She looked around and smiled, having noticed similarities to her home re-creation holodeck program. “I spent many an hour pouring over what I wanted in my kitchen at home. My husband was quite annoyed after weeks of indecision. In the end though, I really felt vindicated. I made great choices and we really loved spending time in our kitchen together. I am glad you are enjoying the fruits of those labors too.”

Mathys paused the conversation as he checked the gumbo again, topping it off with a few additions. As the smell filtered out into the room, his stomach growled.

“Sharing is often seen as caring from where I come from. Can’t tell you how many times we helped or shared something with our neighbors and the affair turned into a party. Also, I think the gumbo is done. Can you help me by getting some bowls and spoons?” He gestured to the drawers near the counselor. Meanwhile, he shut off the heat and moved the pot off the burners.

She stood up and moved over to the drawers, pulling them open until she could retrieve two bowls and two soup spoons. She used her hip to bump the drawer closed and came to the stove with them. Sienna held out the bowl he would be using. “Here.”

She took a moment to close her eyes and take in a deep breath of the aroma from the pot. Smiling she let out a sigh of enjoyment. “It smells divine.”

Using the ladle, Mathys poured a hefty helping into the bowls. He smiled at her compliment knowing it would taste just as good. He had made this recipe so many times that it was nearly impossible for him to get it wrong.

“Wait until you taste it,” Once she began to feast, he joined in. A chef always waited for his guest to bit first. The reaction was always the sweetest because he enjoyed the delight it brought. Compassion was never a lacking trait in his household after all.

She took a healthy bite and savored it with her eyes closed for several long moments. The flavors were not simple, but a cascade, complex and varied. She smiled as she chewed, nodding in appreciation. “Just as divine as I had hoped.” She said after she swallowed her first bit. There was a bit of bliss in her voice, and enjoyment. The warmth went all the way to her belly.

“So, what is one dish you remember fondly and why? This one,” he pointed to his bowl, “happens to be mine.”

She thought about it for a bit. “I would have to say the dessert at the end of my parent’s 25th anniversary. It was a small round cake shaped like a hockey puck. When you cut into it, a somewhat molten core of sweet caramel came out of the middle, oozing out over the plate. It melted the architectural white chocolate slivers into an amazing river of warmth that you could dip the cake into to eat. I think I ate three that night and could have gladly eaten more if my mother had not given me such a disapproving look.” She laughed softly and took another bite.

Mathys took a moment to consider the dish’s name.

“Sounds like a type of molten lava cake. Maybe I can find the recipe and we can replicate it here. It sounds like a fun challenge to add to my growing skills. Though, mama said my baking skills needed work.”

Once Nox finished with her first bowl, he held out his hand.

“Want another bowl? I’m about to get myself seconds.”
