It made sense. Valleea used work as an escape. In the extreme that could be harmful, but what she described here wasn’t extreme.

“The party was large. All the people talking over each other, social groups changing fluidly, it’s not surprising it was overwhelming. Are there others aboard besides Thor with whom you’ve connected socially?”

Valleea fidgeted with her fingers slightly before reaching for another bite of her food. The act of eating at least allowed her to conceal the slight flush on her cheeks. It was a weird reaction and she didn’t fully understand why it was happening, especially since nothing between her and Niniane had been anything but simply friendly.

Swallowing, she shrugged. “I’ve made friends with one of the scientists. Ninane Fahr? She’s been around since the whole drama of the previous Genesis and she’s been very kind to me. But I think she’s being transferred or something, so.... yeah.”

It happened. Starship crews were constantly changing, especially among the lower ranks of officers who often found routes to promotion through transfers.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I do know her and she will be missed. A good friend of mine is leaving the Genesis as well. We can’t replace them, and things will seem emptier, but we have to move forward. Tell me, how did you and Ens. Fahr meet?”

Events had become a bit of a jumble, but this point she knew well enough. “She was there during the evacuation of the Genesis,” Vallea said softly. “I hit my head at one point and went unconscious. She carried me out and off the ship. When I woke up at base, and began to freak out after finding out the ship went down, that’s when you were called in. But she would check in on me after to see how I was coping. Later, I treated her for a minor issue and we shared a meal afterwards, got to know each other better. We’ve been spending a bit of time together lately and I was helping her work out some medically related personal things. She’s a lovely person.” It wasn’t until she began to list their encounters like this that Valleea realized how entrenched Ninane had become in her life. She had kept her distance from people for reasons just like this. She felt slightly devastated but wasn’t even sure how to explain it.

Riley had been probing to see if he could find a part of her meeting Fahr that could translate into her meeting others, but from what he was seeing, the one commonality was others reaching out to Valleea. Both Fahr and Thor fit this pattern.

“What’s promising to me about what you’ve told me today is that you’ve shown yourself open to others, more than once. When Fahr reached out to you, you didn’t push her away. The same can be said with Lt. Thor. It’s this openness you need to maintain moving forward. I can sense the loss you feel with Fahr’s transfer. I’d encourage you to stay in touch. She isn’t permanently absenting herself.”
