There was no other way to do this but what felt right in this moment. Reaching out, she rested her hand on Julien. “Take a deep breath and look at me.” Her gaze held no admonishment, no judgement, no desire and no regret. There was simply understanding and warmth.

He did exactly that, bracing himself against the impact of her golden eyes.

“Everything will be okay. I’m scared and nervous about having another child under these circumstances, but I have to trust that others will see me through this all. And that we will find our way the best way we can. I want us to really be friends. I know that will take time, but you have to give us that time.”

“I want that too and I will do. Please go back to Earth for the birth. They will be able to help you best, you’ll get the best Starfleet Doctors there are, better than anywhere else, briefed with all the details of A’naad’s birth and my parents will be there and… my brother even… and they will be with you and take great care of you. We have a large house, you can stay with them in your own suite while you are there, before the hospital and you’ll love them, they are the kindest parents one can have. And.. . how do you like the name Flavia?” he asked, his voice breaking a little on the word and his left eye was shiny.

  • JUlien King

La’kia’s face lit up with delight. “I like it! It’s a beautiful name. And don’t worry about my care. I’ll happily stay with your family and Sage has contacts and is doing the hunt for the perfect doctor to tend to my needs. We’ll be okay, you’ll see.”

He felt immensly relieved that she was taking him up on the offer. He knew his parents… and even Damien as much as he was able to… would do everything for La’kia and Flavia. Flavia… he would have a baby daughter by the name of Flavia and he would not be able to birth her or hold her.... he had to stop the train of thought immediatelly. He just nodded with a forced smile.

She moved her hand to create a tiny bit of space before she exhaled. “Look, I know this is all complicated, but the truth is I will always love you, and I know you’ll always love me. It’s just how it is. We just weren’t meant to spend our lives together and while the reality of that has been hard, it’s okay. And in case you need to hear it, I don’t have anything against Marishka. Is it weird seeing you with someone else? A little bit. But I’m Zaharan, Julien. We go where our hearts and needs take us. I don’t regret a second of our time together and I hope you don’t either.”

And there was the chest pain again. Whoever thought that your heart could break only once was vastly mistaken. And amazingly, the pain was not getting less the more often it happened!

He stood up, still keeping up his smile but his left eye was shiny again. “I would never regret any of it and.. I feel the same way. I’m sorry…” he inhaled. “I’m sorry I can’t be more… Zaharan about it. Maybe some time in the future this will change. But right now it would go against who I am, what defines me.”

  • Julien King

“I don’t know what that is supposed to mean under these circumstances,” La’kia said with a frown. “I’m not asking you to be more Zaharan. I’m trying to explain that I don’t begrudge you moving on, and I hope you won’t do the same for me if it should happen.” She really wasn’t comprehending his sudden change in demeanour. Just when they seemed to find some common ground and understanding, it seemed to be fading. Had she said something wrong? She thought he’d be happy about her acceptance of Marishka, but maybe she was missing something?
