The older man snorted and laughed. “Jump right in, the water’s fine…” Once he’d enjoyed the joke, Franklin’s drawl went on, not an ounce of offense in his expression. “They didn’t tell you in first year that half your classmates weren’t going on to Command School? Enlisted and Officer Candidates start out at the same place, us low-lifes are in a lot of your early classes. We just stay at the Academy for a shorter time and go into specific disciplines a lot earlier.” The Engineer took a bite and carried on. “We get a year of training at the Academy, then move into specialist training, depending on what that specialization is, that could be anywhere from Earth to Vulcan and back. I did my specialist courses at Utopia Planetia before they moved the Corps of Engineers to McKinley Station.” Here, he grinned at Zorell.

“As for what we think of Cadets, it’s similar to what we think of Officers… Only we like Cadets more.” He winked at the younger man.

“Hey, you like some of us officers,” Vora said with a grin before she sipped her drink which had cooled to a lukewarm.

Some of ya’ll know how to be officers…” Franklin quipped, with a crooked grin.

“I really never thought about that. In my eyes, everyone was an equal at the academy. I didn’t consider for a moment that anyone there was enlisted.” He shrugged and continued. “Doesn’t really matter now, what your training is, as long as you can get the job done.” He took a sip from a glass of tea next to his tray. His face soured with dissatisfaction as the taste hit him. “These replicators never produce enough sugar, I’ll tell ya. Where I’m from, we take such pride in our sweet tea that nearly all of the replicators in my hometown are custom-fitted with precise crystal generation matrices, worked on by yours truly, of course. Where are you two from?”

“Tenra,” Vora said. “Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it. My world isn’t a member of the Federation and probably won’t be unless something crazy happens,” she said casually. “I’m currently the only Tenraith in Starfleet.” It was the basic truth even if the reality was a lot more complicated. But she could have these conversations with people with far more ease than she had when she had been new like Griess.

“Don’t matter much who’s enlisted and who’s got spurs. We’re all Starfleet out here. As for home, that’s Earth, Oklahoma to be exact.” The man replied between bites. “With a sweet tooth like that, I’d bet money you’re from somewhere south as well?” He used the break in the conversation to take a sip of coffee.

“You bet. Best tea on the Florida-Georgia line. Have you ever been there? The Xindi Incident memorial is quite a sight. Hard to imagine that much destruction went across half a state.” Greiss’s face was visibly unsettled by the implications of what could have happened those centuries ago.

While Vora had attended the Academy, her exposure to Earth as a whole planet was limited. She had explored much of California, especially since her specialization in geology had taken her out in the field, but she hadn’t ventured a great deal farther than that. Especially back then, San Francisco had been busy and overwhelming enough for the Tenraith that she spent much of her time just adjusting to the multitudes of cultures around her.

“I’ve seen it. Hell of a scar they left…” He was quiet for a moment, but then looked at Zorell. “I’ve always meant to ask… What is your homeworld like?”
