The patients were in their respective surgical areas and the med staff moved quick to allow them the senior doctors to help. Captain Massey’s condition hadn’t changed. Her head wound had not only resulted in a skull fracture but a serious traumatic brain injury. She still had not regained consciousness and was showing no signs of active brain activity beyond minimal autonomic functions. The radiation has also impacted her body’s ability to conduct repairs. But there hadn’t been anyway to conduct any cerebral repairs on the surface of that almost uninhabitable world so perhaps there was still a chance for her.

Lieutenant Abrams, a medic, had suffered some internal bleeding during the escape from the ship when trying to get patients to safety, as well as a dose of radiation poisoning when the Tian An Amen‘s Sickbay had several explosions. Add to that prolonged radiation exposure on the planet and his body was not able to deal with the injuries well, even after the bleeding in his liver and spleen was at least partially dealt with despite not being able to conduct surgery. But the more detailed scans available to them on the Europa showed that he had a small hepatic tear that had been very slowly leaking blood and impairing the function of his left kidney. The radiation poisoning had also begun to damage his DNA.

An alarm sounded as Abrams’ blood pressure tanked further.

Avik looked at the diagnosis. A concern surfaced into her dark eyes, but she said nothing and pulled on her sterilized gloves. The XO inhaled then exhaled as she began. During her time being a medical officer, she experienced both tragic loss and unexplained miracles. She dreaded the one she would find with Captain Massey.

Time tickled down in the Vulcan’s mental clock. Her head and hands worked in unison as she tried to save the patient’s life. She started off with medications to support the repair system damaged by the radiation and stop the cells from absorbing more. She moved onto the fracture, removing the pieces to assess the damage underneath. The impact had left many nerves severed or crushed near the brain stem. After seeing the amount of damage, the XO knew the odds were grim. The woman required a specialist. Regardless of reality, Avik continued to work in an attempt to beat the odds.

When the surgery finished, the Vulcan woman began to assist in the cleanup. Her eyes flickered to the monitor displaying Captain Massey’s condition. A small sigh escaped through her nostrils. The patient had been put on a life support system, but her brain didn’t respond to any stimulation. By medical definition, Captain Massey was brain-dead. She hoped the CMO faired far better than she had.

The Andorian doctor was concentrating hard, his hands moving in precise maneuvers as he worked to repair the tear in the Lieutenant’s kidney. Stopping the internal bleeding had been his primary goal. The Damage to the man’s DNA was going to take time and treatment, and possibly would need treatment for the rest of his life, considering the amount of radiation he’d been subjected to… Using a tissue regenerator, Tolar closed the tear and reinforced it with a pattern of overlapping scar tissue that should keep it from reopening, but not inhibit the function of the organ going forward. Once that was done, he moved to reasses the liver and spleen injuries, cleaning up and reinforcing that work so the damage could heal on it’s own. Once that was done, Tolar turned to an aide.

“Give me a 10cc mixture of 70% Hyronalin, 30% Lectrazine, let’s see if we can halt the radiation damage in his cells…”

-Zarath, CMO

They gathered the medications and handed them over to Zarath with practiced efficiency. Given the extent of the prolonged injuries, this surgery was taking longer than the other.
