That prompted a chuckle. “It can only benefit the ship, I think. And to be honest, it’s not as strange or as uncommon as you might think. Lots of people switch tracks. But the more common one in Starfleet is to be doing a certain specialty and for some reason find yourself drawn to Command, like my mother who started out in science and is now a first officer.”

Slipping her arms off the desk, Cass leaned back in her chair. “But I’ll reciprocate a little here too. Something people don’t necessarily know about me is that I scored equally high in aptitude for security as science at the Academy, and I was inclined to do security but an intense fear of deep water kept me from going that route. I didn’t feel that such a strong phobia would make me a viable candidate and actually made me a liability, something that made no sense for a security officer for whom the ship relied on to keep them safe.”

Abrams, COS

Clodagh nodded in understanding. “My phobia is similar, but it’s space I fear. I know, I know, what am I doing in space, then? It’s not being in space, it’s being lost in free fall. With mag boots and a tether, I can do the scariest of space walks. But take away one or the other,” she actually shuddered and fear flashed in her eyes a moment. “I feel drifting beyond rescue. Floating out there till my oxygen runs out.” She quicky smiled again, but it took a moment to shake the thought. “But it doesn’t affect me in ships, shuttles, transports or anything. I promise. And I keep curtains on my windows so the feeling of weightlessness and floating aren’t matched with the darkness as I drift off.” While it was true the curtains helped, they only helped when she remembered to draw them at bedtime. And she wouldn’t admit that she’d forget more times Thus bnb she’d have cared to.

“I can understand that,” Abrams said. “Everyone has something that makes them uneasy. Some more than others. That you know your limits and how you can mitigate them speaks very highly of you.” She wasn’t going to hide her admiration for members of her team, even if she was keeping things as professional as possible. It was important to her that people knew she wasn’t blind to their strengths and weaknesses.

Rising from her desk, the COS moved in front of the screen she had been looking over when Donnely arrived. Tapping a couple things, she pondered and then looked back at Clodagh. “I’ve got you in a mixed rotation until you get settled and get to know the team. I do a biweekly schedule with a monthly rotation so that people can generally know what to expect. I want you doing a little bit of everything for the first while and then I’ll re-evaluate and see where you can do your best work. Sound fair?”

Abrams, COS

Clodagh watched, noting the pattern in the schedule despite not being able to see names. “Sounds like a good idea. Different teachers in different areas. Sound idea.” She grinned at the Chief and nodded.

“Anything in particular you ate needing in way of coverage or a hole in a team that you need filling? Or just learn it all the best I can, as fast as I can?”
