steps back from involvement. But, I keep on coming back to STF. Actually, I had decided to retire from GMing altogether. But I got the itch to try GMing again, and Joe and I have been in discussion since late December. Think of this like a ‘one off’ (well two off, if you consider the Genesis) ‘retirement GM tour’ … if singers can do it (and yes, I’m thinking of John Farnham’s retirement tours that tend to happen each year), why not STF GMs?
So, In addition to the point I raised above regarding the sim becoming too much for you … a few extra points
1) If you have any suggestions/ideas/queries or if you are lost, please ask myself, Joe or Gavin
2) If you have any specific ways you’d like to develop your character, please let me know, I have looked at characters, read bios (and in one case, read the species history document linked by Lindsay) and have things that should engage you throughout the mission
3) There are a couple of places where I will need direct input from some of you. I will either contact you through your Contact Form or via Discord when we get to that part so that you can do the reveal and your character’s reaction to it - I’ll anounce it in mission posts when this is happening
4) I usually put little hints of what is coming up in the monthly reports, so you may
5) As a GM, I do not lie. I may be cryptic at times, I may skirt or obscure the truth, but I will not straight out lie. Also, I follow the thoughts of “Chekhov’s Gun” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gun - so if there’s something I introduce, it will be used/play a part in the sim/mission.
6) There will still be challenges for you to solve, and hopefully a few jump scares and a few extra visits to the Counsellor may be required by the end of the sim.
So, I hope you all keep your psyches together, as you are faced with the question, “Dead or Alive”.
