An ensign manning the tactical station perked up and announced to whoever was in command of the current watch, “Incoming transmission.”

It was Avik’s shift on the bridge. For the most part, it had been relatively uneventful and calm. Something the XO appreciated from the crazier events that she had been a part of. At times, she wondered if the Europa had become a magnet for the bizarre and strange. It certainly seemed like it.

The ensign’s words interrupted her thoughts causing Avik to turn her head. She then addressed the young officer.

“Bring them up on the screen.” A simple answer as she waited to see the owner.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

An older but still spry looking man was displayed on the screen. He had a little gray around the edges of his hair but the rest was still predominantly blond. His piercing green eyes seemed to nail down everyone within sight.

“Europa this is Commodore Mccallum from Starbase 83. I’m calling because I need you to redirect immediately towards the coordinates that have been provided. Subspace scanners have detected warp signatures near a recently discovered pre-warp society. Starfleet wants you to investigate and see if anyone has breached the Prime Directive or if they have developed warp tech on their own. In the case of the latter you are directed to initiate First Contact protocols and see if you can gently ease them into the into the universe. This should be straight forward. Contact me when you discover what case this ends up being. McCallum out.”

GM Dread

When Commodore Mccallum blinked off-screen, Avik turned to the crew. She inhaled then gave her orders.

“Set a course for the coordinates sent and at a warp five.” As the officers snapped to their orders, she turned to her chair.

When she sat down, she typed out and sent a message to the CO. Ensuring he wouldn’t be ignorant of the situation when he took over for her.

XO to CO:
Orders from- Commodore Mccallum from Starbase 83.
Request- Investigate cause of warp signatures over pre-warp society. Report back on the cause and follow the appropriate protocol.

When she finished up, the XO sent the message to the CO and continued to remain on the bridge. If he arrived for more details, she would give them to him.

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

The computer terminal that Avik used emitted a happy “chirp” to indicate that the CO had acknowledged her report. They’d probably discuss it later that day.

The ship proceeded at warp 5 for some time without incident. It was going to be several days until they reached their destination but thus far everything was going smoothly. Was this likely to continue? Who really knows.

It was into the third day that an ensign at the science station looked quizzically at it. They weren’t sure what they were seeing but the sensors were picking some kind of scattered background noise, but the computer was picking up on a pattern. It wasn’t naturally occurring, though what the signal was or where it was coming from was yet unknown.

“Sir, I’m picking up some sort of signal but having a hard time figuring out from what.” They reported to the command officer.

GM Dread

This time, the Captain was on the Bridge for this shift. He swiveled in his chair to face the ensign at the science station. “What kind of signal?”

– Johann Dvorak, CO

The science ensign shook their head. “I can’t tell sir. The computer seems to be recognizing a pattern to it though and suggests it is likely not naturally occurring. I’m going to need some help narrowing down it’s transmission point as well as figuring out a way to make sense of it.”

GM Dread

When the Captain entered the bridge for his shift, Avik took the second in command place and observed. It wasn’t until the mention of needing help in narrowing down the transmission point, did she break her silence.

“Avik to Lt. Marsh. You are needed on the bridge.”

=^=Yup…=^= Came a raspy voice… it was a combination of a dry and raw throat. =^=I mean yup… I mean Yes Sir.=^=

She turned to the CO, “Marsh is one of the best options for helping them narrow down the transmission.”

–XO, Avik, Lt. Cmdr

Marsh was on the bridge in under a minute which suggested he was both awake and in uniform. His five o’clock shadow and tired eyes suggested he wasn’t asleep… at least not yet.

He tapped the ensign at the science station… “You are relieved…” He made magic fingers, “cause I’m the ‘wise and powerful OZ.’” His eyes scanned the data… First plan was eliminated what they knew. He started the search with all of the naturally occurring space based warp speed races. There weren’t a lot of them so that would take no time. He paused. Next were warp capable races… then mathematical progressions....

“I’m doing a data search of space biologicals first. Captain can we make a ninety degree course change and go to warp 8? It should give distance… we already have a bearing.” They would be able to triangulate the target in short order again… unless the distances was excessive… but he could tell from the signal strength it couldn’t be too far… relatively.

Marsh

“Helm, turn 90 degrees to starboard. Increase speed to Warp 8.” The Captain ordered.

He stood up, and walked over to Marsh, standing over his shoulder at the science station.

“Do you… uh… need a few extra hours or something?” The question was asked quietly, and with a hint of some concern.

— Johann Dvorak, CO

Marsh chuckled for a moment tiredly. “No Captain, I needed a few hours less.” That wasn’t exactly an answer, but couple Marsh’s known enjoyment of partying and the fact that he was off duty and not expected back on for 10 more hours, it probably meant he was entertaining himself and likely other members of the crew.

“I’m five by five, Sir. I can handle this.”

Marsh CSO

Mattie arrived on the bridge as they went to warp. She relieved the Ensign at the engineering station with directions to go to main engineering and make sure that the coupling that had been replaced was holding true. She set up several scans for the ship to make sure that they were functioning at optimum so that if they ran into trouble they could either fight or flee.
