Today was a split shift and she had been on duty since 0600 hours, so his suggestion for a lunchtime meeting suited her just fine. In uniform, minus her lab coat which she had left at her computer terminal in Sickbay, Valleea strolled through the corridors, arriving at the counsellor’s office shortly after 1200 hours. She pressed the chime and steadied her nerves. Nothing bad had happened but when she stepped back and looked at it all, she could feel the anxiety start to build.

Ensign Vallea, Doctor

Riley had always found sharing meals to be a bonding experience, and hoped the relaxed setting would lessen the anxiety that came as a matter of course with Valleea’s condition. He’d laid out a small spread on the coffee table that stood between his couch and two wing-backed chairs. A medium-sized bowl contained a spinach salad tossed with cucumbers, tomatoes and red onion. Two smaller bowls sat to the side. One had crumbled bacon, the other hard-boiled eggs. He couldn’t recall if Valleea was a vegetarian and thought it best to keep the animal product to the side. A small pitcher of creamy dill dressing and glasses of iced tea completed the fair.

At the sound of the chime Riley went to the door and pressed the latch release.

“Hello, Counsellor,” she said softly, her body relaxing slightly at the sight of the man she had come to not only rely on to be a good of reality for her, but also trust deeply.

“Hello, Valleea,” he greeted her, pivoting his body so as it was perpendicular to the door frame. “Please come in. How have you been?”

The Kriosian stepped in and seemed to nod slowly at his question as she took in the office. “Okay, mostly. I haven’t had any really massive shifts in mood, which is a weird feeling in of itself. But I guess the stuff that is happening is making my anxious,” she said, not exactly hesitantly, but more thoughtfully as if she wanted to be sure of the veracity of what came out of her mouth.

Riley nodded and moved deeper into his office. He gestured for her to take a seat.

With her own nod, Valleea took a seat on the couch and gazed at the meal he had taken the time to put together for them. She was actually quite heartened by the effort.

“I figured, with the time, lunch would be a good idea. Help yourself, please,” he said as he began to put food onto his own plate. “It’s a good thing that you’re mood has stabilized. That’s progress. It makes sense as the loss of the old Genesis retreats into the past and the demands of the present take our attention. Do you want to start with identifying what’s causing your anxiety?”

Valleea took her time as she created a salad in her bowl, opting for some of the eggs but avoided the reddish things she was less certain about. “Well, it’s a bit of story about how I came to the decision and person to do so, but…” She stopped filling her bowl and looked up at Ryley, feeling her body flood with tension. “I hired someone to look for Daharren.” It was such a simple thing to do, but she could feel her heart pounding in her chest. The decision should have brought relief at a path forward but it was opening up far more questions than she had had before.
